    Get PDF
This article discusses the death traditions in the Islam Masade community in Sangihe, North Sulawesi, known as Piạ Susa. The study is based on the hybrid and syncretic religious practices of the community. The blending of Islamic elements, local beliefs, and Christianity has shaped the religious beliefs and traditions of Islam Masade into something unique and distinctive, including the Piạ Susa tradition. This research uses an ethnographic method to provide a clear depiction of the Piạ Susa tradition. The researchers engaged directly with the Islam Masade followers in Sangihe and relied on key figures within the community as research subjects. The study reveals that the Piạ Susa tradition is significantly influenced by Islamic teachings, mixed with various local elements, resulting in a hybrid tradition. From death announcements, funerals, prayers, to post-burial rituals, Islamic practices are infused with local nuances. In this perspective, Islam Masade can be seen as a localized expression of Islam in Sangihe or as a form of cultural dissemination from pure Islam. Besides serving as a tribute to the deceased, Piạ Susa also represents a sacred “life transition” process. Piạ Susa further serves as a means for the Islam Masade community to strengthen social solidarity, affirm identity, and maintain the existence of Islam Masade amidst dominant cultural influences

This study aims to present a critical edition of the text Dafʿ al-Turrahāt ʿan Wājibāt al-Ummahāt (MDTWU) authored by Habib Salim bin Jindan and to analyze his views on Muslim women. MDTWU was written as a response to Qasim Amin’s work, Taḥrīr al-Marʾah. This qualitative study employs a philological approach and intertextual theory. The philological method is applied to produce a readable and comprehensible text, while the intertextual approach is used to trace the interrelations between texts. The findings reveal that MDTWU is a codex unicus—the only known manuscript—preserved in a private collection at the Al-Fachriyah Foundation Library in Tangerang, Banten. Despite its limited circulation and the absence of printed editions, MDTWU provides an important contribution to the discourse on Muslim women in the 20th century. The analysis demonstrates that Habib Salim bin Jindan’s views are largely shaped by patriarchal constructions, emphasizing the preservation of traditional values amid modernization so that women may maintain their rights without losing their identity and dignity. The study further highlights the contrast with Qasim Amin’s perspective, which rejects the traditional confinement of women to the domestic sphere and interprets oppressive values as cultural constructs rather than authentic Islamic teachings. This study supports the findings of Tohari (2021) and Bachtiar (2023), which argue that women’s freedom should remain grounded in Islamic values as a source of legitimacy. Moreover, it suggests that Western-based concepts of women’s emancipation should be critically assessed to ensure their compatibility with Islamic ethical principles. This study examines the reality and application of the penalty clause in Istisna‘ and Salam contracts, clarifying its impact on contractual obligations, explaining the Islamic jurisprudential stance considering the nature of both contracts, and highlighting their similarities and differences. The study used the descriptive-analytical method to review juristic opinions and Sharia evidence and adopted the comparative method to analyze rulings and legal effects in Istisna‘ and Salam contracts. It found that the penalty clause is permissible in Istisna‘ contracts to ensure fulfillment of agreed specifications within the specified time, provided compensation is reasonable, not exaggerated, and for actual harm incurred. In Salam contracts, it is impermissible as it constitutes Riba al-Nasi’ah due to its relation to debt. The penalty clause is prohibited in Salam contracts but allowed in Istisna‘ under conditions of actual damage, adherence to terms, and reasonable compensation. Breaches in Salam can be addressed by cancellation or litigation. The study distinguished penalty clauses from earnest money (Arbun) and stressed the need for actual damage and conditions for enforcement

From Theocentric to Anthropocentric: Reconfiguring Tawḥīd in Contemporary Islamic Thought

This article examines the paradigm shift in tawḥīd from a theocentric–eschatological orientation to an anthropocentric framework by integrating the ideas of Ismāʿīl Rājī al-Fārūqī and Ḥasan Ḥanafī. Employing a qualitative, analytical–epistemological approach, Thomas S. Kuhn’s framework is used to trace the stages of normal science, anomaly, crisis, and paradigm revolution within the discourse of tawḥīd. Conceptual data are drawn from the principal works of both thinkers and analyzed comparatively and integratively. The findings reveal that the theocentric–eschatological paradigm continues to dominate Islamic scholarship and remains insufficiently responsive to contemporary humanitarian challenges. Al-Fārūqī’s tawḥīd-based principles, encompassing the unity of God, creation, truth–knowledge, life, humanity, and the reciprocity of reason and revelation, provide a multi-sectoral Islamic worldview. Meanwhile, Ḥanafī’s reinterpretation of classical kalām themes, particularly the doctrine of divine attributes, offers operational dimensions for transforming consciousness and guiding social praxis. Their integration produces an anthropocentric tawḥīd that supports the renewal of Islamic sciences, ethical–humanitarian agendas, and educational policy. This study contributes to restoring Islam’s vital élan as both a transformation of consciousness and a spectrum of exemplarity, offering a framework for contextual scholarly responses to the paradigmatic crisis facing Muslims in the digital age

STUDI FILOSOFIS TERHADAP KONSEP ZUHUD DAN TAZKIYAH AN-NAFS DALAM KEHIDUPAN KONTEMPORER

This study aims to explore the transcendental ethical dimension in the Sufi tradition through a philosophical examination of two key concepts: zuhud (asceticism, spirituality) and tazkiyah al-nafs (purification of the soul). This research is motivated by the phenomenon of contemporary life characterized by materialism, consumerism, and digital disruption that often erode human spiritual values. Instant lifestyles, an orientation towards instant gratification, and the increasing moral crisis indicate an urgent need to reintroduce transcendental values as a counterbalance. In this context, the concepts of zuhud and tazkiyah an-nafs in the treasury of Islamic Sufism are considered relevant for philosophical study. This article uses an Islamic philosophical approach and hermeneutic analysis. This research highlights the relevance of Sufi spiritual values in addressing the ethical and spiritual crises that plague contemporary life. The concept of asceticism in Sufism is not merely understood as a rejection of the world, but also as a form of inner discipline that balances human relations with God and the world. Meanwhile, tazkiyah an-nafs serves as a foundation for ethical transformation, emphasizing self-honesty, controlling desires, and purifying life's orientation. In a modern context characterized by hedonism, consumerism, and existential alienation, these values offer an alternative paradigm for building a holistic self-awareness and a life ethic oriented toward spiritual depth. This study concludes that transcendental ethics in Sufism can function as both cultural critique and a moral foundation for facing the challenges of humanity in the present era

TAFSIR KONTEKSTUAL ABDULLAH SAEED DALAM QS. ĀLI ‘IMRĀN [3]:161 DAN QS. AL-MĀ’IDAH [5]: 42 TENTANG KORUPSI

Corruption is a serious problem that undermines the social, political, and moral order of society, including in Indonesia. While the term “corruption” is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran, several terms, such as “gulul” (betrayal of a trust) and “as-suḥt” (bribery/illicit wealth), are closely related to corrupt practices. This study aims to analyze the verses of the Qur'an related to this phenomenon, especially QS. Āli ‘Imrān [3]: 161 and QS. al-Mā’idah [5]: 42, through Abdullah Saeed's contextual interpretation approach. The research method used is library research with primary sources in the form of the Qur'an and the works of Abdullah Saeed, as well as secondary sources in the form of classical interpretations, contemporary interpretations, and previous research that discusses the issue of corruption from an Islamic perspective. The results of the study show that classical to modern exegetes such as al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī, as-Shabuni and others interpret gulûl as betrayal in the distribution of war booty and as-suḥt as a form of bribery that undermines legal justice. Through a contextual approach, Abdullah Saeed expands the meaning of these two terms to make them relevant to contemporary corruption issues, namely all forms of abuse of public trust, embezzlement of assets, and bribery practices within the modern legal and bureaucratic systems. Thus, this study confirms that the Qur'an not only provides a moral prohibition against corrupt practices but also offers applicable social ethical principles to support corruption eradication in the modern era

Islam and The Issue of Poverty: Theological Reflection and Social Transformation in Muslim Society

    Get PDF
In the context of the continuously evolving issue of poverty and the increasingly complex global challenges, Islamic teachings offer a paradigm of social justice through wealth redistribution, which is manifested in the practices of zakat, alms (ṣadaqah), and philanthropy as a transformative solution. This study aims to analyze the role of theological reflection and philanthropic practices in poverty alleviation within contemporary Muslim societies comprehensively. The method used is a literature review and primary text analysis by referring to the Qur’an and Hadith as the main sources to reveal the values of justice and social responsibility contained in Islamic teachings, as well as to examine their practical relevance in the context of the modern economy. The results of the study show that the concepts of zakat and alms, as stated in Surah At-Taubah and Surah Al-Baqarah, provide a strong normative foundation for wealth redistribution and the reduction of social inequality. Furthermore, theological reflection in Islam encourages empathy and solidarity among Muslims, as evidenced by the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which emphasize the importance of mutual assistance in alleviating the burden of poverty. This study also reveals that the integration of empirical data and field studies is still needed to measure the actual impact of philanthropy implementation in addressing poverty in the modern era. Thus, the integration of theological values and philanthropic practices proves to have significant potential in alleviating poverty and building a more just, inclusive, and prosperous Muslim society

THEOLOGY OF JUSTICE AND GENDER MARGINALIZATION: A HERMENEUTIC ENGAGEMENT WITH FARID ESACK’S ISLAMIC THOUGHT

    No full text
The gender minority group of transgender individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Indonesia experiences poverty and multiple layers of vulnerability, leading to discrimination and social stigma. This discrimination is further exacerbated by governmental actions against transgender individuals living with HIV/AIDS (ODHA) on theological grounds. This study aims to analyse the rights to justice of transgender individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Indonesia through the lens of Farid Esack's theology of justice. This research employs a qualitative literature-based approach, utilising primary data sources that include Esack's works and writings on transgender individuals, comprising books, journal articles, documents, and other relevant materials. The data analysis technique applied is hermeneutics, which seeks to derive meaning and understanding (verstehen) in order to elucidate the text's inner significance. The findings of this study suggest that Farid Esack's concept of theology of justice, particularly the notion of tauhid, encompasses not only transcendental relationships but also social interactions. Moreover, those who attain the status of muttaqien are characterised by their concern for the suffering of others. This attitude of empathy and inclusion towards oppressed groups (mustad'afien) reflects an awareness of Allah's nature, which is both rahman and rahim. The contribution of this study lies in its efforts to reconstruct contextual theology to advocate for the rights of the gender minority group of HIV/AIDS-affected waria in Indonesia

VISUAL ICONOGRAPHY AND PERFORMATIVE SEMIOTICS IN A PEGON JAVANESE NAQSHBANDĪYAH AL-MRIKIYAH MANUSCRIPT

    No full text
This study investigates a 1954 Javanese Sufi manuscript written in Pegon script within the Naqshbandīyah al-Mrikīyah lineage. Addressing a gap in existing scholarship—which has concentrated predominantly on pre-20th-century Pegon Qur’anic exegesis—this article analyzes a modern non-exegetical Pegon Sufi text that articulates Naqshbandī metaphysics through Javanese mystical idioms. Methodologically, the study employs a compounded hermeneutic–semiotic framework, integrating Ricoeur’s layered model of textual configuration with Peircean triadic analysis to examine Pegon's lexical formations and the manuscript’s sixteen doctrinal and contemplative diagrams. The findings demonstrate that the manuscript generates a linguistic-performative matrix in which Pegon terminology and Javanese expressions such as kemrenthek operate as affective-semiotic modulators in dhikr and murāqabah. The diagrams function as epistemic icons that formalize interior states and encode the sequential logics of Naqshbandī contemplative praxis. The study advances current understandings of Javanese Sufi manuscript culture by elucidating the epistemological role of Pegon texts in vernacularizing Sufi metaphysics into localized semiotic architectures
