    Stability and accuracy of three Fourier expansion-based strong form finite elements for the free vibration analysis of laminated composite plates

    In the present paper, strong form finite elements are employed for the free vibration study of laminated arbitrarily shaped plates. In particular, the stability and accuracy of three different Fourier expansion-based differential quadrature techniques are shown. These techniques are used to solve the partial differential system of equations inside each computational element. The three approaches are called harmonic differential quadrature, Fourier differential quadrature and improved Fourier expansion-based differential quadrature methods. The improved Fourier expansion-based differential quadrature method implements auxiliary functions in order to approximate functional derivatives up to the fourth order, with respect to the Fourier differential quadrature method that has a basis made of sines and cosines. All the present applications are related to literature comparisons and the presentation of new results for further investigation within the same topic. A study of such kind has never been proposed in the literature, and it could be useful as a reference for future investigation in this matter

    Numerical Investigation of Composite Materials with Inclusions and Discontinuities

    The present study aims to show a novel numerical approach for investigating composite structures wherein inclusions and discontinuities are present. This numerical approach, termed Strong Formulation Finite Element Method (SFEM), implements a domain decomposition technique in which the governing partial differential system of equations is solved in a strong form. The provided numerical solutions are compared with the ones of the classic Finite Element Method (FEM). It is pointed out that the stress and strain components of the investigated model can be computed more accurately and with less degrees of freedom with respect to standard weak form procedures. The SFEM lies within the general framework of the so-called pseudo-spectral or collocation methods. The Differential Quadrature (DQ) method is one specific application of the previously cited ones and it is applied for discretizing all the partial differential equations that govern the physical problem. The main drawback of the DQ method is that it cannot be applied to irregular domains. In converting the differential problem into a system of algebraic equations, the derivative calculation is direct so that the problem can be solved in its strong form. However, such problem can be overcome by introducing a mapping transformation to convert the equations in the physical coordinate system into a computational space. It is important to note that the assemblage among the elements is given by compatibility conditions, which enforce the connection with displacements and stresses along the boundary edges. Several computational aspects and numerical applications will be presented for the aforementioned problems related to composite materials with discontinuities and inclusions

    A new framework for RFID use cases in fashion and apparel retailing

    OBJECTIVE: This paper aims at proposing a new framework for the classification of RFID deployments in fashion and apparel retailing. The framework encompasses several different use cases (UCs) pursued by fashion and apparel retailers in the last decade, and updates, expands and goes beyond what has already been presented in the related literature. DESIGN, METHODOLOGY, APPROACH: We carried out a comprehensive literature review on RFID deployments in fashion and apparel retail. We searched different sources of information, that is, scientific papers, conferences and seminars proceedings, websites, magazines, newspapers etc., up to 160 papers that were carefully analysed and organised in a structured database. This data set also comprehends information from confidential projects. We analyse contents on the level of single RFID projects, that is, feasibility studies, proofs of concept, pilots or deployments. For each project, we determine what specific UCs were at stake. Eventually, the framework of all possible RFID UCs emerged from the analysis, and we set up a panel of industry partners to validate the framework using the Delphi method. FINDINGS: We structured the new framework along two levels: first, 6 categories were identified (i.e., level 1 use cases). Each category was then detailed, resulting in a total of 18 specific UCs (i.e., level 2 use cases). Each level 2 UC corresponds to a very specific objective pursued by an RFID implementation. For each UC, we propose a set of business metrics to evaluate deployment success as well as benefits achieved. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: From a practitioner's perspective, the framework offers a comprehensive and well-structured overview of the cost- and the revenue-related potentials of RFID implementations in the industry. Researchers, on the other hand, may use the framework to identify opportunities for further research regarding RFID deployments in retailing. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: Our framework is based on the current body of literature, and complements prior studies, which served as the starting point for our research

    Nota introduttiva al volume che descrive il primo caso italiano di intervento d’inventariazione e riordinamento su un archivio «ibrido», con documenti sia cartacei che digitali: quello di Massimo Vannucci (1957-2012), politico e imprenditore, deputato Ds dal 2006 al 2008 e successivamente riconfermato nelle liste del Pd. La documentazione risale prevalentemente al periodo compreso fra il 2005 e il 2012, quindi all’epoca dell’attività politica di Vannucci, ed è proprio la natura ibrida dei materiali a determinare l’originalità dell’intervento. E-mail archiviate sia nel client di posta che sulla webmail e altri documenti rinvenuti nel computer si aggiungono alla documentazione cartacea, costituendo a tutti gli effetti un archivio digitale di persona. Oltre a illustrare l’intervento svolto, il libro si pone l’obiettivo di aprire una riflessione sulle questioni connesse al riordino e alla conservazione degli archivi digitali di persona: tematiche di importanza fondamentale se si pensa che gli archivi, non soltanto di persona, diventeranno totalmente digitali nel giro di poco tempo, dato che i trend evolutivi degli ultimi anni hanno registrato una fortissima accelerazione in tale direzione. È urgente, quindi, aprirsi al confronto su queste tematiche e individuare soluzioni che permettano di conservare per il futuro gli archivi digitali che si stanno oggi formando

    La L.107/2015 affronta il tema della formazione iniziale degli insegnanti di scuola secondaria in termini radicalmente innovativi. Il nuovo percorso è descritto alla lettera b) del comma 181, che definisce i criteri sulla base dei quali il governo viene delegato a emanare un decreto che disponga concretamente il nuovo assetto formativo. Tali criteri sono esposti in modo estremamente dettagliato, ma non per questo provo di contraddizioni e di difficoltà di traduzione operativa: questi elementi sono emersi con chiarezza all'interno della Commissione ministeriale alla quale è stato affidato il compito di istruire il decreto

    Higher-order structural theories for the static analysis of doubly-curved laminated composite panels reinforced by curvilinear fibers

    The main aim of this paper is the evaluation of the through-the-thickness profiles of strain, stress and displacement components of several doubly-curved panels reinforced by curvilinear fibers. The placement of the reinforcing phase along curved paths allows to obtain mechanical properties which change point by point and affects the static behavior of shell structures. Some numerical applications based on both higher-order Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) and Layer-Wise (LW) theories are shown in order to underline the curvilinear fiber influence on the static analysis. The structural model, which is based on the so-called Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), is completely general and can deal easily with variable stiffness shells. An appropriate recovery procedure based on the three-dimensional elasticity equations in principal curvilinear coordinates is presented to compute strains and stresses. The equation system which governs the static problem under consideration is solved numerically through the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method. The same numerical technique is employed to evaluate the geometrical parameters needed for the characterization of the shell reference surface, according to the differential geometry

    Improvement of mouth functional disability in systemic sclerosis patients over one year in a trial of fat transplantation versus adipose-derived stromal cells

    Background. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem disease characterized by cutaneous and visceral fibrosis. Face and mouth changes include telangiectasia, sicca syndrome, and thinning and reduction of mouth width (microcheilia) and opening (microstomia). We applied autologous fat transplantation compared with autologous adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) injection to evaluate the clinical improvement of mouth opening. Methods. From February to May 2013 ten consecutive SSc patients were enrolled from the outpatient clinic of Plastic Surgery Department of Sapienza University of Rome. Patients were divided into two groups as follows: 5 patients were treated with fat transplantation and 5 patients received infiltration of ADSCs produced by cell factory of our institution. To value mouth opening, we use the Italian version of Mouth Handicap in Systemic Sclerosis Scale (IvMHISS). Mouth opening was assessed in centimetres (Maximal Mouth Opening, MMO). In order to evaluate compliance and physician and patient satisfaction, we employed a Questionnaire of Satisfaction and the Visual Analogic Scale (VAS) performed before starting study and 1 year after the last treatment. Results and Conclusion. We noticed that both procedures obtained significant results but neither one emerged as a first-choice technique. The present clinical experimentation should be regarded as a starting point for further experimental research and clinical trials
