Integrating Islamic values and technological advancements in leadership and governance: A qualitative study of elementary school principals in Nigeria

This study explores how elementary school principals in Abuja, Nigeria, integrate Islamic leadership values and information and communication technology (ICT) in their leadership styles and governance practices. As educational institutions face increasing demands for ethical leadership and digital governance, this research examines how faith-based values and technological tools converge to shape school management. The study aimed to investigate two key areas: (1) the leadership styles of school principals informed by Islamic principles, and (2) the implementation of good governance through participatory and transparent practices supported by ICT. A qualitative multiple case study design was employed, involving 12 principals from Islamic-oriented elementary schools in Abuja. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations, then analyzed thematically using a coding framework based on Islamic leadership theory, transformational leadership, and good governance models. Findings revealed that principals adopted a hybrid leadership model combining Islamic ethics, such as amanah (trust), adl (justice), and shura (consultation), with transformational leadership traits, including staff motivation and collaborative vision. ICT tools such as WhatsApp, Google Forms, and digital dashboards were used to enhance transparency, stakeholder engagement, and performance monitoring, all while reinforcing Islamic values of accountability and justice. The study concludes that effective educational leadership in Islamic contexts can be both spiritually grounded and technologically adaptive

Deciding To Be A Widow or Stay with A Husband: The Experience of Muslim Women Filing for Divorce in the Aceh Sharia Court

This article examines the lived experiences of Acehnese women who initiate divorce (khulu’), focusing on the socio-religious, cultural, and legal dimensions that shape their decisions. This study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The study captures the voices of women from various socio-economic backgrounds through in-depth interviews, aiming to explore their motivations, internal conflicts, and post-divorce realities. Findings indicate that marital dissatisfaction, domestic violence, infidelity, economic independence, and growing awareness of women’s rights are key drivers for seeking divorce. Despite strong religious and cultural norms that often frame divorce as morally undesirable, these women navigate complex legal pluralism and social stigma with remarkable agency. The study underscores how intersecting factors, such as patriarchal interpretations of syarī‘ah, customary values, and legal constraints, impact women’s decision-making processes. Ultimately, the article contributes to the discourse on gender justice, Islamic family law reform, and women's empowerment in Muslim-majority contexts. Policy implications include the urgency of expanding legal aid services, gender-sensitive judicial practices, and community education to uphold women’s rights and dignity in the realm of Islamic marital law

Integrating Maqashid al-Sharia, Fiqh al-Bi’ah, and Islamic Ethics for Sustainable Water Management: A Case Study of Indonesia

Water resource management is a critical component of environmental sustainability, directly influencing the availability and quality of water for human consumption and ecological systems. Indonesia, as the world's largest Muslim-majority country, faces significant water management challenges, including resource mismanagement, inefficient water systems, and weak institutional framework. However, this study is unique as it develops the comprehensive Sharia-based framework for water governance in Indonesia, integrating Islamic principles particularly Maqashid al-Sharia (Islamic legal objectives) and Fiqh al-Bi'ah (Islamic environmental jurisprudence), as well as Islamic ethics into water resource management to achieve sustainability. Using a normative-juridical and interdisciplinary qualitative approach, the research analyzes Islamic texts, legal documents, environmental data, and expert opinions through content and comparative analysis. The findings reveal that Indonesia’s Water Quality Index (WQI) slightly improved from 53.88 in 2022 to 54.59 in 2023, yet water pollution persisted in 11,019 villages/sub-districts as of 2024, with Central Java being the most affected (1,366 cases). The integrated Islamic framework emphasizes the preservation of life, intellect, wealth, progeny, and religion, aligned with the principles of maslahah (public interest), ‘adl (justice), and khalifah (stewardship). This model offers both normative direction and practical solutions for policymakers, religious authorities, and environmental institutions to address water-related challenges through an ethical and faith-based lens

Integration of Maqāṣid Sharia and Social Philanthropy in the Economic Empowerment of the Shrimp Pond Labor Community

The pond industry plays a crucial role in shaping the social and economic landscape of local communities. However, the economic empowerment of pond workers has yet to demonstrate a substantial positive impact on broader community welfare. This study examines how economic empowerment initiatives targeting pond worker communities contribute to their well-being, using the Maqāṣid Sharia framework and evaluating the role of social philanthropy integrated by PT. Panen Berkat Sejahtera Bersama. Data were collected through unstructured interviews and direct observation at pond sites, focusing on the economic effects experienced by workers’ families. Findings indicate that the pond industry significantly enhances community economic welfare. It provides permanent employment with relatively stable income for workers, while seasonal harvests offer temporary work and bonuses that boost earnings for casual laborers. This improved income contributes to better living standards, including home renovations, children's education, and the fulfillment of daily necessities. From the perspective of Maqāṣid Sharia, the industry contributes positively to several key dimensions: ḥifẓ māl (protection of wealth), ḥifẓ ‘aql (protection of intellect), ḥifẓ dīn (protection of religion), and ḥifẓ nasl (protection of progeny). The study highlights the importance of supportive policies that strengthen the pond sector by expanding access to education, vocational training, and sustainable employment, thereby enhancing the overall welfare of pond workers

The Role of Zakat and Wakaf in Reducing Economic Risks in Jayapura

Zakat and waqf are significant social financial instruments in Islam that play a vital role in reducing economic risks and improving the welfare of society. Zakat, as an obligatory act for financially able Muslims, serves to redistribute wealth equitably and help those in need. Meanwhile, waqf involves giving assets for the public good in the long term, contributing to the development of education, health, and infrastructure. This study aims to see how zakat and waqf play a role in reducing economic risks, especially in the Jayapura area. In Indonesia, especially in Jayapura, the potential of zakat and waqf is very large in supporting economic growth and poverty alleviation. However, challenges such as public distrust of management institutions, low awareness of zakat obligations, and less than optimal utilization of waqf assets hinder its effectiveness. A SWOT analysis shows that with the right strategy, weaknesses and threats in zakat and waqf management can be overcome, maximizing their potential to improve community welfare. Collaborative efforts between the government, zakat and waqf management institutions, and the community are essential to improve literacy, transparency, and accountability in managing resources so as to optimize the role in reducing economic risks and promoting community welfare in Jayapura

This study aims to analyse Ahmad Tohari's novel Lingkar Tanah Lingkar Air through a postcolonial approach to reveal the representation of identity conflicts and resistance as a result of colonialism and neocolonialism. Using text analysis methods and the postcolonial theoretical framework of Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha, and Gayatri Spivak, this study identifies how the characters in the novel deal with ideological, cultural, and political colonial pressures and develop complex forms of resistance, both physical, cultural, and spiritual. The results of the study show that the identity conflict in the novel is not merely a personal conflict but a reflection of the struggle between local heritage and colonial hegemony. Resistance is depicted as a collective process to reclaim power and cultural autonomy. The conclusion of this study affirms that the postcolonial approach not only enriches the interpretation of this novel but also opens up space for a deeper understanding of identity struggles and resistance strategies in the context of contemporary Indonesian literature.
