Fatwa and Religious Authority: Islamic Law, Social Media Ethics and Digital Age

    No full text
Fatwas issued by the ulama play a strategic role in shaping the trajectory of Muslim thought in the digital era, particularly as many Muslims lack direct access to, or the capacity to independently interpret, the primary sources of Islamic law such as the Qur’an and Hadith. This study examines the position of fatwas as a determinant of religious authority and explores their implications for the development of Islamic law in the digital age. Employing a qualitative research design, this study analyzes fatwas issued by the Indonesian Ulama Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia/MUI) concerning socio-religious issues. Data were collected through library research and examined using a normative-analytical approach, emphasizing contextual interpretation and doctrinal analysis. The findings demonstrate that MUI fatwas occupy a position of significant religious authority within the construction of Islamic law and possess substantial sociological and moral binding force. Muslim communities adhere to these fatwas because they are perceived as authoritative interpretations grounded in Islamic legal principles. Furthermore, fatwas contribute to the dynamic development of Islamic law and influence national legal frameworks. In the digital era, religious authority has become increasingly strategic, particularly following the issuance of MUI Fatwa No. 24 of 2017, which provides ethical guidelines for social media engagement, promotes social harmony, and seeks to prevent societal fragmentation in Indonesia

Psychological Resilience between Existential Psychology and Islamic Sufi Thought

    No full text
In contemporary societies marked by materialism, uncertainty, and psychological distress, the concept of psychological resilience has gained increasing scholarly attention. This study explores psychological resilience through a comparative analysis of Viktor E. Frankl’s logotherapy and Kiai Ihsan Jampes’s concept of zuhud as articulated in Sirāj al-Ṭālibīn. Employing a qualitative, library-based research design, the study analyzes primary texts: Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning and Kiai Ihsan Jampes’s Sirāj al-Ṭālibīn alongside relevant interdisciplinary literature. The findings reveal that although logotherapy and zuhud emerge from distinct intellectual traditions, both offer complementary frameworks for cultivating resilience. Logotherapy emphasizes the search for meaning, freedom of attitude, and responsibility in the face of suffering, while zuhud highlights detachment from excessive worldly dependence, acceptance (riḍā), and spiritual contentment. Beyond spiritual or ethical ideals, these principles function as psychological mechanisms that foster emotional regulation, inner tranquility, and adaptive coping. This study argues that integrating existential psychology with Islamic Sufi thought provides a holistic understanding of psychological resilience that bridges mental health and spiritual well-being in contemporary contexts

Inheritance Counseling and Mediation as Conflict Resolution in Contemporary Indonesian Muslim Families

    No full text
Inheritance disputes within Indonesian Muslim families often involve complex legal, social, and emotional dimensions shaped by Islamic law, state regulations, and customary practices. This article examines the role of inheritance counseling and mediation as non-litigation mechanisms for resolving inheritance disputes and preserving family harmony. Using a qualitative normative–empirical approach, the study combines field research conducted in Palangka Raya with an analysis of Islamic inheritance principles (fiqh al-mawārīth) and contemporary mediation frameworks. The findings demonstrate that inheritance counseling enhances legal awareness, clarifies rights and obligations among heirs, and prevents conflict escalation at an early stage. Mediation-based dispute resolution is shown to be more efficient, less costly, and more conducive to maintaining kinship relations than litigation. However, institutional mediation bodies remain underutilized due to limited public awareness and accessibility. This study contributes to Islamic family law scholarship by highlighting the integration of Sharīʿa-based inheritance norms with restorative and community-oriented mediation practices within Indonesia’s plural legal system

This study examines religious moderation messages conveyed through comics and quotes shared on the @iqomic Instagram account. In the context of Indonesia's diversity, conveying messages of religious moderation is very important to strengthen tolerance and prevent social conflict. This study uses a qualitative method with a netnographic approach, focusing on comic posts and quotes produced by Iqomic. Data was collected through direct observation of Instagram content, and in-depth analysis was conducted using semiotics theory on @qomic in relation to religious moderation and visual communication. The results of the study show that the delivery of religious moderation values in comics and quotes uses a visual narrative approach, easy-to-understand language, touching illustrations, and criticism of deviant practices in everyday life. These narratives illustrate the fulfilment of indicators of religious moderation. Meanwhile, the @iqomic audience tends to interpret these messages in various ways, including supportive, contrary, and doubtful interpretations. This research shows a novelty that the effectiveness of moderation messages is not only determined by content but also by the logic of interaction and the subjectivity of the audience

Internalizing Semar’s values in the development of counselor identity: A systematic literature review

    No full text
Recent discussions on counselor development in Indonesia highlight the importance of cultural foundations in professional formation; however, systematic studies examining local wisdom, particularly the values embodied by Semar, remain limited. This study aims to explore how Semar’s philosophical values can be internalized in counselors’ self-development and contribute to strengthening guidance and counseling (GC) services. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the PRISMA framework, this study analyzed articles obtained from Scopus, Publish or Perish, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar. From 84 identified articles, nine met the inclusion criteria based on relevance and quality. The findings indicate that Semar’s values—such as wisdom, empathy, sincerity, humility, emotional regulation, and dedication—provide a meaningful foundation for counselor character development. Integrating these values into counselor education and practice may enhance ethical awareness, cultural sensitivity, and humanistic counseling services, contributing to more holistic and culturally grounded counselor development models

Spread one’s wings: Cognitive-behavioral therapy for reducing interpersonal dependency in female college students

    No full text
Interpersonal dependency is a frequent clinical concern among female emerging adults and is linked to impaired autonomy and relational distress, yet evidence-based interventions in university counseling settings remain limited. This study examined the clinical utility of a brief Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) intervention targeting dependency-related cognitions and autonomy skills among female undergraduates with dependent personality features. Three students (ages 20–21) recruited from a university counseling service were screened using the Dependent Personality subscale of the PDQ-4+. A one-group pretest–posttest design with follow-up was employed. Interpersonal dependency was assessed using the Interpersonal Dependency Inventory (IDI) at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and follow-up, supplemented by qualitative clinical evaluation. Participants showed clinically meaningful and sustained reductions in IDI scores, alongside improvements in boundary setting, independent decision making, and emotion regulation. Findings suggest that brief CBT-based interventions may be feasibly integrated into routine university counseling services, while highlighting the need for larger controlled studies

This study compares the accuracy and quality of Arabic-to-Indonesian administrative document translation through two approaches: conventional (manual) translation using an Arabic dictionary and automated translation using Artificial Intelligence. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a comparative case study design, focusing on a Bachelor's Degree Certificate in Journalism from Akhbar Elyom Academy, Egypt (2017). The data corpus consists of the original Arabic version of the certificate and two translated versions: one produced through conventional translation and the other generated by ChatGPT. Analysis was conducted side by side, emphasizing semantic accuracy, lexical equivalence, and textual readability. The theoretical framework draws upon the equivalence concepts of Eugene Nida and Peter Newmark, as well as diction evaluation principles proposed by Gorys Keraf. The findings indicate that conventional (manual) translation performs better, particularly in terms of denotative and lexical accuracy, while ChatGPT translation tends to excel in readability, contextual appropriateness, and the use of more common diction. This study recommends a hybrid approach that integrates the strengths of traditional Arabic dictionaries with advancements in artificial intelligence to enhance the quality of Arabic-to-Indonesian translation

Women's Agency in Preserving Ngasa Gandoang Mountain Alms Ritual

    No full text
Investigations into the contributions of women in safeguarding indigenous oral traditions, especially within sacred ceremonies, remain comparatively scarce. This investigation underscores women's agency as cultural stewards in the Ngasa Gandoang Mountain Alms ritual in Salem, Brebes, Central Java, which is deeply intertwined with local ecospirituality. Employing the theoretical lenses of gender agency and oral tradition, this study seeks to examine women's involvement in sustaining and reproducing ritual significance, investigate the elements that empower women to attain prominence in a cultural-religious domain typically dominated by men, and assess women's approaches in upholding the endurance of tradition amid currents of societal transformation and modernization. The methodology incorporates feminist ethnography, encompassing in-depth interviews, participant observation, and source triangulation. Findings indicate that women occupy a pivotal role in upholding spiritual principles, fostering collective remembrance, directing ritual proceedings, and deciphering symbolic interpretations. The originality of this research resides in the reinterpretation of Ngasa Gandoang Mountain Alms through a gender lens that portrays women as proactive contributors to informal cultural transmission. The study's implications encompass the necessity for women's integration into cultural conservation initiatives, the formulation of role-oriented educational and archival strategies, the incorporation of gender viewpoints in sustainable tourism, and avenues for additional inquiries to investigate analogous dynamics in diverse regions or modernization contexts
