Enhancing Local Labour Productivity in Oil Palm Agriculture

    No full text
The palm oil industry in Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak, faces labour shortages due to restrictions imposed by the government. As a result, local workers are required to perform tasks that were previously carried out by foreign labourers. This study aims to identify the productivity of local labour among Smallholders (PKS) in Serian, Sarawak. A total of 56 respondents were selected as samples using purposive sampling methods. The selected respondents are PKS who employ local labour for their plantations. The study found that the local labour used comprises family members, relatives, and villagers. No local labour from outside the area was employed. The types of tasks performed include tapping trees, fertilizing, pruning, harvesting fruit, collecting fruit, loading fruit into trucks, and driving trucks. In terms of Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) production, the number of FFB produced per ton per month is mostly between 1 to 2 tons per 1 to 2 acres of oil palm plantation, which equals 12 tons per acre per year. This yield is relatively high compared to the national average for smallholders, which is 8 tons per acre per year. The implication of this study is that effective strategies should be developed involving the MPOB (Malaysian Palm Oil Board) and PKS to encourage more local people to work in the industry, so that the palm oil sector does not continue to rely on foreign labour

    No full text
One Saturday morning in 2005, Syed Zainal sat at his desk contemplating the career decision he would have to make over the weekend. At 38, Syed Zainal was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at HICOM Holdings Berhad, a Malaysian automotive manufacturing company, for ten years. Perodua just offered Syed Zainal a promotion to CEO, a position that would make him responsible for the entire division. Normally, Syed Zainal would have been blissful by such an opportunity, but he worried about its impact on his already fatigued personal life. Since his last promotion, he has struggled to balance an increasingly demanding workload with his responsibilities at home. Syed Zainal explained: “I have worked my whole career, and until now, I have never had any issues balancing work and home. However, things started spinning a bit out of control after my last promotion. At first, I thought I could handle the longer hours and more frequent travel, but it became a real drag on the family after a while. Then, two kids need my attention. That is when I realized it was time to change the situation. Syed Zainal has mixed feelings about accepting the promotion.” Over the past several years, Syed Zainal has taken steps to get his schedule under control. He and his wife Jan agreed that things were better. Nevertheless, another promotion would invert their lives all over again. As CEO, he could expect to be busier than before. It actually worried him. Syed Zainal found it hard to decide about accepting the promotion. He knew that the CEO of Perodua expected him to accept; in fact, he had emphasized that he had no second choice

    No full text
In this research, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) were introduced as hybrid nanofillers at a total loading level of 5wt.% in poly(lactic) acid (PLA) as matrix material. PLA-CNC/GNP biocomposites were successfully fabricated with the utilisation of compression moulding to study the effect of CNC and GNP on the mechanical and thermal properties of the biocomposites. The produced PLA-CNC/GNP biocomposite materials, including pure PLA for comparison purposes, were characterised by mechanical and thermal properties. Overall, the results of the flexural properties showed that the PLA biocomposite had a formulation of 2.5 wt.% CNC and 2.5 wt.% GNP contributed significantly to the enhancement of flexural strength and the modulus, up to 47% and 76%, respectively. The thermal properties also seem to be optimally improved as the thermal stability of the biocomposite samples was analysed accordingly. Overall, the incorporation of CNC and GNP with 5 wt.% of total hybrid filler loading showed a favourable impact on the mechanical and thermal properties of PLA biocomposite for environmentally friendly automotive components

Advances in Biohydrogen Production: Techniques, Challenges, and Future Prospects

    No full text
Progressing to sustainable and renewable energy sources is essential for addressing climate change and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Biohydrogen production, which is the production of hydrogen via biological processes, can be one solution since it provides high-value energy and environmental benefits. This review aims to provide summary information about the three basic strategies involved in biohydrogen production: dark fermentation, photo fermentation, and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). Dark fermentation is the fermentative conversion of organic matter via anaerobic microbes into hydrogen and other products. While this approach is simple and could work with diverse waste substrates, scalability is limited due to low hydrogen yields and the need for substrate pretreatment. Photosynthetic bacteria employ light to transform organic substrates into hydrogen. Photosynthetic bacteria use light to convert organic substrates into hydrogen, indicating that this process could complement dark fermentation. However, its dependence on light and low efficiency present significant challenges. Microbial electrosynthesis (MEC) converts hydrogen into energy by reducing it from carbon dioxide and using electroactive bacterium combined with an external voltage to produce gas from organic matter that is well-aligned but complex with wastewater treatment while also facing costs that make them highly operational. These technologies are likely to see improvements in genetic engineering, new designs for reactors, and the use of them with other industrial processes to improve productivity and profitability. Ongoing research and development are essential to realize large-scale, practical methods for biohydrogen production. This review covers the potential of biosynthetic and anaerobic approaches in this field

A Conceptual Framework of E-Takaful Participation Readiness (ETPR) among Individuals at Insurable Age in Malaysia

    No full text
Malaysians need more savings and a critical financial backup to protect themselves from adversity. Hence, a call for a digital platform is vital to further reach out in the current economic situation. The phenomenal growth of B2C e-commerce, particularly after the pandemic, has impacted almost every industry, including banking and financial services. This research suggests an integrated model of E-Takaful Participation Readiness (ETPR). However, academic research on digital takaful is still in its early stages. Most academics focus on technology and ignore the takaful institutions adopting it. Past studies have explored the topic of e-banking readiness, but limited studies have focused on its relation to the takaful area. This study is a pioneer in examining consumer participation readiness for e-takaful services, particularly during the digital shift process due to the pandemic. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for e-takaful adoption. Takaful institutions can use the proposed framework as a starting point for implementing e-takaful, and scholars can use it to expand, refine, and evaluate takaful technology (Takatech) research. The findings of this study can be shared with takaful industry stakeholders and regulatory bodies to help them develop innovative marketing strategies and customer-centric takaful products

Level of perception on fertigation technology among Indigenous people in Perak, Malaysia

    No full text
Fertigation technology has proven to be a successful method for enhancing crop yields by applying nutrients. It is cost-effective, easy to install, and simple to operate, which is why many farmers in Malaysia have adopted it. However, indigenous people have hesitated to use it due to negative perceptions. This study aims to determine the level of perception of indigenous people in Perak towards fertigation technology. The study uses a quantitative approach based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), with attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control as independent variables and perception towards fertigation technology as the dependent variable. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 150 respondents, and descriptive analysis was employed for data analysis. The findings demonstrate that the mean score for indigenous people\u27s perception of fertigation technology was moderate (M = 2.7667, SD = 0.87774) including their attitude (M = 2.5875, SD = .94309). While subjective norm (M = 2.3343, SD = 0.90242), and perceived behavioural control (M =2.3933, SD = .86919) have a low mean score. These empirical findings provide valuable insights for policy-makers to help indigenous people adapt to modern technology and boost their economic growth, especially into actionable strategies that facilitate the adaptation of indigenous people to modern agricultural practices while respecting their cultural identity and promoting sustainable development
