Analysis, simulation and optimization of the milking process in a cowshed for the production of Parmigiano Reggiano

    No full text
The aim of this study is to optimize the current milking process of a cowshed, which provides milk for the production of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. The ultimate goal of the analysis is to reduce the time required for milking operations, thus optimizing the whole management of the farm processes. The analysis described is based on a real case study, referring to a farm located near Parma (Italy). To optimize the milking process, a discrete-event simulation model was designed under Simul8TM professional platform. The model reproduces the main processes of the cowshed, and in particular, the movements of the animals inside the cowshed, during milking. Real data were collected to allow the reproduction of the milking process. Exploiting again the simulation model, two new configurations of the cowshed layout were designed and tested, and their performance, in terms of the total time required for milking, was compared to the current one, showing interesting savings

Computational Models for Laminated Doubly-Curved Shells with Variable Radii of Curvatures Using Weak and Strong Formulations

    No full text
The study of doubly-curved shells has been growing in different engineering branches, such as mechanical, civil, aerospace and naval due to their practical applications to structural components, roofs, wings and hulls. Moreover the use of laminated composite materials is increasing due to the advantages that these materials give to these structures, such as lightness, stiffness and strength. It should be remarked that the use of laminated composite materials bring theoretical difficulties to the classical shell theories, since the anisotropic behavior of these structures does not allow to use classic thin shell theories anymore. For this reason higher order formulations and layer-wise modes have been introduced for this purpose, in order to avoid the computationally inefficient 3D elasticity. Another problem is related to the geometric description of these structures when variable radii of curvature are considered, due to the fact that the geometric parameters change point by point on the three-dimensional shell solid. In order to solve all these problems the present work employs a higher order formulation coupled with the differential geometry and a numerical technique based on strong and weak formulations. The present procedure leads to stable, accurate and reliable results for the structures at hand and allows to study complex structures without neglecting the curvature effect and the rotary inertia. Both the free vibration and the static problems will be discussed with a particular emphasis on the stress and strain recovery procedure, which is a major problem for the evaluation of the through-the-thickness quantities of shell structures

Simulation of two hybrid production planning and control systems: A comparative analysis

    No full text
The goal of this paper is to analyze and compare the performances of two Hybrid Production Planning and Control (HPPCs) systems, namely CONWIP and Workload Control. Although several implementations of HPPCs reported excellent results, in fact, many authors have discharged the concept, arguing that these systems can only reduce manufacturing lead times and control WIP to the detriment of production rate, punctuality or service level. The paper starts from a brief review of the literature on HPPCs. Afterwards, the paper uses a common simulation model from the literature to compare two simple and easy-to-implement configurations of CONWIP and Workload Control against the baseline of a classic push system. The results of the simulations lead to important conclusions and suggest interesting improvements of simulation models and future directions of research for better understanding HPPCs

Clinical examination and treatment of a leg ulcer caused by a stingray puncture

    No full text
The most frequent causes of leg ulcers include venous incompetency (superficial and deep), arterial insufficiency, trauma, vasculitis, and neoplasm. Leg ulcers from injury by stingrays are quite rare. In this case report, we describe a leg ulcer caused by a stingray sting complicated by infection, which healed completely without surgery. In addition, since there few cases in the literature describing such traumas, we performed a comprehensive review of the literature. Important is the fact that the wound healing was complete without resorting to surgery, but only with a correct targeted antibiotic therapy and the use of a collagenase, which has the particularity of having hyaluronic acid as a component. © The Author(s) 2014

Quali formatori per la formazione per la sicurezza sul lavoro? Appunti sul decreto interministeriale del 6 marzo 2013

    No full text
