Motivation and Barriers for Business Start-Up among Graduates: A Gender Difference

    No full text
The gender issue in entrepreneurship has been researched from different views and dimensions. Some of the studies have focused on distinguishing between male and female entrepreneurs in terms of their personal skills and socio-demographic characteristics and others have attempted to determine individual intention and behavior toward entrepreneurship. The study analyzes gender difference on the perception of motivational factors and barriers for business start- up among graduates. The study is conducted in Kano metropolitan using a cross sectional/survey design. The population of the study composes of graduates who are either unemployed or employed for not more than three years and have obtained a Bachelor degree or Higher National Diploma qualification as the basis for selection. Discriminant analysis (DA) is used to investigate gender difference on the basis of perception about the selected variables on business start-up. Discriminant analysis is useful in creating an equation that will minimize the possibility of misclassifying cases in their respective groups or categories. The result shows highly significant discriminant function (p < .000) and indicates that the proportion of the total variability not explained is about 37.7%. The Box?s M is 14.012 with F = 4.638, which is highly significant at p < 0.003. There is evidence to reject the null hypothesis, which states that the groups do not differ on their perception about motivation and barriers for business start-up. It is recommended for future studies to explore the moderating effect of religiosity and culture on business start-up

The Role of Market Complexity, Skills and Perceived Usefulness on the Marketing Support Services

    No full text
This study aims to examine the relationships between managing market complexity, skills, and frequency of usage of marketing support services. The research was conducted through a structural equation modeling using data from 67 SMEs that operate in Malaysia. To analyze and interpret the result, a measurement model and a structural model were utilized for the main constructs ? managing market complexity, skills, perceived usefulness, and the usage of marketing support services. This study found that owners, who are facing difficulties in managing their businesses, which are focused on market complexity, are more frequent users of the marketing support services. In terms of skills, SMEs with longer experience are lesser users of the marketing support services. The results from the moderator analysis failed to validate that perceived usefulness affects the relationship between managing market complexity and the frequency of usage as well as skills. The results of this study can prove to SMEs that frequent use of marketing support services can help in dealing with market complexity. The role of perceived usefulness should not be sidelined by service providers as it may have a negative impact in the long run. The findings will be of interest to researchers, policy makers, and service providers

Economic Growth in Malaysia: A Causality Study on Macroeconomics Factors

    No full text
The volatile state of economic growth has long been the theme of studies among researchers. Past findings associate a number of factors behind the fluctuation in economic growth in varying degrees. In this study, four macroeconomic variables, namely oil prices, foreign direct investment (FDI), exports, and inflation are particularly selected to test their relationship and impact on the economic growth of Malaysia, as measured using Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By utilizing time series data from 1976 to 2016, a series of empirical analysis including the Augmented-Dickey Fuller (ADF) and Phillip Peron (1988) unit root assessment, Johansen and Juselius test of cointegration and Granger causality analysis are employed to assess the direction of impact and long-run relationships between the variables. Our findings reveal there is a long-run impact among them. While oil prices, foreign direct investment, and export are significant to influence economic growth, there is no indication of causality between inflation on any of the variables

    No full text
Metadiscourse is used by a writer to organise his text and textually interact with the potential readers. An effective use of metadiscourse reflects the writer’s writing ability because it is one of the aspects in composing process of making a successful text. However, ESL writers especially undergraduates tend to face problems in using metadiscourse markers in their writing. Many of them do not use the metadiscourse markers appropriately in their essay writing. This preliminary study investigates the use of metadiscourse markers in good persuasive essays written by undergraduates from a public university in Malaysia. The corpus examined in the study was built from 195 persuasive essays written by the second year students at the university. The objective of this preliminary paper is to present the metadiscourse markers found in a corpus of good undergraduate writers’ essays. The markers are classified in the main categories (organisational and interpersonal discourse markers) and sub-categories based on Tan et al.’s (2012) simplified metadiscourse framework for ESL lay writers. Using a computer-mediated concordance software, this study aims to reveal the frequency of the metadiscourse markers use in a total of 195 good persuasive essays produced by Malaysian undergraduate writers. The findings presented in this paper are anticipated to be beneficial for other researchers who are interested in finding an example of metadiscourse markers usage in good persuasive essays
