A vocational curriculum: developing a sense of identity and belonging in the hospitality workforce of tomorrow
The hospitality industry has a problem with retaining skilled staff. Traditionally employers have relied on tertiary institutions to train and prepare workforce entrants with the required skills and knowledge to participate in the hospitality industry. However, despite significant government investment, including the subsidizing of tertiary education and training, many hospitality graduates leave their profession early in their careers. This research focuses on the design of a hospitality management course in a Victorian tertiary education institution.Bachelor of Hospitality ManagementHolmesglen InstituteCAUTHE 2024University of Tasmania at The Hedberg, Hobar
Enabling cyber resilient shipping through maritime security operation center adoption: a human factors perspective
Open access. The increased adoption of digital systems in the maritime domain has led to concerns about cyber resilience, especially in the wake of increasingly disruptive cyber-attacks. This has seen vessel operators increasingly adopt Maritime Security Operation Centers (M-SOCs), an action in line with one of the cyber resilience engineering techniques known as adaptive response, whose purpose is to optimize the ability to respond promptly to attacks. This research sought to investigate the domain-specific human factors that influence the adaptive response capabilities of M-SOC analysts to vessel cyber threats. Through collecting interview data and subsequent thematic analysis informed by grounded theory, cyber awareness of both crew onboard and vessel operators emerged as a pressing domain-specific challenge impacting M-SOC analysts' adaptive response. The key takeaway from this study is that vessel operators remain pivotal in supporting the M-SOC analysts’ adaptive response processes through resource allocation towards operational technology (OT) monitoring and cyber personnel staffing onboard the vessels.Centre for Cyber Security and Digital Information TechnologyWestern Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), NorwayHolmesglen InstituteMarine Institute, Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), CanadaUniversity of South-Eastern Norway (USN), Norwa

Sport as a political football: understanding the logical collision of sport and politics
This is pre-published version of this article. While the sport-politics nexus is not new, there is little doubt that the collision of sport and politics has become more frequent, more complex, and in many instances, more intense. This paper draws on the theory and historical observations of Johan Huizinga and Norbert Elias to provide a theoretical lens through which we can understand the interplay between sport and politics. Furthermore, the Huizinga-Elias theoretical framework allows us to examine the role of sporting organisations in political and social conflicts, and how we can understand the complexities and nuances of how sporting organisations, and their athletes, have become engaged in political debates. The paper expounds the Huizinga-Elias theory through the case study of Australian Football League Indigenous footballer Adam Goodes who became engulfed in a nationwide social and political discussion about racism after he was racially vilified by a 13-year-old fan during a game in 2013.
The theory implies that the interaction between sport and politics is unavoidable, thus highlighting that sporting organisations should embrace this reality by promoting their values, orienting their actions towards a common good, playing an active role advancing society and ultimately fostering and enriching communities.Sports Media and Sport Business DegreesHolmesglen Institut
Building professionalism in the hospitality workforce of the future: a study of the Swiss VET curriculum
Past conference proceedings are available free of charge to current members (contact CAUTHE Secretariat) or for purchase though the CAUTHE online shop.
Full text papers from past CAUTHE conferences are available on the Informit (RMIT publishing), available through all Australian and some international University library databases. The hospitality industry faces a challenge with the supply of a skilled workforce to sustain its future. This is particularly true in the profession of cookery. This research investigates the Swiss vocational curriculum used to train apprentice cooks. The study examines the Swiss success in developing a sense of vocational identity and trade belonging in its students. It uses qualitative research to examine the values used to frame and inform the development of vocational curriculum. The research contributes to existing vocational education concepts of vocational identity building and belonging.Bachelor of Hospitality ManagementHolmesglen InstituteCAUTHE 2024University of Tasmania at The Hedberg, Hobar
A game-theoretic approach to containing artificial intelligence: insights from highly autonomous aggressive malware.
E-Journal.Artificial general Intelligence (AGI) promises transformative societal changes but poses safety and containment challenges. Large language models such as ChatGPT have intensified public expectations and apprehensions regarding AGI capabilities and risks. Existing research underestimated replicating human intelligence and lacks effective containment strategies scaled for AGI's complexity. We developed a cybersecurity-inspired framework to reconceptualize AGI containment as securing critical infrastructure indispensable for its operation. We applied game theory to model the strategic interplay between AGI and humans, drawing parallels with highly autonomous malware, emphasizing infrastructural dependencies and human countermeasures. We introduced offensive/defensive containment strategies and an AGI Kill Chain model profiling escalating AGI threats. Our game-theoretic approach examined complex AGI-human interactions revealing insights for adaptive oversight mechanisms. Game simulations demonstrated AGI carefully manages resources and autonomy balancing benefits against risks, necessitating strategic human responses. Our findings provided detailed containment tactics, emphasizing flexibility to address AGI's dynamic evolution. We proposed ongoing innovation for aligning AGI progression with utility and secuirty.Computing and Information TechnologyHolmesglen Institut
The effect of therapeutic and deterrent messages on Internet users attempting to access ‘barely legal’ pornography
Open access.Online child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is a growing problem. Prevention charities, such as Stop It Now! UK, use online messaging to dissuade users from viewing CSAM and to encourage them to consider anonymous therapeutic interventions. This experiment used a honeypot website that purported to contain barely legal pornography, which we treated as a proxy for CSAM. We examined whether warnings would dissuade males (18–30 years) from visiting the website. Participants (n = 474) who attempted to access the site were randomly allocated to one of four conditions. The control group went straight to the landing page (control; n = 100). The experimental groups encountered different warning messages: deterrence-themed with an image (D3; n = 117); therapeutic-themed (T1; n = 120); and therapeutic-themed with an image (T3; n = 137). We measured the click through to the site. Three quarters of the control group attempted to enter the pornography site, compared with 35 % to 47 % of the experimental groups. All messages were effective: D3 (odds ratio [OR] = 5.02), T1 (OR = 4.06) and T2 (OR = 3.05). Images did not enhance warning effectiveness. We argue that therapeutic and deterrent warnings are useful for CSAM-prevention.Centre for Cyber Security and Digital Information TechnologyLaw School, University of Tasmania, AustraliaJill Dando Institute of Security & Crime Science, University College London, UKSchool of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, La Trobe University, AustraliaHolmesglen InstituteCollege of Business and Economics, University of Tasmania, Australi
