    SACHER: Smart Architecture for Cultural Heritage in Emilia Romagna

    The current Cultural Heritage management system lacks of ICT platforms for the management and integration of heterogeneous and fragmented data sources and interconnection between private and public subjects involved in the process. The SACHER project intends to fill this gap, working both on a technological level and on a business model level: firstly providing a platform based on an open-source distributed cloud-computing environment for the management of the complete data lifecycle related to cultural assets; moreover providing new models based on participatory design for Cultural Heritage data directed towards social entrepreneurship. This paper presents the first implementation of a system for managing data based on the 3D model of the cultural object, with a focus on the process for cultural assets management and the interface design for cultural services

    Ruolo delle suture imbevute di antisettico nel ridurre l’incidenza delle infezioni del sito chirurgico

    Nonostante la somministrazione della pro lassi antibiotica, l’infezione del sito chirurgico (surgical site infections, SSis) occupa il terzo posto tra le infezioni nosocomiali negli Stati Uniti. Dal 2002 negli USA, l’FDA ha approvato l’utilizzo di suture impregnate di una sostanza antisettica, Studi in vitro hanno dimostrato la sua azione antibatterica e vari trials clinici in vivo hanno descritto ampiamente il razionale di utilizzo di questo tipo di sutura, allo scopo di ridurre il tasso di incidenza delle SSIs. Più recentemente sono stati pubblicati articoli scientifici in vitro che testano l’efficacia della sutura con antisettico a base di clorexidina con dati incoraggianti. Tuttavia mancano degli studi in vivo che comparino tali suture con quelle standard. È auspicabile che ulteriori studi precisino meglio il ruolo delle suture con antisettico, inserendole in linee guida condivise

    A posteriori stress and strain recovery procedure for the static analysis of laminated shells resting on nonlinear elastic foundation

    The numerical analysis of laminated composite plates and shells resting on nonlinear elastic foundation is the main topic of the paper. The generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) technique and the Newton-Raphson iteration are employed to obtain the solution of the static problems under consideration. The nonlinear elastic foundation is modeled using the Winkler-Pasternak model embedded with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities in order to a have a more complete description of the interaction. The structural behavior is modeled by means of higher-order displacement fields developed in the framework of a unified formulation. Several lamination schemes are studied. The class of sandwich structures with an inner soft-core is also taken into account with the help of the Murakami's function, which correctly captures the so-called zig-zag effect. The presented approach can deal with doubly-curved surfaces characterized by two radii of curvature that can vary in each point of the reference domain, whereas most of the examples available in the literature considers only shells with constant curvature, such as spherical and cylindrical shells. Solutions are presented in terms of through-the-thickness variations of strains, stresses, and displacements. For these purposes, a posteriori recovery procedure based on the GDQ method is introduced. The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed approach are proven by means of the comparison with the numerical results obtained by a three-dimensional finite element model

    A model for the analysis of procurement strategies in the economic order interval environment

    The paper analyzes two different procurement strategies, i.e. single sourcing and double sourcing, for a buyer that adopts the economic order interval (EOI) reorder policy. The analysis consists of two steps. We start by developing a simulation model, which reproduces the two procurement strategies. In the single sourcing scenario, the buyer exploits only one supplier for purchasing. This supplier owns a defined level of reliability, i.e. a given capacity of providing the product when requested. In the case of double sourcing, besides the first supplier, the buyer can exploit a second vendor, which is always able to deliver the product required (reliability=100%); however, it sells its product at a higher price, generating higher cost. The simulation model, built on Microsoft ExcelView the MathML source, allows deriving the total cost of the system under the two scenarios, thus helping the buyer select the most suitable (i.e. minimum cost) purchasing strategy. As a second step, for the double sourcing scenario, the analytic formulae of the total cost as a function of the supplier’s reliability are derived and a sensitivity analysis is carried out to investigate how the total cost changes as a function of the input parameters. This paper expressively links the strategic decision of single sourcing vs. double sourcing to a specific reorder policy, such as EOI, which is very often implemented in real cases but not so widely investigated in literature. The proposed approach is thus expected to be of interest under both a practical perspective and a scientific one

    Linear Static Behavior of Damaged Laminated Composite Plates and Shells

    A mathematical scheme is proposed here to model a damaged mechanical configuration for laminated and sandwich structures. In particular, two kinds of functions defined in the reference domain of plates and shells are introduced to weaken their mechanical properties in terms of engineering constants: a two-dimensional Gaussian function and an ellipse shaped function. By varying the geometric parameters of these distributions, several damaged configurations are analyzed and investigated through a set of parametric studies. The effect of a progressive damage is studied in terms of displacement profiles and through-the-thickness variations of stress, strain, and displacement components. To this end, a posteriori recovery procedure based on the three-dimensional equilibrium equations for shell structures in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates is introduced. The theoretical framework for the two-dimensional shell model is based on a unified formulation able to study and compare several Higher-order Shear Deformation Theories (HSDTs), including Murakami’s function for the so-called zig-zag effect. Thus, various higher-order models are used and compared also to investigate the differences which can arise from the choice of the order of the kinematic expansion. Their ability to deal with several damaged configurations is analyzed as well. The paper can be placed also in the field of numerical analysis, since the solution to the static problem at issue is achieved by means of the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method, whose accuracy and stability are proven by a set of convergence analyses and by the comparison with the results obtained through a commercial finite element software

    Il 4 ottobre 1957 lo Sputnik 1, il primo oggetto lanciato da un uomo oltre l’atmosfera, compie un’orbita attorno alla terra. Un mese più tardi, il 3 novembre, è la volta di Sputnik 2, con a bordo la cagnetta Laika. Le date scelte per quelle imprese non avevano nulla di casuale ma intendevano celebrare il quarantesimo anniversario della Rivoluzione di Ottobre, allorché l’insurrezione del 7-8 novembre 1917 aveva condotto alla formazione del primo stato comunista. Sul piano propagandistico quei risultati vennero esibiti non solo come ideale prosecuzione e completamento della Rivoluzione avviata da Lenin, ma come dimostrazione che il socialismo reale poteva vantare primati che il mondo occidentale non aveva ancora raggiunto

    Mechanical Behavior of Damaged Laminated Composites Plates and Shells: Higher-Order Shear Deformation Theories

    A higher-order structural model based on a Unified Formulation is employed to investigate the mechanical behavior of laminated composite plates and shells with variable elastic properties. The variability in hand is obtained by means of peculiar mathematical laws that allow to describe linear, sine-wave, and exponential variations of the mechanical properties. In addition, two-dimensional functions are also introduced to define more complex variations. For instance, by choosing the Gaussian function is possible to model a damage that can affect a shell structure. In fact, a generic damage within the reference domain can be modeled by setting properly the parameters of the distribution at issue and imposing an abrupt deterioration of the engineering elastic constants. In particular, the size and intensity damage effects on the structural response are investigated through a set of parametric analyses. Similar considerations can be extended to the case of an ellipse shaped function introduced for the same purpose. Since a numerical analysis is performed, the governing equations are solved by the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method due to its accuracy and stability features. The same numerical approach is used to evaluate the geometric properties of the doubly-curved surfaces in hand, which denote the reference domains. In addition, it should be specified that the differential geometry provides all the analytical definitions for an accurate description of these shells with variable radii of curvature

    Nel corso del Novecento, numerosi eventi bellici, incluse le guerre civili, il mutamento degli assetti geopolitici, le persecuzioni riconducibili a ragioni religiose, politiche e sociali, hanno determinato le migrazioni forzate di milioni di individui. Ma solamente negli ultimi decenni, a partire dagli spostamenti di popolazione avvenuti in seguito alla conclusione della guerra fredda, la storiografia europea ha sviluppato un’attenzione adeguata a fenomeni così importanti nell’età contemporanea. Inserendosi all’interno di questa stagione storiografica, che ha conosciuto un nuovo impulso sotto la pressione del progressivo aumento del numero di individui in fuga da alcuni paesi dell’Africa e del Medio Oriente, i saggi presentati nel volume intendono affrontare il caso italiano mettendo in campo uno sguardo complessivo in grado di includere i movimenti migratori forzati che hanno riguardato i cittadini italiani, all’interno e all’esterno dei confini nazionali, ma anche i movimenti imposti dalle autorità nazionali italiane al di fuori della penisola, fino a giungere al caso dei profughi e rifugiati presenti in Italia nel secondo dopoguerra e di coloro che, nell’ultimo decennio del Novecento, hanno abbandonato la penisola balcanica e si sono portati nel nostro paese
