    Get PDF
This study examines the phenomenon of catcalling in religious college environments. The objectives of the study were to describe catcalling behavior, identify forms of catcalling, and map locations where catcalling occurs in colleges. The study used a mixed-methods approach with data collection through surveys that were further in-depth with interviews. Informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique with the criteria of students who had experienced catcalling. The results of the study showed that catcalling that occurred among students took the form of whistling, excessive greetings, and compliments that were sexual or demeaning. This form of catcalling caused feelings of discomfort, anxiety, and threat to the victim. Catcalling behavior occurs due to a lack of knowledge that such actions are a form of verbal sexual harassment. In addition, other motives found were the urge to be playful, seek attention, and feelings of superiority from the perpetrator towards the victim. The locations where catcalling occurs are generally in public spaces on campus, such as classroom hallways, parking areas, and gazebos. The analysis was conducted using Michel Foucault's theory of power relations to understand the dynamics of power in the context of catcalling, including how social norms, gender structures, and knowledge shape these harassment practices. This study also found a form of resistance from students, both individually and collectively, to the practice of catcalling through critical awareness and reporting to the authorities. This study is expected to be the basis for developing campus policies that are more responsive to the issue of sexual harassment

    Get PDF
This research aims to examine the integration between Islamic business management and Islamic social finance within the framework of Pancasila values as a strategy to build an inclusive development paradigm in Indonesia. Inclusive development is an important approach in dealing with socio-economic inequality, structural poverty and financial exclusion. This research applies a literature study method with a qualitative normative approach to analyze the basic principles underlying the policy and provide applicable recommendations in the context of an equitable and sustainable Islamic economy. Data was collected through a secondary literature review from reliable sources, including scientific journals, books, and official documents published between 2020-2025. The analysis process was carried out through three stages: data reduction, presentation of findings in the form of narratives and visualizations, and verification and conclusion drawing in a qualitative descriptive manner. The results show that the integration of these values forms an ethical and normative basis for equitable and sustainable economic governance. The Islamic business management model that integrates Islamic work ethics and maqashid al-syari'ah principles has a strong meeting point with the values of Pancasila in building a participatory economic system. Islamic social finance instruments such as zakat, waqf, and BMT have proven effective in expanding financial inclusion and empowering marginalized groups. This study recommends strengthening value-based policies, civil society participation, and economic and spiritual literacy as strategic steps in building an economic ecosystem oriented towards collective welfare and sustainability

The Epistemology of Ijtihad Irsyadi in Fatwas: A Deconstruction of Takhrij Mażhabi through Case Studies of the Lirboyo Fatwa Council

    Get PDF
The rigidity of the takhrīj mażhabi methodology in pesantren fatwa traditions necessitates a new epistemological approach that is more responsive to contemporary realities. This study aims to explore ijtihād irsyādi as a methodological alternative that maintains continuity with classical tradition while enabling contextual creativity grounded in maqāṣid al-sharī’ah. Employing a qualitative-descriptive-analytical-exploratory approach and a case study method focused on the fatwas of the Lajnah Bahtsul Masail (LBM) Lirboyo from 2019 to 2024, the analysis reveals significant epistemological transformation in istinbath structures. Key findings demonstrate that ijtihād irsyadī prioritizes maslahat (public interest), referential flexibility, and social interpretation as legal foundations, replacing the deductive-formalistic patterns of madhhab-based takhrīj. This approach reinterprets classical authority through maqāṣid frameworks without negating its legitimacy, as evidenced in the 2023 BPJS Healthcare fatwa that teleologically reconstructs social insurance concepts via taḥrīr al-mafhūm (conceptual liberation), tanqīḥ al-manāṭ (ratio legis purification), and ta'līl maqāṣidī (teleological justification). The novelty lies in articulating an adaptive, integrative fatwa epistemology that proactively engages temporal dynamics, offering a reformative paradigm for Indonesian pesantren fatwa methodologies and a substantive contribution to renewing contemporary Islamic legal thought

EXPLORING MOBILE BANKING ADOPTION IN INDONESIAN ISLAMIC BANKS: AN APPLICATION OF THE UTAUT2 MODEL

    Get PDF
Users of smartphones, PDAs, or other mobile devices can independently perform financial transactions via mobile banking anytime and anywhere. This study aims to understand the factors influencing customer adoption and continued usage of mobile banking services in Indonesia by applying the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2), which considers user experience, gender, age, and education level as moderating variables. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed both online and offline to 226 users of Islamic bank mobile banking services in Indonesia. Selected using a non-probability purposive sampling method, targeting individuals with prior experience in using mobile banking. The sample consisted of respondents from various provinces across Indonesia, predominantly from Java and Kalimantan, with diverse backgrounds in terms of age (mainly aged 30–40 years). The data were analyzed using Smart PLS 4 software. The findings reveal that effort expectancy, habit, hedonic motivation, and social influence significantly influence the adoption and use of mobile banking services. The demographic analysis indicates that users with master’s degrees and those in the 30–40 age group are the most likely to adopt these services. These findings provide strategic insights for Islamic financial institutions aiming to maintain and enhance customer engagement with mobile banking. This study offers a novel contribution to academic discourse and delivers actionable recommendations for policymakers and banking practitioners to design inclusive and Sharia-compliant digital transformation strategies

ISLAM, SANTET, AND COLLECTIVE VIOLENCE: TRANSITIONAL POLITICS AND MEMORY IN BANYUWANGI, 1998–1999

    No full text
This article investigates how the discourse of witchcraft (santet) was mobilized into collective violence in Banyuwangi in 1998–1999, and how Islam, local tradition, and the political stigma of anti-communism intersected in the escalation of killings. The article combines event reconstruction and discourse reading with theoretical lenses drawn from Charles Tilly’s framework on collective violence, Johan Galtung’s concept of structural violence, and Claude Lévi-Strauss’s insights on myth and collective imagination. It’s connect structural conditions, actor mobilization, and the production of cultural meaning. This article argue that the violence—claiming more than 194 lives—cannot be reduced to a spontaneous religious clash or a purely cultural aberration. Instead, it was a product of transitional politics, in which economic crisis, uncertain authority, and the lingering anti-communist stigma enabled santet to operate as a moral classificatory instrument facilitating labelling, dehumanization, and the legitimation of killing. In the aftermath, the tragedy reshaped Banyuwangi’s social narratives through transformations in collective memory, identity reconstruction, and the articulation of new religious and cultural narratives during the Reformasi period. This article contributes to the understanding of santet by integrating structural, mobilizational, and cultural-imaginary dimensions to explain it not merely as a “local belief,” but as a politically consequential mechanism in the production of collective violence in Banyuwangi

ABDUCTIVE REASONING AND THE RENEWAL OF ISLAMIC THEOLOGY: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF ANTI-SHĪʿĪ TENDENCIES IN INDONESIA

    No full text
This study seeks to offer a renewal-oriented reading of Islamic Theology (kalām) in light of the abductive method proposed by the Indonesian thinker Amin Abdullah, as an alternative approach capable of breaking the epistemic stagnation in advanced Islamic studies and overcoming the epistemological impasse inherited by classical kalām from the medieval period. The study further attempts to employ this method in analyzing the rise of anti-Shīʿī tendencies in Indonesia, viewing them as a model of theological–political conflict reproduced within the local context. Adopting a comparative critical-analytical approach, the study concludes that the renewal of kalām cannot be achieved except through a re-reading of the theological tradition in light of contemporary social and political realities, alongside the integration of abductive reasoning, which enables intellectual flexibility and multiplicity of hypotheses without falling captive to sectarianism or exclusionary dogmatism

Hasan Al-Turabi's Expansive Logic: A New Approach to the Development of Indonesian Ushul Fiqh

    No full text
The interdisciplinary field of uṣūl al-fiqh has to come to terms with the difficulties that arise from the consequences of dynamic socio-technology and political changes. While most classical methodologies (especially qiyās and istishāb) tend to become overly focused on cause and text, with little to no attention to the context. There have been a number of studies on Hasan Al-Turabi's legal and political thought, while attention has been scarce for the integration of his reconstruction of qiyās and istishāb, particularly with regard to the development of uṣūl al-fiqh in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze Al-Turabi's concept of expansive logic, particularly in relation to al-qiyās al-wāsiʿ and al-istishāb al-wāsiʿ, and its methodological implications for Islamic legal reasoning in Indonesia. Based on qualitative library research and thematic content analysis of Al-Turabi's main works, the study aims to recover the epistemological and operational foundations of his legal reasoning. The study implied that Al-Turabi's expansive logic constitutes a methodological reconstruction of maqāṣid in such a way that it is not limited to an ‘illah’ based restrictive analogy or an unchanging legal continuity but incorporates justice, public welfare, and social context. Local Indonesian thought reflects sophisticated engagement with the legal nationalism of Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy and Hazairin in respect to contemporary legal issues and ijtihād. This scholarship locates expansive logic and interdisciplinary engagement as a plausible methodological pivot, situating Islamic legal thought in the Middle East alongside innovations in uṣūl al-fiqh in Indonesia.

Digital Literacy and ICT Self-Efficacy as Determinants of Teachers’ Functional Skills in Islamic Secondary Schools in Pakistan

    No full text
This study investigates the relationship between digital literacy competence and ICT self-efficacy in shaping functional skills among students in Islamic secondary schools. As digital technologies become increasingly embedded in educational practices, disparities in technological engagement highlight the need to understand how digital competencies influence students’ problem-solving, critical thinking, and descriptive abilities. Employing a quantitative approach, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to teachers and students in Islamic secondary schools. Statistical analyses, including correlation and moderation tests, were conducted to examine the interrelationships between digital literacy, ICT self-efficacy, and functional skills, as well as to explore potential gender-based differences in technological knowledge and confidence. The findings indicate that higher levels of digital literacy are positively associated with stronger ICT self-efficacy and enhanced functional skills. Gender-based analysis suggests variations in digital confidence and technology use patterns. These results underscore the importance of strengthening digital literacy and self-efficacy to support skill development in faith-based educational settings. The study contributes to educational technology discourse by highlighting the role of digital competence in fostering functional skills and informing more inclusive and effective technology integration strategies in secondary education
