An adapted water wave optimization algorithm for routing order pickers in manual warehouses

    No full text
In this paper, we present a new algorithm for routing order pickers in manual warehouses and optimizing the total distance covered. The proposed approach is an adaptation of the recent water wave optimization (WWO) algorithm, a nature-inspired algorithm based on the shallow water wave theory. The algorithm is tested on a rectangular 1-block warehouse, with 12 aisles and 45 storage locations per aisle side (1080 storage locations overall). The depot is located at the bottom left corner of the warehouse. A Microsoft ExcelTM file was programmed to reproduce both the adapted WWO algorithm and to test its performance, in terms of the travel distance covered by pickers. A formal design of experiment (DOE) analysis is carried out on some of the algorithm parameters, to assess their effect on the performance observed (namely computational time and number of iterations required to reach convergence) and identify the optimal setting

Analysis and evaluation a WEEE management system in Italy: a simulation study

    No full text
This paper presents a simulation study to evaluate the current performance of a waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) management system in the north of Italy. The model takes into account several actors of the real WEEE supply network and allows to analyze different alternative scenarios for the functioning of the same network. The behavior of a real treatment plant has been simulated considering the incoming flow of waste material and all the outflows of recycled goods. The analysis is focused on two specific WEEE categories treated in the plant, which have been chosen as the most dangerous categories for the human health and the environment. Some key performance indicators (KPIs) have been defined and used to assess the performance of the current WEEE network and compare it with some alternative configurations. As it grounds on a real scenario, the model is expected to provide interesting proposals for future actions about the WEEE management in Italy

RFID technology for blood tracking: An experimental approach for benchmarking different devices

    No full text
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the paper is to design a testing protocol to measure performances of RFID devices applied to blood supply chain, and to implement an experimental campaign in order to collect performance data. The protocol matches operational conditions in blood supply chain and is particularly tailored to some critical processes, which can benefit from RFID adoption. The paper thus strives at benchmarking performances of inlays, fixed and handheld RFID readers, when deployed in the blood supply chain processes. DESIGN, METHODOLOGY, APPROACH: The adopted testing protocol enables the assessment of performances of RFID devices in processes of the blood supply chain, since it has been developed peculiarly to emulate critical logistics processes. The testing protocol has been designed jointly with hospital personnel involved in every day operations on blood bags and tubes in order to improve processes, in terms of safety and reliability. The testing protocol has been applied to 3 inlays, 2 fixed readers, 1 mobile handheld in 3 logistics processes, all operating according to UHF EPC class 1 gen 2 protocols and ETSI regulations. We measured and compared read rates, accuracies and read times. FINDINGS: The results of the test give a direct insight of performances to be expected from different RFID devices when deployed in a real-world environment. Therefore, it is possible to give answers to how a specific piece of hardware - such as an inlay or a reader - performs, and how it can be effectively used to improve security of patients in healthcare. At the same time, researchers focusing on the business process reengineering of blood supply chain can assess the technical feasibility of the RFID-reengineered logistics processes in order to improve the safety of end users

Free Vibration Analysis of Functionally Graded Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Composite Plates with Arbitrary Domains and Discontinuities

    No full text
Composite plates are structural elements that are commonly used in many fields, such as civil, aerospace and mechanical engineering. The mechanical response of these structures has been enhanced by the advancements in the manufacturing processes that characterized the last decades. In particular, the attention of both the academic research and the industry improvement is focused on the development of new classes of materials that can reasonably increase the structural performances. For these purposes, the class of granular composites defined by a gradual variation of the mechanical properties along the thickness of the structures has been developed. In the literature, they are typically named as Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). The idea on which these composites are based on is also employed to specify the spatial variation of an extremely innovative reinforcing phase made of carbon nanofibers, known as Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs). It has been proven that the insertion of these particles in a polymeric matrix can drastically change the structural response of many structural elements. Since their discovery in the nineties, CNTs have revolutionized the classical idea of composite structures. The term “nanostructure” has been introduced to refer to these structural elements

Gli archivi di persona nell'era digitale. Il caso dell'archivio di Massimo Vannucci

    No full text
