Does ChatGPT-Integrated Learning Affect Indonesian EFL Learners’ Grammar Achievement?
While artificial intelligence in language learning has gained more attention, the effect of ChatGPT-integrated learning on English grammar remains largely underexplored. To address this significant gap, this study aims (1) to investigate the effect of ChatGPT-integrated learning on English grammar achievement and (2) to explore learners’ experiences and perceptions after engaging with ChatGPT to learn English grammar concepts. Sixty learners were involved in this quasi-experimental study, split into experimental and control groups. During the 6-week language instruction, the experimental group received ChatGPT-integrated grammar learning while the control group received non-ChatGPT-integrated grammar learning. Data were collected from pre-test, post-test, and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative data, the pre-test and post-test, were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U Test, while the qualitative data, the semi-structured interview, were examined through thematic analysis. The result revealed that ChatGPT-integrated learning enhanced students’ grammar achievement. Although both groups enhanced their grammar scores, students from the experimental group obtained significantly higher scores than those from the control group. Most students had favorable perspectives on using ChatGPT in their English grammar learning instructions. However, some were found to worry about the likelihood of dependency and declined critical thinking. Careful planning of its pedagogical compatibilities, communication of potential risks and ethical considerations, and guidelines are needed to navigate the complexities involved in adopting ChatGPT into ELT classrooms and to mitigate the potential drawbacks of ChatGPT within the education field. This study, therefore, calls for policies and guidelines to integrate ChatGPT into curriculums
The role of artificial intelligence in enhancing Lecturer professional development and performance management
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, particularly for teacher professional development, has gained attention in recent years. However, its application in assessing lecturer performance and fostering growth remains underexplored, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. This study aimed to investigate how AI can enhance lecturer performance assessment and support personalized professional development, with a specific focus on higher education level. An exploratory case study design was employed, involving 15 lecturers teaching at several universities in Jakarta and two policymakers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's qualitative data analysis methods. The findings revealed that AI tools, such as Socrative, Edthena, and Teacher Advisor with Watson, were effective in providing personalized feedback and performance assessments, which led to improved lecturer knowledge and classroom effectiveness. However, challenges such as resistance to change, inadequate infrastructure, and data privacy concerns were identified as significant barriers to AI adoption. The study concludes that AI has great potential to enhance teacher development but requires systemic support, including infrastructure, training, and clear data management policies. The findings suggest that AI can significantly improve teaching practices if integrated thoughtfully and equitably across educational institutions. These insights contribute to the growing discourse on digital transformation in education by offering practical implications for policymakers and institutions aiming to leverage AI for faculty development
Analisis Framing Pemberitaan Naturalisasi Pemain Tim Nasional Indonesia pada Media Republika Online dan Kompas.com
This research examines how Republika Online and Kompas.com frame the naturalized players of the Indonesian national team through text analysis. The phenomenon of player naturalization has become a controversial issue in Indonesian society along with PSSI's policy of massively recruiting players of Indonesian descent to strengthen the national team. This research employs a qualitative approach using the Zhongdang Pan & Gerald M. Kosicki framing analysis model. The study reveals that both Republika Online and Kompas.com frame the coverage of Indonesian national team's naturalized players positively. However, the difference lies in Republika Online's use of assertive editorial content, while Kompas.com reports the momentum comprehensively and straightforwardly, without using the editorial term "naturalized players.
Funny Salafism: Reframing Orthodoxy for Global Engagement on Social Media
This study examines the evolving dynamics of Salafi preaching, focusing on how humor has been integrated into da’wah through social media platforms. Using netnography as a methodology, the research investigates the humorous style of Shaykh Assim al-Hakeem, whose global popularity exemplifies a shift from traditional, rigid Salafi approaches to more dynamic, engaging, and relatable methods. By analyzing content from platforms like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook, the study highlights how humor facilitates broader audience engagement and fosters “mediated intimacy” with followers. This approach transcends sectarian boundaries, attracting both Muslim and non-Muslim audiences while reshaping public perceptions of Salafi identity. However, critiques persist, as some view this adaptation as masking the doctrinal rigidity and conservative underpinnings of Salafi ideology. The findings contribute to discussions on the intersection of digital media, religious authority, and identity in the contemporary Islamic world, emphasizing how Salafism negotiates the challenges and opportunities of the digital age to maintain relevance in diverse socio-political contexts
Between Piety and Excess: Cult-Like Behavior in the Al-Shādziliyyah Pondok Pesulukan Thoriqot Agung (PETA) Order
This study explores community perspectives on Sufi orders, focusing on the al-Shādziliyyah Order of Pondok Pesulukan Thoriqot Agung (PETA) in Tulungagung, East Java. The rapid growth of Sufi movements in Indonesia has given rise to various religious expressions, including strong emotional ties and loyalty to spiritual leaders (mūrshid). In this Order, the emergence of cult-like behavior has raised concerns about the limits of religious reverence and its alignment with Islamic teachings. Using a qualitative approach, this research examines the extent and nature of such behavior and whether it departs from Qur’anic and Hadith principles or remains within accepted Sufi piety. Georg Simmel’s theory of social interaction is employed to analyze how social bonding and charismatic authority contribute to excessive veneration. Data were collected through fieldwork, semi-structured interviews, and literature review. The findings show a range of attitudes among followers, from sincere devotion to problematic loyalty, particularly the belief in the mūrshid’s spiritual infallibility. These patterns are reinforced through ritual practices, group dynamics, and the leader’s perceived charisma. This study contributes to the discourse on contemporary Sufism in Indonesia by highlighting the sociological mechanisms that shape religious authority and group cohesion. It calls for critical reflection within Sufi Order communities to maintain a balance between spiritual guidance and theological boundaries
Female Sufi Authority: Sufi Ideas in Żikr an-Niswah al-Muta‘abbidāt aṣ-Ṣūfiyyāt by as-Sulamī
The ideas of Sufism actually do not recognize the identity of its followers, male or female. Women in Sufism have an important position so that their ideas need to be explored. One of the efforts to find the ideas of female Sufis is through Sufi hagiographic texts (ṭabaqāt). This research discusses the formation of the authority of female Sufis based on their ideas through one of the classic Sufi hagiographic texts by as-Sulamī. This type of research is qualitative, based on document research, and uses the analytical-descriptive method. The primary source is a female Sufi hagiography text by as-Sulamī entitled Żikr an-Niswah al-Muta'abbidāt as-Ṣūfiyyāt. Secondary sources are other classical Sufi hagiography texts such as those by al-Iṣfahānī, al-Harawī, al-Qusyairī, al-Hujwīrī, al-Jāmī, Ibn al-Jauzī, and 'Aṭṭār, as a well as supporting authoritative books and articles. The findings of this study show that, in addition to recognizing the existence of female Sufis, as-Sulamī managed to record their various statements that are full of Sufism ideas and this showed their authority in this tradition. The author collects their Sufism ideas in two main ideas; Tazkiyyah an-Nafs and Sufistic Ethics. The idea of Tazkiyyah an-Nafs is contained in their narratives which envision that humans can establish a positive relationship between themselves and their God. Meanwhile, the idea of Sufistic Ethics is contained in their narratives which discourse that the positive relationship between humans and their God, must form a similar thing between themselves and His creatures.
Does Electronic Word Of Mouth Mediate The Impact Of Product Quality And Brand Image On Smartphone Purchasing Decisions?
This study investigates the mediating role of electronic word of mouth (e-WOM) in the relationship between product quality, brand image, and smartphone purchasing decisions. A quantitative survey was employed, targeting Samsung smartphone users in Jembrana Regency, Bali Province, Indonesia. Data were collected from 156 respondents through convenience sampling at six major smartphone retail outlets. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the data using the Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) method. The results reveal that both product quality and brand image have a significant positive effect on e-WOM. Additionally, product quality was found to have a direct positive influence on purchasing decisions. However, brand image and e-WOM did not show a significant direct effect on purchasing decisions. Furthermore, e-WOM did not mediate the relationship between either product quality or brand image and purchasing decisions. These findings suggest that tangible aspects of product performance influence Samsung users more in this regional market than online reviews or brand perception. The study implies that maintaining high product quality is critical, as it remains the only significant driver of purchase decisions in this context. Future research is recommended to explore the influence of social or cultural factors that may explain the weak impact of e-WOM and brand image on consumer behavior in localized smartphone markets
KONSEP DAN IMPLEMENTASI CINTA: STUDI KOMPARASI PEMIKIRAN IMAM GHAZALI DAN ERICH FROMM
Human life is inextricably linked to love, whether it is needing or giving love to oneself or to others, because in order to achieve happiness, humans need love. The purpose of this article is to compare the concept of love in the views of Imam Ghazali and Erich Fromm, both of whom are leading figures in the fields of Sufism and existentialist philosophy. This article uses a qualitative research method with a literature review approach sourced from books, articles, and information data relevant to the discussion of the concept of love. The results of this study are as follows: First, the concept of love in Imam Ghazali's view means enjoyment that requires effort. Love for Allah is absolute love through the medium of love for oneself, love for fellow human beings, and love for the beauty created by Allah. Second, the concept of love in Erich Fromm's view is one of the solutions to overcome feelings of separation and alienation. Third, the implementation of love for fellow human beings in Imam Ghazali's view means that every human being must behave fairly, be forgiving, give advice, and be generous, which is manifested in human relationships. Meanwhile, in Erich Fromm's view, love for fellow human beings can be manifested in the form of knowledge, respect, care, and responsibility
Balancing bytes and biases: A case study of AI adoption in academic human resource management
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming Human Resource Management (HRM), yet its adoption within the unique context of higher education institutions remains underexplored, particularly in developing nations. This study addresses this gap by investigating the application and implications of AI in core HRM functions, specifically recruitment, performance evaluation, and workforce planning, at a public university in Indonesia. Adopting an exploratory qualitative case study methodology, this study sourced data from twelve purposively selected stakeholders, including HR managers, academic leaders, and IT personnel, through semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and non-participant observation. The collected data were systematically analyzed using thematic analysis, revealing a dual impact of AI adoption. While AI integration significantly enhances operational efficiency by automating recruitment screening and supporting data-driven workforce planning, it also introduces critical challenges, including the risk of algorithmic bias, a lack of transparency, and the potential erosion of human judgment in culturally sensitive evaluations. The study concludes that successful AI implementation in academic HRM is contingent upon institutional readiness, a supportive organizational culture, and a robust technological infrastructure. By applying the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and Diffusion of Innovation (DoI) frameworks, this research contributes a nuanced understanding of the factors shaping AI adoption in higher education, underscoring the necessity of a balanced approach that leverages AI's benefits while preserving essential human oversight in university administration
Elementary school teachers' perception of artificial intelligence integration in curriculum management
Curriculum management is a key element in ensuring effective and efficient teaching and learning processes in schools. With the emergence of digital transformation in education, artificial intelligence (AI) offers new opportunities to enhance curriculum planning, implementation, and evaluation. This study explores elementary school teachers’ perceptions of integrating AI in managing the Independent Curriculum in Indonesia. A qualitative design with a thematic analysis approach was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 55 purposively selected teachers from West Java who have implemented the Independent Curriculum since 2021. Each interview lasted for 20–30 minutes and focused on four core aspects: urgency, strategies, challenges, and support for AI integration. The analysis was conducted using NVivo 12 to identify recurring patterns and themes. Findings reveal that teachers perceive AI as crucial for supporting the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5), providing greater autonomy for both students and teachers, refreshing the learning process, and enabling more contextual curriculum management. Teachers adopt various strategies such as aligning AI with curriculum principles, applying innovative learning approaches, and using AI to map students’ needs. However, challenges remain, including limited technological literacy, inadequate infrastructure, and time constraints. Support is mainly derived from training programs, teacher working groups, and school facilitators. The study concludes that AI integration holds strong potential to improve educational quality in elementary schools, but sustained capacity building, supportive policies, and adequate resources are essential for successful implementation
