Mechanics of Arbitrarily Shaped Composite Structures Using Isogeometric Mapping
Recently it has been proven that differential quadrature can be applied to arbitrarily shaped structures through mapping technique. This general approach has been termed by the authors Strong Formulation Finite Element Method (SFEM) in contrast with standard weak formbased element methods. The most common approach uses serendipity Lagrangian functions such as the ones used in Finite Element (FE) analysis. Due to its higher order accuracy, the main advantage of differential quadrature within domain decomposition is that the domains can be larger. Thus, serendipity elements are not always suitable to map element edges of general shape. For this reason, the authors employ blending functions to map a general shape element in the computational space. For the sake of generality, the blending functions are not defined case by case, but they are descripted using Non Uniform Rational Basis-Splines (NURBS). The use of NURBS, which are the most common tool used in CAD design, reduces the error carried out through mapping from a general shape domain into a regular one. Therefore, the authors merged the versatility of differential quadrature for studying engineering problems in strong formulation, such as the mechanics of composite structures and the major advantage of nonlinear mapping using NURBS, locating the present approach in the framework of isogeometric analysis. The convergence, reliability and stability of the SFEM is demonstrated through several practical applications mainly related to composite structures
Linear and Nonlinear Dynamic Response of Piles in Soft Marine Clay
This paper presents the results of free vibration tests carried out at different load levels on a system of three near-shore steel pipe
piles vibro-driven into soft marine clay. Piles are arranged in an L-shaped horizontal layout and are free at the head. The instrumentation
consists of strain gauges placed at selected levels along the shaft of the loaded pile and accelerometers at the head of the receiver piles. The
aim of this experiment is to analyze the dynamic soil–water–pile and pile-to-pile interaction and to investigate the development of nonlinearities
at increasing load levels. The results of experimental modal analyses, in terms of natural frequencies and damping ratios of
the system, are presented and the complex dynamic behavior of the vibrating soil–water–pile system and the pile-to-pile interaction are
discussed. For a better reliability assessment of the system response in the range of linear behavior, the results of free vibration tests at
the lowest level of the applied loads are compared with those obtained from impact load tests
Dynamic Characterization of Open-ended Pipe Piles in Marine Environment
This chapter is focused on the experimental investigations that can be carried out to dynamically characterize open-ended pipe piles in marine environment. Different test typologies, such as impact load test, free vibration test, forced vibration test, and ambient vibration test, are presented and described with the purpose to provide the right tools to analyze the dynamic behavior, at both small and large strains, of single piles or a system of piles. The appropriate instrumentation, with the suitable protection from marine environment and pile driving installation procedure, is also illustrated. Furthermore, the most common signal processing techniques useful for handling the experimental raw data are addressed together with the analysis techniques for the evaluation of the modal parameters: natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes. Finally, a part of the experimental campaign carried out by the authors on near-shore open-ended pipe piles is reported as a case study
Tests campaign analysis to evaluate the capability of fragmentation test to characterize recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) material
Cold and hot recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is increasingly gaining in popularity worldwide due to the need to increase the sus- tainability of asphalt pavement, both from environmental and economic perspec- tives. Despite the increasing of use of these techniques, we are still faced with the problem of correctly characterizing RAP. In the framework of the RILEM TC 237-SIB TG6, a Round Robin Test (RRT) was performed in order to evaluate the capacity of the fragmentation test to characterize RAP materials. A total of 5 laboratories located in 4 different countries were involved in the testing program. This paper focuses on the presentation of the fragmentation test method and the results of the RRT performed on different sources of RAP. To differentiate RAP materials in terms of size alteration vulnerability, fragmentation tests were per- formed at three different temperatures (5, 20 and 40 °C) on different sources of RAP. Fragmentation testing consists in evaluating the amount of materials passing through a control sieve of a coarse uniform RAP material after a fixed series of strokes carried out with a normalized falling mass. Results show that fragmentation is reduced when the testing temperature increases. Fragmentation tests performed on natural aggregates indicate that they do not vary with the testing temperature, and such test results are a function of the amount of foreign matter in the RAP. The results also show that the test is suitable for differentiating RAP materials from different sources
Strategic fit of the Italian supply chains: An experimental Study
Almost 20 years ago, Marshall L. Fisher asked on the Harvard Business Review "What is the right supply chain for your product?" To search for an answer, he proposed a matrix to understand if the nature of a company's products and the priority of its supply chain match or not. The aim of this work is to determine quantitatively the level of strategic fit of Italian companies from different sectors (e.g. automotive, rubber and plastics, fashion and apparel and machineries and equipment). To achieve our goal, we built a multiple-choice questionnaire with 11 questions on a company's supply chain and 9 questions on its products, to determine products characteristics and supply chain priorities. Also, the questionnaire is provided with some general questions to describe the characteristics of the company. The questionnaire was sent to around 2,000 companies, and we received 172 answers. Firstly, we built the Fisher matrix, and found out that around 61% of companies resulted to match supply chain priorities with product's characteristics. Around 27% of companies, instead, presented a responsive supply chain with functional products, and another 12% of companies have an efficient supply chain with innovative products: both these solutions present criticalities. Finally, we investigated the degree of coherence of the different sectors, and this produces interesting suggestions, both for researchers and practitioners
