    An analytic model to investigate the demand propagation in EOI supply networks

    This paper builds upon the study by Montanari et al. (2015). These authors presented a probabilistic approach, named M.DPA.eoq, to predict the demand seen by an upper-tier echelon (e.g., a distribution centre) of a supply network, serving several lower-tier echelons (e.g., retail stores) operating according to an economic order quantity (EOQ) policy. In this paper, we investigate the case of the economic order interval (EOI) policy and thus formulate the Montanari demand probabilistic approach in the EOI scenario (M.DPA.eoi) framework. Although its analytic formulation is not so simple, the M.DPA.eoi is quite easy to understand and can be implemented without difficulties in general-purpose software, such as Microsoft ExcelTM. Therefore, it is expected to be directly exploited by supply network managers, to estimate the distribution of the demand the upper-tier echelon will face in a defined network structure. The model is tested on four scenarios, with different network structures and different behaviours of the lower-tier echelons

    Effects of NSAIDs on the Release of Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide and Prostaglandin E2from Rat Trigeminal Ganglia

    : Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used to treat migraine, but the mechanisms of their effects in this pathology are not fully elucidated. The trigeminal ganglia and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) have been implicated in the pathophysiology of migraine. The release of CGRP and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) from freshly isolated rat trigeminal ganglia was evaluated after oral administration of nimesulide, etoricoxib, and ketoprofen, NSAIDs with different pharmacological features. Thirty minutes after oral administration, nimesulide, 10 mg/Kg, decreased the GCRP release induced by an inflammatory soup, while the other NSAIDs were ineffective at this point in time. Two hours after oral nimesulide (5 and 10 mg/Kg) and ketoprofen (10 mg/Kg), but not of etoricoxib, a significant decrease in the CGRP release was observed. All drugs reduced PGE2, although with some differences in timing and doses, and the action on CGRP does not seem to be related to PGE2 inhibition. The reduction of CGRP release from rat trigeminal ganglia after nimesulide and ketoprofen may help to explain the mechanism of action of NSAIDs in migraine. Since at 30 minutes only nimesulide was effective in reducing CGRP release, these results suggest that this NSAID may exert a particularly rapid effect in patients with migraine

    A new doubly-curved shell element for the free vibrations of arbitrarily shaped laminated structures based on Weak Formulation IsoGeometric Analysis

    The main aim of the paper is to present a new numerical method to solve the weak formulation of the governing equations for the free vibrations of laminated composite shell structures with variable radii of curvature. For this purpose, the integral form of the stiffness matrix is computed numerically by means of the Generalized Integral Quadrature (GIQ) method. A two-dimensional structural model is introduced to analyze the mechanical behavior of doubly-curved shells. The displacement field is described according to the basic aspects of the general Higher-order Shear Deformation Theories (HSDTs), which allow to define several kinematic models as a function of the free parameter that stands for the order of expansion. Since an Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) approach is considered, the generalized displacements evaluated on the shell middle surface represent the unknown variables of the problem, which are approximated by using the Lagrange interpolating polynomials. The mechanical behavior of the structures is modeled through only one element that includes the double curvature in its formulation, which is transformed into a distorted domain by means of a mapping procedure based on the use of NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) curves, following the fundamentals of the well-known Isogeometric Analysis (IGA). For these reasons, the presented methodology is named Weak Formulation Isogeometric Analysis (WFIGA) in order to distinguish it from the corresponding approach based on the strong form of the governing equations (Strong Formulation Isogeometric Analysis or SFIGA), previously introduced by the authors. Several numerical applications are performed to test the current method. The results are validated for different boundary conditions and various lamination schemes through the comparison with the solutions available in the literature or obtained by a finite element commercial software

    Performance and Exchange Knowledge in film co-productions: learning from the documentary Michel Petrucciani

    Since WWII international co-production have become an increasingly important mode for producing feature films. Thus, a large corpus of critical literature in various disciplines, from cinema and media studies to sociology to cultural economics, have focused on co-productions in the movie industry, with projects that investigated the cultural influences, the economic implications, and the performances of film co-productions. However, very little has been written on the exchange of technical and commercial knowledge between the co-production partners. Drawing on the theoretical framework of transnational media studies and on the economic concept of Knowledge Exchange (KE), this paper aims to analyze the performance and the exchange knowledge in the context of Italian-European co-productions, through the qualitative methodology of the case study. The findings of this study can offer a better understanding of the co-production phenomenon

    Mechanical Behavior of Laminated Composite Shells with Arbitrary Domains: Comparison Between Weak and Strong Formulations

    Several applications in many engineering fields need particular structural elements characterized by arbitrary and distorted geometries. Therefore, accurate and reliable tools must be developed to deal with these problems. In fact, it is well-known that the description of arbitrarily shaped geometries represents a challenging issue of the applied mechanics. These difficulties are even more evident if a laminated composite doubly-curved shell is considered [1, 2]. The main purpose of this research is to present a valid numerical tool to analyze the mechanical behavior of these structures. In particular, the differential geometry is used to evaluate the geometric parameters of the shells. Then, a mapping procedure based on the application of NURBS is introduced to describe distorted domains, following the framework of the Isogeometric Analysis (IGA). An enriched displacement field is employed to take into account several Higher-order Shear Deformation Theories (HSDTs) in a unified manner to have a more accurate analysis of the structural behavior. The governing equations are obtained through the Hamilton’s principle for both the strong and weak formulations. The governing differential equations are changed into a system of discrete equations if the strong formulation is considered, whereas an integral statement is introduced for the weak form. The results of the analyses are carried out by means of the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method and the Generalized Integral Quadrature (GIQ) technique [3], respectively. The acronyms SF-IGA (Strong Formulation Isogeometric Analysis) and WF-IGA (Weak Formulation Isogeometric Analysis) are introduced to define such techniques. Several examples and applications are presented to prove the accuracy and reliability of these approaches in dealing with different geometries, lamination schemes, and boundary conditions. The validity of the current methodology is tested by the comparison with the results available in the literature or obtained through three-dimensional finite element models

    Testing and deploying an RFID-based real-time locating system at a fashion retailer: A case study

    In this paper, the testing and deployment of an RFID-based Real-Time Locating System (RTLS) at a fashion retailer is presented. An RTLS is a combination of hardware and software systems to determine automatically and in real-time the coordinates of an object. Although this goal might be achieved with different technologies, several studies suggest the centrality of RFID as a locating system technology. Nonetheless, the literature presents a lack of studies that investigate on real applications of RTLS in retailing. To fill this gap, our study reports the testing and deploying phases of an RFID RTLS at the Diffusione Tessile store in Pomezia, Rome (Italy). The selected store is, at present, the biggest of the whole firm in terms of number of garments exposed. During a recent refurbishment of the store, the company installed a RTLS composed of 254 antennas linked through multiplexers to 13 readers. The RTLS was designed after an extensive lab-testing phase, and it is provided with two different algorithms for locating garments on the sales floor area. A first installation of the system was finished in early 2015, but this first implementation resulted in some discrepancies amongst different antennas and some corrections were made. In autumn 2015, the system was then tested for the first time in the field: the results of all the testing phase are reported in the paper. This case study sparks interest and suggests several ideas for a deployment of RTLS in a fashion store. Also, and maybe more important, the points of strength and weakness of our implementation could help practitioners and researchers to maximise the benefits of future RTLS implementations in the fashion industry and discover new prospective research topics within this sector
