    Get PDF
This study aims to enhance Arabic listening and speaking skills among Islamic elementary students through a puppet-based storytelling method that integrates Islamic intellectual heritage with contemporary pedagogical practices. Arabic is approached not merely as a communicative tool but as a medium of identity formation and transmission of Islamic cultural values. Conducted through Classroom Action Research (CAR) over two cycles in a sixth-grade class at SD IT Al-Abror, the study applied storytelling as a culturally embedded and spiritually enriching strategy that supports students’ linguistic development. Results indicated significant improvement in students’ listening and speaking abilities, particularly in content accuracy, fluency, pronunciation, intonation, and confidence, with listening scores rising from 61.84% (pre-cycle) to 77.68% (cycle II). The findings affirm that bridging classical Islamic pedagogies with modern narrative-based approaches fosters meaningful Arabic instruction grounded in religious, cultural, and educational contexts. This study contributes to the development of Arabic language education as both a cultural-linguistic heritage and a dynamic domain within Islamic elementary education

Feedback on students’ writing is important to improve the students’ writing quality. However, due to the limited time for interaction with the lecturer during writing lessons, the lecturer may struggle to provide comprehensive feedback to students regarding their errors. One solution is to use Grammarly as an automated tool for written corrective feedback. This research aims to investigate students’ perceptions of automated written corrective feedback provided by Grammarly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing classes and to examine students’ responses to Grammarly feedback when they receive it. This research was qualitative. The research participants were three EFL undergraduate students who had joined an Academic Writing class at one of the universities in Surakarta. This research employed the narrative inquiry method, gathering data through a narrative frame, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. This research used purposive sampling for the research participants and interactive model analysis to analyze the data. The findings reveal that students generally find Grammarly a valuable and accessible tool that enhances their writing by providing immediate corrections for grammatical errors. However, there are mixed feelings about the appropriateness of some feedback, and students often feel the need to double-check Grammarly’s suggestions. The students also perceive that Grammarly does not always give appropriate feedback and that Grammarly has some features that require a subscription to Grammarly Premium. Moreover, the students’ responses are by accepting the feedback from Grammarly and paying attention to the explanation of the feedback. Its effectiveness relies on students critically proofreading their suggestions to ensure they are correct. This research can benefit students who learn English as a foreign language and as a second language in writing classes. The implications suggest that integrating automated written corrective feedback, such as Grammarly, can address time constraints in learning activities while enhancing self-learning, writing skills, and engagement

This study investigates the application of J.C. Catford's translation shifts in the Indonesian subtitles of the animated film "The Journey," a collaborative project between Japan and Saudi Arabia that depicts historical events in Mecca before the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Using a descriptive qualitative approach, we analyzed various linguistic units such as words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from the film's subtitles to identify structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. The primary objective was to assess how these shifts maintain semantic and syntactic integrity while ensuring the translation remains coherent and contextually appropriate. The findings reveal that structure shifts were the most frequent, accounting for 58% of the total shifts, followed by unit shifts (23%), class shifts (11%), and intra-system shifts (9%). These shifts were essential in adapting the subtitles to the grammatical and cultural norms of the target language (TL). The study contributes to the field of translation studies by providing practical insights and guidelines for translators, emphasizing the importance of using appropriate translation techniques to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps. Ultimately, the research enhances understanding and appreciation of translated animated films among diverse audiences

Fostering social inclusion in Islamic elementary schools: Teacher support, peer interaction, and religious values

    No full text
Inclusive education extends beyond physical access to schooling and requires meaningful social participation among all learners, including students with special needs. In Islamic elementary schools, inclusive practices are further shaped by religious values that emphasize compassion, justice, and collective responsibility. However, empirical evidence remains limited on how social interactions are enacted in everyday classroom life and how teacher support operates within faith-based inclusive settings. This study aims to examine how social interactions between students with special needs and their peers manifest in inclusive Islamic elementary schools and to analyze the role of teacher support in shaping the form, quality, and sustainability of these interactions. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected over six months through participant observation, in-depth interviews with teachers, students, and parents, and document analysis in three inclusive Islamic elementary schools in Kartasura, Indonesia. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that social interaction is highly context dependent, with more frequent and reciprocal engagement occurring during structured learning activities, while unstructured situations such as recess remain vulnerable to social exclusion. Teacher support emerged as a decisive factor in fostering inclusion through emotional reassurance, instructional scaffolding, and social mediation, particularly when grounded in Islamic values such as rahmah (compassion), cooperation, and moral responsibility. The study concludes that teachers function as key agents of social inclusion in Islamic elementary schools, and that culturally grounded, sustained teacher support is essential for strengthening peer acceptance and meaningful participation. These findings offer important implications for teacher preparation, inclusive pedagogy, and policy development in faith-based educational contexts
