FROM FANTASY TO REALITY: THE VISUALIZATION AND TRANSFORMATIVE THINKING OF THE CHARACTER BARBIE IN ITS MOVIE VERSION

    Get PDF
The representation of women’s identities in the media has undergone significant shifts amidst the dynamics of contemporary popular culture. The film Barbie (2023) presents a narrative that not only showcases symbols of femininity but also offers a reflective journey of a character questioning the meaning of her existence. This research aims to analyze the process of transformative thinking in Barbie’s character, based on Mezirow’s (1994) transformative thinking theory, as well as to examine the visual signs and symbols in the film through the semiotic approach of Barthes (1968). the data were collected through visual observation, transcription of reflective scenes, and documentation of narrative symbols. The data were then analyzed using a content analysis method. The results show that the character Barbie undergoes stages of transformative thinking from disorienting dilemma to transformation of perspective which are represented through the changes in body language, critical dialogue, and visual symbols, such as costumes and colours. This process not only reflects Barbie’s personal journey from doll to human but also voices a critique of gender social construct symbols, such as high heels, the colour pink, and Barbie’s interactions with other characters. These all emphasize the shift from the representation of women as passive to active and reflective subjects. Thus, the Barbie movie offers a new space for interpreting women’s identities and demonstrates the potential of popular media as a means of critical and transformative reflection

    Get PDF
This study investigated the efficacy of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology in Indonesian pronunciation training for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), addressing a notable research gap concerning its specific effectiveness and learner perceptions. Employing a mixed-method quasi-experimental design with experimental (n=20) and control (n=20) groups, the research utilized pronunciation tests, perception questionnaires, and interviews. Based on the paired sample t-test, findings showed that AI TTS was significantly more effective than conventional methods in improving BIPA learners’ pronunciation in accuracy, fluency, and intelligibility. This efficacy is attributed to AI's capacity for immediate, personalized feedback and objective analysis. The qualitative data analysis revealed that learners reported overwhelmingly positive perceptions regarding AI TTS's effectiveness, engagement, and confidence-boosting impact, appreciating its non-judgmental and accessible nature. However, limitations emerged concerning voice naturalness, intonation accuracy, and the interpretation of contextual nuances. Concerns were also raised about potential over-reliance on AI, technical reliability, and data privacy. These findings strongly advocate for a blended learning approach in BIPA pronunciation instruction, strategically leveraging AI's strengths while preserving the essential value of human teaching for higher-order linguistic and cultural competence. The study contributes to applied linguistics by providing empirical insights into AI applications in second language acquisition beyond English contexts and offers practical guidance for developing adaptive, user-centered BIPA curricula and fostering responsible AI integration

    Get PDF
The integration of technology in early education presents new opportunities for second language (L2) acquisition. Grounded in Stephen Krashen’s influential theory, this study investigates the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based on Krashen’s language acquisition theory to create an optimal learning environment for young children. The primary purpose was to determine the effectiveness of an AI-assisted learning system on the linguistic skills and affective development of preschool-aged L2 learners. This study employed a 24-week, quasi-experimental, mixed-methods design. Sixty children aged 3–6 were assigned to either an experimental group using the AI system or a control group receiving conventional instruction. The AI platform was engineered to provide comprehensible input and real-time feedback within a gamified, low-anxiety setting. Quantitative data were sourced from pre- and post-tests measuring receptive skills, productive skills, and speaking fluency. Qualitative data were gathered through classroom observations, interviews with stakeholders, and teacher focus groups. The results indicate that the experimental group achieved significantly higher gains across all tested language domains compared to the control group. Furthermore, learners using the AI system demonstrated notable improvements in affective factors, reporting higher motivation and engagement alongside lower language anxiety. Qualitative analysis corroborated these findings, revealing increased confidence, enjoyment, and spontaneous language use among children in the experimental group. This study provides strong evidence that a theoretically-grounded AI system can effectively facilitate L2 acquisition in early childhood. By fostering a rich, interactive, and emotionally supportive environment, such technology offers significant implications for designing and implementing advanced language curricula for young learners

THE IMPACT OF PERCEIVED BRAND INTERACTIVITY, SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING, AND HALAL LABELING ON PURCHASING DECISIONS: THE MEDIATING ROLE OF TRUST IN TIKTOK SHOP

    Get PDF
This study examines the influence of perceived brand interactivity, social media marketing, and halal labeling on purchasing decisions, with trust as a mediating variable. A total of 96 Hanasui cosmetic users in Salatiga City who had experience with the TikTok platform were selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis involved instrument testing, classical assumption testing, and path analysis. The results show that perceived brand interactivity has no significant effect on either trust or purchasing decisions. In contrast, social media marketing and halal labeling significantly and positively affect both trust and purchasing decisions. Furthermore, trust plays a pivotal role, not only directly influencing purchasing decisions but also mediating the effects of perceived brand interactivity, social media marketing, and halal labeling. These findings highlight that trust strengthens the effectiveness of social media marketing and halal labeling in shaping consumer behavior, while brand interactivity alone is insufficient to drive purchasing decisions. Among the variables tested, social media marketing and halal labeling emerged as the strongest predictors of purchasing decisions for Hanasui products on TikTok. Overall, this study underscores the strategic importance of building consumer trust through social media marketing and halal labeling in Indonesia’s digital marketplace

    Get PDF
This study aims to validate a contextualized Islamic Workplace Spirituality Scale (IWSS) specifically designed for Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. The instrument incorporates three core spiritual dimensions derived from Islamic teachings—taqorrub (devotion to Allah), muroqobah (spiritual self-awareness), and istiqomah (steadfastness)—which are operationalized into 10 measurable indicators. Using a cross-sectional survey, data were collected from 354 teachers across various Islamic education levels in Central Lampung Regency. The validity and reliability of the instrument were assessed using Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (EFA and CFA) with SmartPLS 3.0. The results confirmed that the instrument is both valid and reliable, making it suitable for measuring workplace spirituality within Islamic education settings. Key findings indicate that teachers exhibit a high level of workplace spirituality, with taqorrub emerging as the strongest dimension. This suggests that spiritual values play a central role in shaping teachers’ professional behavior and motivation. The study underscores the importance of integrating spiritual development into human resource strategies to enhance organizational effectiveness and efficiency. However, its scope is limited to a single district, highlighting the need for broader studies across multiple regions or countries to increase generalizabilit

    Get PDF
This study examines the accessibility of MSME financing in Islamic banks, focusing on the transformations accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. As community activities were restricted, Islamic banks rapidly digitized their services to maintain customer engagement. Despite digital advancements, financing processes, especially for MSMEs, still heavily rely on face-to-face interactions, which pose challenges for MSME clients with limited access to information, capital, and guarantees. Using a quantitative approach with SmartPLS, the research investigates the impact of various financial inclusion indicators on MSME financing. The outer model test confirmed the validity and reliability of all variables (AVE > 0.50, Cronbach’s Alpha > 0.75). The inner model test revealed that office networks and IRDPK significantly influenced MSME financing, while ATM availability showed a moderate effect. Additionally, the IRPBY variable did not exert a positive impact. This study highlights the crucial role of Islamic bank office networks in facilitating MSME access to financing, especially in the halal sector, and suggests that further digital innovations could enhance accessibility

    Get PDF
Afghanistan continues to grapple with profound challenges in delivering equitable and high-quality education, particularly in marginalized regions, despite concerted efforts to enhance educational access. This qualitative study investigates the policy frameworks and educational quality of community-based education (CBE) programs in two provinces, Nangarhar and Laghman. CBE initiatives are pivotal in mitigating barriers to education in areas beset by enduring sociopolitical adversities. Employing in-depth semi-structured interviews with nine participants—three community leaders, three directors of organizations implementing CBE, and three educators—in conjunction with a rigorous policy analysis, this study evaluates the efficacy and implementation of these programs. The findings emphasize that while CBE initiatives have markedly increased enrollment rates and bolstered community engagement, significant disparities persist in the quality of education and the execution of policy directives. Key determinants such as local governance structures, resource distribution, and cultural attitudes toward education profoundly influence these outcomes. Furthermore, challenges surrounding teacher qualifications, learning environments, and integration with the national education system remain critical concerns. This study culminates in a set of strategic recommendations aimed at refining policy frameworks and enhancing program management to address these deficiencies and advance educational outcomes
