The phenomena of superhero localization can be seen through the product of Spiderman in Japan which uses the famousness of robot technology, creating Spiderman in robot shape. In India, Spiderman is localized using India’s cultural costume, and in Indonesia, Spiderman is localized into comic entitled “Laba-Laba Merah” that has extremely different aim from the original. Another Indonesian localization product is the Sitcom of Superhero Kocak produced by E-Motion Entertainment, which has not been discussed previously. Therefore, this research aimed to explore and reveal the localization strategy, the impacts on character equivalence, and the applying particular dominant related to the character of Sitcom. Several theories used were Localization Strategies (Van Leeuween and Suleiman, 2010), Narrative Identity (Paul Ricoeur, 1992), Character Equivalence (Petrucci, 2012), Sitcom TV Genres (Brett Mills, 2009), and the characteristic of superheroes (Nachbar & Lause, 1992). A descriptive-qualitative method was used and data were collected through the captures of western superheroes’ films and Superhero Kocak. Specifically, the captures taken were those that provided the nine characteristics of superheroes (Nachbar & Lause, 1992). According to the 60 data obtained, the results showed that, first, all western superheroes were localized by applying narrative-visual localization strategy. Second, narrative-visual localization strategy affected character equivalence and narrative identity to be shifted. Third, particular dominant localization of narrative-visual was applied in regard to the character of Sitcom. In conclusion, the application of narrative-visual localization strategy formed changes in character equivalence and narrative identity towards superheroes. It also caused a shift in message and purpose between western superheroes and Superhero Kocak. Superhero Kocak became a parody with the purpose as mere entertainment for people

Objective: The rapid expansion of digital technologies has intensified adolescents’ exposure to online gambling, raising concerns about its social, educational, and psychological consequences. This study aims to examine patterns of online gambling among adolescents, associated behavioral changes, and the implications for education within the local context of Cilegon City, Indonesia. Method: Using a qualitative document-based research design, the study analyzes secondary data drawn from local statistical reports, policy documents, academic studies, and school- and community-based intervention records related to online gambling. Result: The findings indicate that adolescent engagement in online gambling is facilitated by high digital accessibility, peer influence, and the normalization of gambling elements in online gaming environments. Behavioral changes observed include increased impulsivity, emotional instability, social withdrawal, and distorted perceptions of risk and reward. These behavioral shifts are closely linked to educational consequences such as declining academic engagement, reduced learning motivation, and weakened school attachment. Family and school contexts emerge as critical factors, functioning both as sources of risk and as potential protective environments, depending on the quality of supervision, communication, and institutional support. The study highlights significant gaps in preventive efforts, particularly the lack of structured school-based programs and coordinated home–school interventions. Conclusion: The findings underscore the need for integrated, education-centered prevention strategies and context-sensitive policies to address adolescent online gambling as a multidimensional social and educational issue

Surakarta Gastronomy in Student Presentations to Increase Self-Confidence and Reduce Speaking Anxiety

    No full text
This study aims to analyze how Surakarta gastronomy can be utilized as a cultural context to reduce students' speaking anxiety and increase their confidence in academic presentations. The phenomenon of speaking anxiety remains a dominant issue for Indonesian Language Education students, especially when they have to demonstrate their oral skills in front of the class. This anxiety generally arises from performative pressure, fear of making mistakes, and a lack of relevant and meaningful speaking experiences. Given the importance of context in language learning, the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approach is considered an effective strategy because it emphasizes authentic experiences, collaboration, and the production of concrete artifacts. This qualitative study used presentation observation, in-depth interviews, visual documentation, and performance assessment to collect data. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that using Surakarta gastronomy as a project context was able to reduce students' speaking anxiety by providing a topic that was familiar, emotionally close, and rich in cultural values. Through involvement in the culinary project, students appeared more confident, more expressive, and better able to convey ideas coherently. Learning also became more collaborative and dialogic, thus providing a safe space for students to experiment with language. These findings confirm that gastronomy-based PjBL is an innovative and relevant pedagogical alternative for teaching speaking skills in higher education.

A GRAMMATICAL COHESION IN EFL WRITING: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF HIGH- AND LOW-GRADE STUDENTS’ ESSAYS

    No full text
This research investigates how university students with varying proficiency levels utilize different types of grammatical cohesion and identifies the types that are most frequently employed in their essays. It employs a descriptive, qualitative design, drawing on the conceptual frameworks of grammatical cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan, as well as Gerot and Wignell. The data were obtained from 21 students’ essays, comprising 12 high-grade (HiG) and 9 low-grade (LoG) students. Each student should compose four essays. The analysis involved counting the occurrences of each type of grammatical cohesion in the essays from both groups, followed by a closer examination of the specific types used. The findings reveal that both groups relied predominantly on conjunctions, followed by references, ellipsis, and substitution. HiG students demonstrated reasonable control in using cohesive devices, which supports the quality of their essays. Unlike HiG students, LoG students tended to overuse and misuse conjunctions, resulting in redundancy and run-on sentences. From a pedagogical perspective, these findings emphasize the importance of teaching design. LoG students require explicit teaching and guided practice to understand and apply cohesive devices in meaningful contexts. Meanwhile, HiG students should focus on more advanced cohesion skills through analytical writing tasks, peer review, and practices emphasizing coherence and effective text. Keywords: cohesive, conjunction, reference, high grade, low grad
