Design for the Enhancement and Reactivation of Small Walled Towns Stretch the Edge: A Case Study Analysis and Data Visualization.
Territories located in inland areas, marked by natural or artificial fortifications, are often a focus of attention because, despite their immense cultural, historical, and natural her- itage, they are frequently in a state of abandonment and depopulation. Many disciplinary fields are involved in the reactivation, regeneration and enhancement of these areas. This research aims specifically to investigate, map and ana- lyze case studies in which design has played an active role in these types of contexts. 150 case studies, from 28 countries, were collected and catalogued. The data was then pro- cessed and made usable through data visualizations. Finally, a summary framework identifies the three main categories in which design-driven actions have fostered the reactivation of these places

Fernanda Wittgens. Arte e impegno civile
This article traces the life of Fernanda Wittgens, an art historian and the first female Director of the Pinacoteca di Brera. It focuses particularly on her early professional experiences and her activities during the Second World War. Wittgens’ intellectual development took place in 1920s Milan. The text analyzes some of her work as a columnist for the newspaper «L’Ambrosiano», for which she covered the city’s social and cultural debates. In this role, she highlighted the significant contribution of female protagonists who demonstrated and affirmed the emancipation of women. The reconstruction of her professional career also gives attention to Wittgens’ collaboration on the Exhibition of Italian Art, exhibition held in London in 1930. The text also provides an overview of Wittgens’ efforts during the Second World War to save the artistic heritage of the Pinacoteca di Brera, with a focuse on the transfer of artworks to shelters located in Montefeltro and Urbino, identified by Superintendent Pasquale Rotondi. Her participation in the Milanese resistance network, which provided assistance to anti-fascists and victims of racial persecution, is also examined, with a specific emphasis on her arrest and imprisonment in San Vittore jail. The final part of the article documents Fernanda Wittgens’ post-war efforts to create an inclusive and democratic cultural space, also through the practice of the “living museum”
"Mare fuori" is an Italian television series produced by Rai Fiction and Picomedia and created by Cristiana Farina, now available on Netflix. The series is also known by the international title "The Sea Beyond" and focuses on the events of the inmates and staff of an imaginary juvenile detention institute in Naples, freely inspired by the Nisida prison. Beyond its unanticipated audience acclaim, "Mare fuori" has functioned as a catalyst for the emergence of a novel cohort of Generation Z actors, whose rapid ascent to celebrity has been significantly increased by their use of social media platforms. Consequently, this series presents a compelling case study for the examination of teen dramas’ celebrity phenomena and their intricate relationship with gender constructs. This essay focuses on the female characters in "Mare fuori" and on a dual journey: the onscreen one, analyzing the gendered representations of female inmates, victims and perpetrators of crimes; and the offscreen one, the movement from anonymity to stardom, through an analysis of "Mare fuori"’s main actresses and their self-branding on social media
Calculating shear lag in steel-concrete composite beams under combined compression and bending
Long and complex composite steel-concrete structures are becoming common, requiring a deep understanding of the effects induced by the simultaneous action of axial forces and bending. In fact, the axial force generated, for instance, by cable inclination in cable-supported structures can modify the stress distribution within the elements compared to bending scenarios, thereby necessitating a revision of the effective width to be utilized. Nonetheless, current design codes, including Eurocode specifications and others, lack provisions for addressing the combined effects of axial force and bending, as they are exclusively tailored for bending. This limitation can introduce design complexities, necessitating the implementation of intricate Finite Element (FE) models, which impose substantial computational loads and design efforts. The methodology proposed in this paper overcomes these challenges allowing to assess the stress distribution and resistance of composite deck at Serviceability Limit State (SLS) and Ultimate Limit States (ULS) by leveraging results obtained from standard beam models typically used by structural designers or practitioners. A comprehensive parametric analysis using nonlinear finite element models is performed to validate the developed methodology. A comparison with the Eurocode 4 formulations highlights that the proposed method provides superior accuracy in estimating peak stress in concrete slabs under combined compression and bending. Additionally, it facilitates straightforward verification at the ULS in compliance with Eurocode requirements
