Storytelling and Transitional Society in County Fermanagh
Get PDFStorytelling is a major part of rural life in Ireland, both North and South of the Border, and has become a tool of reconciliation and peace building in transitional society. Sharing stories with friends, neighbours, and the younger generation is a way of creating social bonds, developing a narrative of the past, creating a shared identity, and establishing community boundaries. As a result, the peace building aims of using storytelling to generate mutual understanding and the use of storytelling by communities to define and maintain boundaries and legitimate their narratives of the past are in tension. Storytelling cannot be viewed as a neutral tool and an awareness of the agenda of each storyteller is important to understand what role and goals stories have in any given context. Using ethnographic research from the unionist community and the ‘Innocent Victims’ constituency in County Fermanagh, this paper will explore how storytelling is used to establish narratives of the past and assign blame for violence, support and critique the process of reconciliation within County Fermanagh and highlight the challenges that can develop when using storytelling as a tool for peacebuilding

Alzheimer’s disease: a fatal ‘lack of communication’ in the brain
Get PDFAlzheimer’s disease is a progressive, incurable disorder of the brain, first described by Dr. Alois Alzheimer in 1906. In Alzheimer’s disease, brain regions critical for memory and understanding are slowly obliterated. This results in impairment of these functions, more commonly referred to as dementia. It is widely recognized that, while Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, it is actually a disease of the brain and is not a result of the normal aging process. Approximately 24 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, with age as the primary risk factor. It is estimated that up to half of people over the age of 85 suffer from Alzheimer’s. Mobile tools for building maintenance

With advances in Information Technology, the integration of mobile devices with building management and automation systems is rarely exploited. Mobile solutions are currently being designed for personal communication and collection of information for various applications. The integration of mobile devices with inventory and stock systems, of which an example would be to check if spare parts are available for repair of a building system, like a pump, or if the part needs to be ordered. My research involves the use of building performance information, collected from sensors, meters and actuators for controlling building equipment, to support maintenance engineers and improve their decision-making process. Planning For Sustainability: Future Retail Centre Locations
Get PDFThe concept of ‘sustainable retail development’ implies that retail centres should serve their communities economically and socially, while not degrading local environments. However, existing evidence shows that shopping malls often negatively impact both the core and peripheries of city regions from environmental, social, and economic perspectives. This paper adapts commuting data to estimate the hypothetical shopping-related emissions associated with travelling to-and-from retail centres. We perform this analysis at the Small Area level for Ireland’s five major city regions. Our results suggest that the environmental degradation from retail centres increases as distances from urban cores increase
Sudanese Fermented Foods
Get PDFFermented foods of Sudan are a great source of affordable daily nutrition for many families and age groups all over the country. These foods include a diverse categorisation of starting ingredients and incur traditional methodologies of production which have been preserved for centuries. We used next generation sequencing (16S rRNA and 18S rRNA) to analyse 44 Sudanese Fermented foods in five major categories food types; sorghum, plant, meat, fish and dairy. Samples were collected in Khartoum, Sudan and analysed in Cork, Ireland. We found an extensive array of unique microorganisms in Sudanese fermented foods that extended over 1300 operational taxonomic units (bacterial identification) and many fungi. While many of these foods have healthy benefits for human health, harmful bacteria and fungi were also found owing to the preparatory methods of these types of food. Further research is required to isolate the microbiome of such foods and bring about health promoting effects of Sudanese Fermented Foods to light
