    No full text
Daphnia, a genus of freshwater crustaceans, are strong ecological interactors in aquatic food webs, bridging phyto- and bacterioplankton and higher trophic levels. Species within the Daphnia longispina species complex exhibit diverse life-history strategies, allowing them to adapt to varying ecological conditions. This study aimed to explore life-history traits in response to different dietary treatments in three species of the genus Daphnia (water fleas): Daphnia cucullata, Daphnia galeata, and Daphnia longispina, which belong to the D. longispina species complex. Measuring their life-history traits provides valuable information about how environmental factors shape their growth, reproduction. For each species, multiple clones were used, including one D. cucullata × D. galeata hybrid. Each clone was subjected to two different food treatments (pure green algae treatment and a 50:50 mixture of green algae and bacteria) for up to 3 weeks and age and body size at first reproduction as well as cumulative number of offspring across three clutches were measured under standardized experimental conditions. Results revealed interactions between food treatments and clonal identity. Algal diets generally promoted faster growth and higher cumulative fecundity, while mixed diets supported moderate growth and reproduction, highlighting the role of food quality in resource allocation. Life-history responses varied among clones, with the hybrid clone displaying a unique profile. The observed interactions between food treatment and clonal identity emphasize the evolutionary importance of dietary adaptation, with potential consequences for competition, fitness, and long-term population resilience.Ekaterina ShcherbakovaZusammenfassung in deutscher SpracheMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

This Master thesis deals with the Finite Element simulation of Continuous Compaction Control (CCC) during dynamic soil compaction of non-cohesive earth-moist soils with an oscillating roller. During CCC, the oscillation roller serves on the one hand as a compaction device and on the other hand as a measuring device. The acceleration response of the drum centroid is measured, and simultaneously the so-called CCC-value is derived from this response quantity. The aim is to numerically determine the measurement depth of a roller of type HD+ 90 VO from HAMM AG under the assumption of constant machine parameters. In this work, the measurement depth is defined as the depth from which a change in the soil has practically no effect on the dynamic drum response and the CCC-value. Two existing two-dimensional models of the roller-soil-interaction system are extended in order to numerically determine the measurement depth. On the one hand, a model with a standing oscillating drum is considered and, on the other hand, a model with a moving oscillating roller is used. By modelling layered soils and local weak points in the soil, the influences of changes in soil properties on the drum response are investigated. For this purpose, the accelerations are analysed in the time domain and their amplitude spectra are examined in detail. In addition, the considered CCC-value is evaluated. Subsequently, it is discussed in detail how a measurement depth can be derived based on the two models. Two constitutive laws are used for modelling the soil: linear elasticity, which approximately describes a finally compacted soil, and hypoplasticity with intergranular strains, which can model both compaction and loosening effects. Element tests are used to simulate oedometer, triaxial and shear tests of a Karlsruhe fine sand, and the results are compared with numerical results and test data from the literature and with results from a MATLAB programme. This thesis contributes to closing the research gap with regard to the numerical determination of the measuring depth of oscillation rollers, offers approaches for further (numerical) investigations on the measuring depth and CCC with oscillation rollers and creates the basis for a possible optimisation of the CCC and subsequently for a more efficient, economical, resource-saving and thus more sustainable soil compaction with oscillation rollers.Ralph Bergmann, BScAbstract in englischer SpracheMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

Assessing publication bias in meta-analyses : a simulation-based evaluation of correction methods : are meta-analyses predisposed to be bias?

    No full text
Meta-analysis is a powerful tool for combining research findings, but it has its challenges with one of the biggest being publication bias. Studies with significant results are more likely to be published, while those with neutral or non-significant findings often go unnoticed. This thesis examines three widely used statistical methods—Precision Effect Test (PET), Precision Effect Estimate with Standard Error (PEESE), and Trim-and-Fill—to evaluate how well they correct for publication bias in different conditions. A wide ranging designed simulation was conducted with 144 conditions and 10,000 replications, also p-value-based filtering were applied at thresholds of 0.05, 0.10, 0.25 and 0.75 to see how each correction method adjusts estimated effect sizes. In addition, a more extreme bias threshold (0.99) was tested as a special case to assess its effect on correction performance. The results confirm that publication bias increases effect sizes, and while all three methods help adjust for this, their effectiveness work in different ways. PET tends to be less stable when bias is strong, PEESE produces more consistent estimates, and Trim-and-Fill tries to overcorrect when bias is extreme (0.99). ANOVA results confirmed a statistically significant effect of bias level on estimated effect sizes (F(3, 76) = 180.5, p < 0.001). Tukey’s post-hoc comparisons showed that corrections were most effective at bias thresholds of 0.25 or higher, suggesting that minimal bias adjustment (e.g., 0.05) may not sufficiently correct for selective reporting. These findings emphasize the need for researchers to use multiple bias-correction methods rather than relying on just one. More broadly, the study highlights the importance of transparency in research, such as pre-registering studies and publishing all results, not just significant ones. Future research should explore real-world validation of these methods and refine bias correction techniques by incorporating multi-criteria selection models that account for both p-values and effect sizes, improving the accuracy and transparency of meta-analytic estimates.Dylan Gatscher B.Sc.Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

Phenology, growth and drought responses of Platanus acerifolia in urban environment

Urbanization leads to environmental changes, such as increasing temperatures (heat island effect), pollution, massive soil sealing, and altered hydrology. Urban trees play a key role in mitigating these negative effects by providing essential ecosystem services. As climate change effects are even more pronounced in urban environments, research on urban trees will be important for the future. While there is extensive literature on urban greening, knowledge about the physiological aspects of urban trees remains limited. In this master thesis, the phenology, growth, and drought responses of Platanus acerifolia were studied under contrasting conditions in the Alpine city of Innsbruck. Environmental parameters and soil properties at several study sites were assessed, and climate data were recorded during 2024. In spring, bud burst and leaf development were observed, while in autumn, leaf shedding was evaluated. Tree stem increment was measured throughout the growing season using band dendrometers. During a drought period in August, additional measurements of soil moisture content, predawn and midday water potential, stomatal conductance, and photosystem II efficiency were performed. No differences in phenological patterns (timing of bud burst, leaf development, and shedding) were observed across the sites. However, in May, all trees showed significant leaf damage, and some individual trees exhibited premature leaf shedding in summer. Daily stem increment was positively correlated with precipitation across all study trees. Soil quality had influence on annual stem growth, while traffic intensity showed no correlation with increment. During the drought period, soil moisture content was correlated with soil sealing, and midday water potential was negatively correlated with stomatal conductance and soil sealing (except one tree). Performed analyses revealed that the phenological dynamics of Platanus acerifolia were hardly influenced by site specific conditions. In contrast, growth varied remarkably across sites with soil quality being important for annual increment. During drought, responses in water potential and stomatal conductivity indicated drought stress at some sites. This study demonstrates that urban trees are exposed to intense stresses which affect their vitality. Understanding physiological responses is crucial, as healthy trees are essential for resilient urban areas.

    No full text
Saharan dust events have been occurring with increasing frequency in recent years (Laken et al., 2013). The effects of such deposits on snow surfaces have already been extensively studied in works such as those by Di Mauro et al. (2015) and Flanner et al. (2012). Albedo – defined as the ratio of reflected to incoming shortwave solar radiation – varies significantly depending on the age and contamination of the snow cover (Warren & Wiscombe, 1980; Armstrong & Brun, 2010). Even small amounts of Saharan dust or soot lead to a measurable reduction in albedo, increase the absorption of shortwave radiation, accelerate snowmelt, and influence both surface temperature and runoff timing (Di Mauro et al., 2015; Flanner et al., 2012). This study examines the interactions between snow surface albedo, atmospheric processes, and climatic factors, with a particular focus on the role of Saharan dust events and their impact on the radiation balance of alpine snowpacks. The study area is the Rofental in the Ötztal Alps, specifically the weather station “Latschbloder” (2919 m a.s.l.). Here, the effects of albedo changes on snow height and snow water equivalent (SWE) are analyzed using a combination of field data, Excel-based sensitivity analysis, and simulations with the openAMUNDSEN model (Hanzer et al., 2016). The study period includes (1) two Saharan dust events in February and March 2022, and (2) the modeling of the entire 2021/2022 winter season. The applied methodology is divided into three steps: First, the shortwave incoming and outgoing radiation measured by the weather station, as well as the albedo values derived from them, are evaluated in relation to meteorological conditions and documented dust events. Next, the albedo decay function used in the model, which calculates albedo, is analyzed in Microsoft Excel. This step is crucial to understanding how the function responds to different input data and changes in parameter settings. Finally, a sensitivity study with openAMUNDSEN as well as a simulation of a two-week Saharan dust event was conducted. The results show that Saharan dust events can lead to a significant reduction in snow albedo and accelerated snowmelt. Based on the calculated data, an albedo reduction of approximately 4–5% was observed. The simulation of the 2021/2022 winter season, which included a two-week Saharan dust event, showed that the snowpack at the “Latschbloder” weather station (2919 m a.s.l.) melted about 32 days earlier than in the comparison simulation without this event.Jakub MikusAbstract in englischer SpracheMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

    No full text
This paper examines the question of whether the lessee - especially in finance leases - is entitled to its own claim for damages against third parties. The starting point is the various approaches in the literature and in case law. The case law is only very restrictive in awarding the lessee compensation in the context of a shifting of damages. A large part of the literature takes a completely different approach; according to this opinion, the claim for damages should be based on an analogous application of § 372 ABGB. The paper addresses these two currents and attempts to work out a third possible approach: Under certain circumstances, the lessee could also be entitled to a claim for damages on the basis of a breach of protective law pursuant to § 1311 S 2 2nd case ABGB. This seems particularly relevant in the area of motor vehicle leasing, as some provisions of the Road Traffic Regulations are qualified as protective laws by doctrine and case law. In this context, the new case law of the ECJ on the ‘emissions scandal’ is also taken into account. This is the first time that the ECJ has interpreted a directive as a protective law. Subsequently, the national courts also awarded the purchasers of emission-manipulated vehicles damages due to the manipulation of exhaust emissions. However, this claim has not yet been recognised for lessees. The paper examines these questions and comes to the conclusion that it is entirely justifiable to award the lessee a claim for compensation solely on the basis of the breach of the law. The lessee should also be entitled to compensation from the vehicle manufacturer in the context of the ‘emissions scandal’.Philipp SpielmannMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
