    The form and meaning: When English language teachers learn to teach through drama

    This article investigates the challenges teachers experience while learning to teach English through drama in an action research project. Through closely examining the fundamental causes, it discerns the knowledge constituents crucial for successful learning and implementation of drama for English teaching. Difficulties are identified from three aspects: text selection and interpretation, translation into drama activities, and classroom implementation. Referring to Shulman’s teacher knowledge construct (1986, 1987), the author argues that drama pedagogy for English teaching demands a changed perspective on language regarding its form and meaning and also on drama as both subject and pedagogy. Only then can teachers effectively link language and drama and create a meaningful learning experience

    Bringing it all together online: Performance, Outreach, and Education: The model of the German Theater Project at Indiana University

    Every year, the Department of Germanic Studies at Indiana University hosts a theater project for high school students from across the state. 2021 was the 8th consecutive successful year of the festival, and the second time it was held online. The main incentive of the project is to give German students of all levels a creative way to engage with the language through performance. In our article, we explore how to move the festival to a digital space during the pandemic, as well as how the project is organized in general. We write about difficulties and successes with the format, and show examples of student projects and educational workshops. The festival has thrived as an outreach program for the department, attracting more and more learners to German. Even though the project was switched to an online format, every year, an increasing number of high school students enthusiastically participate and use it as an outlet to show their love for language, culture, and performance

    Digitale Medien prägen unseren Alltag und verändern durch ihre Eigenschaften Kulturtechniken wie bspw. das Lesen maßgeblich (Wampfler & Krommer, 2019). Die Digitalität nimmt auch Einfluss auf die Kunstform des Theaters: So sind digitale Medien wie Online-Rollenspiele (z. B. Nellhaus, 2017) oder soziale Netzwerke (z. B. Lonergan, 2015) von theatralen Elementen geprägt, die das Potenzial eröffnen, das Konzept des Theaters zu erweitern und damit starre Grenzen zwischen Medien und verschiedenen Kunstformen verschwimmen zu lassen. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich vor diesem Hintergrund mit den Möglichkeiten „neue[r] Formen des Unterrichtens“ (Eickelmann & Gerick, 2017, S. 158), die digitale Medien für das szenische Lernen ermöglichen. Auf Grundlage praktischer Erfahrungen in einer Unterrichtseinheit zum Drama „Nathan der Weise“ im Fernunterricht eines Oberstufenkurses wird anhand des Tools StoryboardThat zur Gestaltung von Comics aufgezeigt, wie es durch seine spezifischen digitalen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten Aspekte szenischen Lernens ermöglichen kann. Dabei wird deutlich, dass starre Grenzziehungen zwischen den etablierten Kunstformen Comic und Theater durch Spezifika der Digitalität hinterfragt werden können und insbesondere Potenziale für die Individualisierung und Binnendifferenzierung im Unterricht bereithalten

    In order for bacteria to survive and grow in a particular environment, they must be able to defend themselves against competing bacteria. To do this, many produce antimicrobial compounds which kill their competitors without harming themselves. Bacteriocins are an excellent example of bacterially produced antimicrobials. Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria, which are safe bacteria found in milk, cheese and a variety of fermented foods, are the focal point of this research. Nisin is by far the most researched of all bacteriocins. Its first use as a food preservative was in 1953 and its use has been approved in 48 counties worldwide. After nisin, lacticin 3147 is one of the most thoroughly researched bacteriocins. The bacterial strain that produced lacticin 3147 was found in Ireland and lacticin 3147 is an Irish-owned bacteriocin.     Mankind’s rapidly increasing advancements in different industrial sectors demand a great price of environmental impact and climate change in return, specifically in the buildings and construction industry. The largest source of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption worldwide are buildings, estimated to account for almost 48% of all such emissions. Energy-related Carbon Dioxide (CO2) counts for about 82% of all greenhouse gases emitted by human activities. This total energy consumption translates to approximately 3.5 Billion Euros per annum. According to a report from the United Nations Environment Programme, the right mix of appropriate government regulations, greater use of energy-saving technologies and user behavioural changes can substantially reduce CO2 emissions from buildings. Physically, temperature is just another way of talking about the average speed of atoms.     Ecomusicology is an interdisciplinary field drawing together scholars from sciences and humanities who share a research interest in the overlapping of music, culture, and nature. Human and non-human animals constantly rely on sonic signals to relate with other animals and the environment. Considering this auditory connection, and the contribution that ecocritical music and music about places may have in nurturing a sentiment of environmental stewardship, I propose an applied environmental education methodology that relies on participatory music making and critical listening to foster environmental awareness

    Human-generated carbon emissions are the leading cause of climate change. There is a global commitment to reduce carbon emissions, in an effort to limit climate change effects. Many climate change solutions involve the mitigation of carbon emissions, mitigation alone is not enough. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) can live in the atmosphere for over 100 years. If we were to switch to 100% renewable energies, we would still damage the planet with the stagnant CO2 from the 1920’s. To combat climate change, we need a solution that can remove this carbon. One such solution is carbon capture, one of our best weapons in tackling climate change. The replacement of fossil fuel energy will not happen in the next few years, maybe not even for decades. Therefore, carbon capture is a promising ‘bridge’ technology, while we reach a sustainable level of green energy production. Carbon capture technology development has largely focused on singular processes (typically absorption, adsorption and membranes) capturing carbon from industrial exhaust systems. Recently, studies have delved into the idea of combining two or more of these technologies into one more efficient system and employing them in the industrial exhaust systems but also capturing carbon from the atmosphere. This project aims to develop a hybrid membrane and adsorption unit to capture carbon directly from the atmosphere. The aim is to provide the technology necessary to remove carbon from the atmosphere more effectively and cheaper than earlier technologies
