    No full text

Youth Attention to Problematic Gaming With Effective Fear Levels

    No full text
The persuasive power of fear is a commonly employed marketing strategy, especially in public service announcements (PSAs). The persuasive power of fear is often utilized to capture audience attention. However, the appropriateness of fear levels without eliciting negative reactions remains uncertain due to a lack of specific research. This is due to conflicting views among communication, marketing, psychology, and neuroscience scholars regarding fear levels that enhance attention but have fewer side effects. This study aims to determine effective fear levels for capturing youth attention in the context of problematic gaming (PG). Focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted in two sessions with 9 active youth gamers who have been playing video games for more than 2 hours daily for the past two years, utilizing the severity variable of the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM) threat. FGD data were analyzed using Atlas.Ti version 8.0 software to identify patterns and themes related to the elicited fear levels and their effects on players. The study findings indicate that moderate fear levels are effective in capturing the attention of young video game players and can reduce the risk of rejection or boomerang effects, whereas excessive fear threats are at risk of such effects. This study suggests the use of appropriate fear levels in PSAs targeting youth attention. Indirectly, the study offers valuable insights to help reconcile conflicting views among scholars. Determining the appropriateness of fear levels enables more effective and low-risk design of future PSAs

ABSTRACT     Unauthorized marriages refer to marriages that are considered invalid under the Islamic Family Law Enactment in Malaysia. According to reports issued by the relevant authorities, the number of unauthorized marriage cases has been on the rise year after year, particularly in Kelantan. A total of 1,600 cases were recorded in 2021, which increased to 2,095 cases in 2022. This increase has raised concerns among religious authorities regarding the validity of these marriages, the protection of the rights of the spouses and children, as well as the long-term impact on family institutions. The objective of this study is to identify the factors and implications of unauthorized marriages in Kelantan, while also analyzing the statistics of such cases at the Syariah Prosecutor\u27s Office in Kelantan. This study adopts a qualitative approach using case analysis methodology. Data collection was carried out through literature review, official documents, and interviews. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic analysis approach. The findings of the study reveal that while unauthorized marriages are deemed valid under Islamic law, they violate legal provisions. The factors contributing to unauthorized marriages include obstacles in the marriage registration procedure, documentation issues, and a lack of literacy regarding marriage registration. The study concludes that unauthorized marriages have negative implications for the wife, children, family, guardianship, inheritance, and both religious and legal institutions. The increasing number of unauthorized marriage cases between 2019 and 2023 warrants serious attention, particularly from religious authorities and family institutions, to raise public awareness about the importance of complying with Islamic legal provisions and ensuring stricter and more consistent enforcement of the law.   ABSTRAK     Perkahwinan tanpa kebenaran merupakan satu bentuk perkahwinan yang tidak sah menurut Enakmen Undang-undang Keluarga Islam di Malaysia. No full text
Rivers in Jeli, Kelantan serve vital ecological, recreational, and socio-economic roles, yet their water quality faces growing threats from expanding tourism and associated land-use changes. This study aimed to assess the physicochemical and microbial quality of water in four major tourism rivers, Lata Janggut, Lata Keding, Lata Kashmir, and Lata Renyuk, by applying the Malaysian Department of Environment’s Water Quality Index (WQI) and quantifying Escherichia coli as an indicator of faecal contamination. In-situ and ex-situ analyses measured parameters including dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH?-N), total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. Results indicated that all sites exhibited WQI values within Class I and Class II, corresponding to excellent and good water quality suitable for recreation. However, E. coli enumeration revealed sporadic contamination events, suggesting intermittent faecal pollution likely linked to human and animal activities near the rivers. The findings underscore a potential disconnect between physicochemical water quality and microbial safety, highlighting the need for integrated monitoring approaches. This study provides new insights into the status and challenges of river water quality at rural tourism destinations in Malaysia, informing recommendations for targeted pollution control, enhanced public awareness, and sustainable river management to protect both public health and ecological integrity

Urban green spaces are vital refuges for biodiversity within expanding cityscapes, yet butterfly diversity in Malaysian urban forests remains poorly documented. This study provides the first comprehensive checklist and diversity assessment of butterflies (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera) from Hutan Bandar Jeli, Kelantan. Field sampling was conducted over 15 consecutive days using fruit-baited traps and aerial nets allowing for the detection of both fruit-feeding and active flying species. A total of 244 individuals representing 38 species across 11 subfamilies were recorded. The most abundant species were Mycalesis mineus (n = 41), Jamides celeno (n = 32), Tanaecia iapis (n = 27), and Mycalesis janardana (n = 27), highlighting their adaptability to urban forest environments and potential role as indicators of habitat quality in disturbed landscapes. Conversely, 16 species were recorded as singletons, reflecting the presence of rare or less commonly encountered taxa. Diversity indices indicate a moderately high species richness and evenness (Shannon-Wiener Index (H′) = 2.82; Margalef’s Richness Index (Dₘg) = 6.72; Pielou’s Evenness Index (J′) = 0.77). Rarefaction and extrapolation analyses (iNEXT) revealed that sampling captured over 93% of the expected species richness, suggesting effective sampling effort with potential for additional species to be detected through extended or seasonal surveys. This study demonstrates that even small urban forest parks can sustain a remarkably diverse butterfly assemblage, highlighting their ecological and conservation value as biodiversity reservoirs within human-dominated landscapes. The findings further emphasise the importance of incorporating biodiversity considerations into urban planning and habitat management to safeguard such green spaces for the benefit of both wildlife and people

    No full text
This study employed the Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) technique in the Felda Tersang 02 area of Raub, Pahang, to address the region\u27s water supply issues. The study area is primarily composed of sandstone, slate, and dacite. Groundwater, critical for sustaining agricultural and industrial demands, is rapidly depleting due to unsustainable extraction. However, since the underlying geology and hydrogeology are complex, investigating and assessing groundwater sources can be challenging. By measuring the electrical resistivity of underlying materials, a geophysical technique called Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) is used to map and evaluate groundwater sources. Each survey line is 200 m long with 41 takeouts spaced 5 m apart, using the Schlumberger and pole-dipole configurations. The study\u27s findings will aid with groundwater resource management and provide a deeper understanding of the region\u27s subsurface geology and hydrogeology. The 2D pseudosection results for all three survey lines reveal a significant accumulation of groundwater in a large geographical area. The identified low-resistivity range (0–100 Ωm) serves as a significant indicator of water-bearing formations, providing valuable insights into the area’s groundwater potential

This study presents a geophysical investigation of subsurface structures within the metaigneous terrains of selected area located in Jeli, Kelantan using integrated Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) and Induced Polarization (IP) methods. The study area is located within Universiti Malaysia Kelantan Jeli Campus, Jeli District, Kelantan, and lies within the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia. Geological mapping at this area revealed the presence of metaigneous rocks, offering critical insights into the lithological distribution and structural deformation history of the region. Geophysical surveys along selected profiles delineated variations in resistivity and chargeability, identifying key features such as fractured zones, weathered layers, and compact bedrock. High resistivity and moderate-to-high chargeability values correspond to intact metaigneous rock bodies, while lower values indicate weathered or altered zones. The integration of ERI and IP data with surface geological observations provides a comprehensive model of the subsurface, offering insights valuable for Rare Earth Element (REE) mineral exploration

    No full text
Entrepreneurship often begins with a seed of inspiration that slowly blossoms into a meaningful venture, and for Mohd Azmier Hafiz Bin Lamri, or Ku Azmier, that seed was planted during his time as a student at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK). While many of his peers pursued the conventional pathways laid out by their courses, Ku Azmier chose to venture into uncharted territory by establishing a business in the beauty and wellness industry, an area seemingly unrelated to his academic pursuit in Tourism under the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism, and Wellness. Yet, it was precisely this bold decision that set him apart, proving that passion, creativity, and determination can transcend the boundaries of academic disciplines. Armed with the guiding principle embodied in his personal slogan, “Create opportunities, don’t wait for opportunities,” he transformed his student journey into an entrepreneurial platform that not only supported him financially but also allowed him to build a brand identity rooted in both family inspiration and individual ambition. His story is one of innovation, perseverance, and balance, reminding us that entrepreneurship is not limited by where you begin, but rather by how far you are willing to go
