Abstract: Vigilantism appeared in the last decades of the nineteenth century in some Western territories of the United States in process of colonization. These movements were consequence of the way such territories were organized, as well as of the absence and/or ineffectiveness of a formal legislation or authorities enforcing the law. Thus, the purpose of vigilantism was to protect the life and property of the settlers, who actually took the law in their own hands with some degree of violence. This paper examines the characteristics of the vigilante movements in order to trace their impact in the process of territorial organization undergone by Western areas of the United States.

Abstract: This study analyzes how the first women physicians in Mexico formed associations. The period studied begins in 1887 —the year in which the first female Mexican doctor received her title— and concludes in 1937 —when it was not mandatory to present a thesis in order to graduate, but performing Social Service was obligatory—. Our universe of study consists of 27 women doctors, including the pioneering woman in Mexico and the first female physicians in San Luis Potosí and Puebla. Earlier research focused on how early female medical students in Mexico formed organizations, and the nature of those groups. This approach is very versatile as, among other things, it allows us to reach conclusions as to the moment that Mexican medicine was living when those women were active. Despite the support of government and university authorities for their studies, their later incorporation into the medical guild and the wider society was neither automatic nor easy, so for their own self-protection they created and joined academic and social organizations.

Abstract: The journals El Maestro Rural and Revista de Educación were published during the periods known as Maximato and Cardenismo. The main objective of this work is to provide elements of comparison between the educational policies and the official discourse which precedes the model of “socialist education” driven in the government of Lázaro Cárdenas. As the reader will find, both periods had more affinities than differences with regard to topics such as adult and indigenous education, and of course, education as a means of unification of thought and formation of the Mexican nation.
