Effects of Authentic Leadership on Work Engagement and Employee Turnover Intention in Malaysia Call Centres

    No full text
One of the biggest challenges for the call centre industry is the high turnover rate. Past studies revealed that affective commitment, organisational commitment, psychological capital, job satisfaction, work environment and problematic customer behaviours were some of the contributing factors of turnover. However, authentic leadership and the role of work engagement as mediators lacked investigation for the service industry in Malaysia. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influence of four dimensions in authentic leadership on employees\u27 turnover intention in Malaysia call centres with work engagement as the mediating role. A total of 389 online surveys were distributed to employees working in call centres in Klang Valley and Cyberjaya. This study obtained 240 valid samples with a return rate of 60%. The results indicated that self-awareness and balanced processing of information had a significant relationship with work engagement. Work engagement was significantly related to turnover intention. Work engagement contributed as a mediator to some variables towards employees\u27 turnover intention. Hence, leaders are encouraged to manage tasks and relational roles. Different leadership styles have their strengths and limitations which could impact the employees\u27 engagement to the company

Particulate matter (PM) was identified as the main air pollutants in Malaysia which directly impose a treat to human health and understanding this pollutant is also crucial for its mitigation and control. This study aims to determine and characterize the PM2.5 with the influence of meteorological parameters. The PM2.5 samples were collected at Perai, Nibong Tebal and highway of Penang Bridge represented the industrial, residential, and roadside areas of Mainland Penang, respectively. The descriptive statistical analysis was conducted to understand the variations of PM2.5 concentration on the study areas, while its relationship with meteorological parameters were tested using Pearson correlation. Eleven heavy metals and three anions were determined using mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Ion Chromatography, respectively. Results showed that the mean concentration of PM2.5 are 10.88 ?g/m³, 31.96 ?g/m³, and 39.35 g/m³ for residential area, industrial area, and roadside, respectively. The results revealed that mean concentrations of PM2.5 (39.35 ?g/m³) in the roadside are significantly higher than NAAQG 24-h average of 35 ?g/m³. Result also suggested that meteorological parameters were lest significant in controlling the PM2.5 concentrations as only the air pressure was found to be significant with the value of correlation coefficient of 0.476. The major components such as SO42-, K and Na account for about 70-90% of the PM2.5

    No full text
Alum natural mineral salt is the world\u27s leading crystal deodorant which works in removing unpleasant body smell. Some other products attempt to block the sweat pores with harmful chemicals such as aluminum chlorohydrates or aluminum zirconium. However, crystal is hypoallergenic deodorant that is healthy, safe, and effective in inhibiting odor formation on the axillary. The light scent infused with natural essential oils might enhance the properties of the crystal deodorant and its antimicrobial activity in fighting against body odor bacteria. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential antimicrobial activity of both citrus essential oils and alum salt. The essential oils were extracted from Citrus aurantifolia, and Citrus sinensis peels by water-steam distillation and analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Antibacterial assay against Escherichia coli was carried out on the extracted essential oils using paper disc diffusion assay. Results showed that no lead and cadmium constituents were detected, while low concentration of iron (0.993 ± 0.0059 ppm) and copper (0.134 ± 0.0078 ppm) were detected in the crystal salt (15% w/v). D-limonene, decanal and citral were major components responsible for the citrus scents aroma. The C. aurantifolia essential oil and 15% w/v alum salt were active against E. coli with inhibitory zones at 7.23 ± 0.15 mm and 11.13 ± 0.51 mm respectively. The citrus scented crystal deodorant was successfully developed and tested

Tilapia is one of the fastest growing aquaculture productions in the world and understanding of its storage to ensure the quality of the fish before the product reaches consumer is important. Freezing changes a food physical state by changing water into ice when energy is removed in the form of cooling below freezing temperature and its effect on the quality of fish is widely studied. This present study evaluated the effect of frozen storage of tilapia fillet at -18°C over 120 days. The study revealed that all the chemical quality indices studied like pH (6.60±0.02 to 6.98±0.05), TVB-N (11.81±0.03 N/100g to 22.98±0.18 N/100g), TBA (0.03±0.02 mg malondialdehyde/Kg to 0.18±0.06 mg malondialdehyde/Kg) and PV (0.02±0.00 mEq/kg to 0.80±0.07 mEq/kg) increased in value over the 120 days of storage period. Meanwhile the sensory attribute of the fillet decreased for all parameters evaluated, but were still considered acceptable at the end of the storage period

Lightning in Northeast Bangladesh: Relation with climatic variables, consequences and adaptation

    No full text
In Bangladesh, the lightning during a thunderstorm has recently been officially declared as natural disaster, resulting in numerous fatalities each year, especially in the country\u27s northeast. This study aims to look into the relationships between lightning and climatic variables, the spatial distribution of deaths, people\u27s perceptions of the disaster\u27s consequences and adaptation measures, and the influencing factors that make people victims in Sunamganj District. Several statistical approaches, such as descriptive statistics, correlation, and the Mann-Kendall Test, were used to meet the study objectives by examining time series data of climatic variables, lightning events, and household survey data. The data imply that lightning strikes have a positive and statistically significant relationship with climatic variables such as temperature, rainfall, humidity, and air pressure. Moreover, that lightning strikes may become more common in the future as climatic variables increase. The perceived consequences of lightning strikes include disruption of human life, injury, damage and or burning of environmental and infrastructural elements, etc. Going outside during a thunderstorm and/or remaining outside during a thunderstorm are the primary factors contributing to a tragic accident. Those who were engaged in income-generating activities during the monsoon, like agricultural operations such as Boro Rice farming and fishing, were the most vulnerable to this hazard. Therefore, several adaptation strategies, including house safety and facilitating emergency shelter; assisting victim families for recovery and rehabilitation; travelling in covered vehicles during a thunderstorm; and disseminating knowledge about proper lightning safety measures, outside movement during a thunderstorm, and first aid information for initial treatment through awareness building campaign should be implemented to reduce the number of casualties

ABSTRACT The writing technique in a literary work is a reflection of the legacy of a writer\u27s thoughts and personality. Expressions through themes, questions and language expressions produced by the author place themselves in a certain category. Poetry between genres is considered difficult to understand from the aspect of language styling used. Minimal but full of philosophical struggles requires the reader to interpret from various angles of perception. Malaysian poets such as Usman Awang, A. Samad Ismail, and Baha Zain are among the poets who have their own identity in conveying their creative language. Similarly, the Indonesian nation such as Sapardi Djoko Damono, Chairil Anwar, and Afrizal Malna also have their own credibility in poetry writing techniques. Therefore, this study was conducted to unravel the question of the process of writing poems from the aspect of language style techniques presented by poets. The selection of two nusantara literary figures, namely Usman Awang and Afrizal Malna who are also the recipients of the earliest and most recent S.E.A Write Award in the scope of the study is to show the identity of the language style used by them during the creative process. These two figures are so famous for the flow of humanitarian struggles that make poetry writing a platform to awaken the humanitarian attitude. Even so, they have their own way of delivering work. The method of this study was conducted qualitatively by analyzing the text documents. Stylistic theory is used as a basis to unravel every technique of language style, elements of ambiguity, fusion mixing and symbolism to prove the philosophy of the artist\u27s delivery style. The results of this comparative study found that the two poets have their own uniqueness in fulfilling their responsibilities as humanitarian fighters. The implicit rhythm, satire and symbolism employed by Malaysian and Indonesian poets are a reflection of the philosophical value of their intellectualism in their work, while giving awareness to the community on the superiority of literature in fighting for oppressed human rights

Mediasi Aktif Dalam Pengasuhan Digital Ke Atas Perkembangan Kanak-kanak: Active Mediation in Digital Parenting on Children Development

    No full text
ABSTRACT This paper discusses the importance of active mediation of digital parenting on children development. Active mediation is communication of conversation or conversation between two parties which is parents and children respond to the information presented. Parents communicate because they want to dominate children understanding, the attitude, behaviour and actions whether they devise or not on an issue. In addition, there is no denying that active mediation is one of the most important forms of parental practice because it can influence the behavior, attitudes, and thoughts of a child using digital devices. Without realizing it, active mediation is a complement to the digital upbringing of parents who raise their children using digital devices, where the development of digital technology including the rapid use of digital devices nowadays has impact on parenting methods. Furthermore, the development of children as early as six month of age such as cognitive, social and physical is related to the effectiveness of active mediation practices on digital parenting provided by parents. Previous studies have discussed active mediation in term of behavior, attitudes but the focus of discussion only revolves around primary school and adolescent and there are few studies on children as young as six months to five years old. Therefore, active mediation in digital parenting gives more emphasis because it is very important for parents in ensuring that children as young as six months old to understand the importance of communication to discipline them while using digital devices
