Abstract: This article disscusses how some anthropologists, both foreign and domestics, configured a stereotype of indigenous Mexican women. The purpose is to observe that configuration on the basis of some ethnographic studies and images circunscribed to them, made between 1890 and 1921. The backbone of the argument, then, revolves around the conceptions that anthropologists have acquired with respect to the indigenous people, who signified their object of study

The Paper has the purpose to examine the process faced by the African-americans from the end of the Civil War to one of the most significant moments in their struggle for integration to the American society. This way, the paper analyzes the achievements of the Constitutional amendments approved during Reconstruction and the South´s reaction to them. During the decades following their defeat in the civil war, the southern states established a growing number of laws intending racial segregation. Facing this situation, Afro-americans were forced to look for options. Some decided to migrate to other regions, others created organisms able to demand the protection of members of their community from the legal framework. The success they achieved in the Little Rock crisis, in which segregation was officially repealed is a consequence of this process.

Abstract: This examination of Mexican costumbrista writing focusses on three distinc examples from Inclan, Delgado, and altamirano. In many respects, costumbrismo was a literary mode in Spanish America stimulated by the post-Imperial crisis. Prieto provides a characteristic ilustration. It encompassed a range of disciplines, including art (Velasco and Arrieta, for instance). In the aftermath of the triumph of the Liberal Reform in Mexico in 1867, it acquired a more self-consciously nationalist character. Even so, costumbrismo had always been concerned with collective identity, as seen through its popular imagery, emphasizing American daily experience. European influences were not absent, particularly from Spanish costumbristas anf French Romantics. The Mexican novel developed slowly during the nineteenth century, reaching a climax with the work of Delgado, who combined realims with the costumbrista attention to landscape and ordinary people

    Get PDF
The political process beginning in 1808 in the Spanish Empire brought about substantial changes in political culture. The Constitution of Cádiz introduced general elections with profound implications on power relations at every level, the national, regional and local, that is. While these changes have been studied mostly for the formerly Spanish social sphere, less scholarship focuses on the impact elections had on the indigenous villages. Therefore, the present article analyses the electoral processes in the heavily indigenous province of Oaxaca from 1814 onwards. It intends to show that the hypothesis of a growing local autonomy for the indigenous population vis-á-vis the State has to be rectified.
