    First-order shear deformation theory for orthotropic doubly-curved shells based on a modified couple stress elasticity

    This paper investigates the micro- and nano-mechanical behavior of orthotropic doubly-curved shells by considering the New Modified Couple Stress Theory (NMCST). The higher order continuum assumed by the NMCST includes three material length scale parameters in order to capture the size-effect of anisotropic and orthotropic materials. The governing equations of the problem are based on the First-order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT). According to the proposed NMCST, the expressions of the physical components for the strain and curvature tensors are obtained in an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. Then, the governing differential equations and boundary conditions are derived by applying the energy method and Hamilton's principle. A comparative investigation between our numerical results and the ones available in the literature proves the capability of the proposed formulation in predicting the micro- and nano-mechanical behavior of orthotropic doubly-curved shells

    The presence of ectopic or supernumerary breast tissue is a rare event, related to a not complete regression of breast tissue along the milk line. Primary ectopic breast cancer of the axilla can create many difficulties in differential diagnosis with subsequent delayed specific treatments. The incidence of ectopic breast tissue is 0.2-6%, and the axilla is the most common site involved. In this tissue, the same physiologic and pathologic changes as seen in ectopic breast tissue may occur, including carcinoma formation

    Questo lavoro intende investigare gli effetti dell’asincronismo del moto sismico indotto da effetti di sito e dal comportamento non lineare del terreno sulla risposta sismica di lunghi viadotti multicampata con fondazioni su pali. In particolare, è stato esaminato un caso studio rappresentato da un viadotto fondato in un deposito di argilla tenera su substrato roccioso rigido, caratterizzato da una morfologia a cuneo. Il moto di riferimento su bedrock affiorante è costituito da un set di accelerogrammi reali e l’analisi di risposta sismica è stata effettuata con diversi metodi di analisi. Nelle analisi si è inoltre tenuto conto dell’interazione terreno-fondazione-struttura, utilizzando il metodo delle sottostrutture: in particolare l’analisi di interazione cinematica è stata formulata nel dominio delle frequenze, e sono poi stati utilizzati appropriati modelli a parametri concentrati per riprodurre il comportamento dipendente dalla frequenza del sistema terreno-fondazione nelle analisi non lineari di interazione inerziale della sovrastruttura. I risultati delle analisi, eseguite considerando sia moto sincrono che asincrono, hanno messo in luce la rilevanza della configurazione del deposito, del comportamento non lineare del terreno e dell’interazione terrenofondazione-struttura sulla risposta sismica di viadotti fondati su pali.This paper focuses on the effects of the non-synchronism of ground motion induced by local site conditions and soil non linearity on the seismic response of long multi-span bridges with pile foundations. A case study is investigated, represented by a pile-supported viaduct founded in a soft clay deposit overlaying a stiff bedrock. Different morphologies of the bedrock are considered to account for different scenarios of non-synchronous ground motions. The reference input motion at the outcropping bedrock consists of a set of real accelerograms and a 2D non-linear seismic response model is used to compute site amplification effects, for all the deposit configuration investigated. Soil-structure interaction is also considered in the analyses, by exploiting the domain decomposition technique: in particular, the kinematic interaction problem is formulated in the frequency domain and lumped parameter models are adopted to reproduce the frequency-dependent behaviour of the soil-foundation system in the non-linear inertial interaction analysis of the superstructure. The results of synchronous and non-synchronous ground motion, compared in terms of structural demand parameters and stresses on the deck, shed light on the significance of deposit configuration, soil behaviour and SSI on the structural response of long multi-span bridges

    Proposing a Value-Added Indicators framework for the apparel and fashion sector: Design and empirical evaluation

    Objective: Automatic identification technologies have become omnipresent in the retail industry. The introduction of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in the fashion and apparel industry has led to massive data sets which are currently an untapped source for decision makers. We therefore aim to leverage the economic potential of RFID by proposing a framework for novel RFID-enabled indicators. We use the term Value-Added Indicators (VAIs), instead of the common acronym KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), because the proposed metrics aim to add additional value to the existing management reporting with regard to the fashion and apparel supply chain. Design, Methodology, Approach: We combine two sources of knowledge in order to build a comprehensive framework. We (i) use the theoretical background from a review of the relevant literature and (ii) use the experience from an RFID-system integrator and two fashion companies that have already deployed RFID on a large scale. The framework is then validated in several iterations by academics and practitioners. Findings: The study has produced a set of 60 different VAIs that use, or might use, RFID technology to produce, monitor and increase the overall value of the fashion and apparel supply chain. These VAIs are organised in a structured framework, built and validated by more than 10 experts from the field. The framework was then further validated by 24 experts, comprehending managers and researchers from outside the borders of the EU-Project SERAMIS. Practical Implications: Practitioners from the fashion and apparel industry benefit from our research by having available a validated framework with a set of 60 different VAIs that can be readily implemented into their own management reporting. The framework can thus serve as the foundation for building up an RFID-based measurement system or as a guideline for extending an existing measurement system. Originality/Value: We are the first who structure RFID-related performance indicators in a validated framework. Our framework can serve as a foundation for further research that goes beyond the fashion and apparel retail industry. We encourage researcher to build upon our research and to transfer it to different industries

    Gabapentin Inhibits Protein Kinase C Epsilon Translocation in Cultured Sensory Neurons with Additive Effects When Coapplied with Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)

    : Gabapentin is a well-established anticonvulsant drug which is also effective for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Although the exact mechanism leading to relief of allodynia and hyperalgesia caused by neuropathy is not known, the blocking effect of gabapentin on voltage-dependent calcium channels has been proposed to be involved. In order to further evaluate its analgesic mechanisms, we tested the efficacy of gabapentin on protein kinase C epsilon (PKCε) translocation in cultured peripheral neurons isolated from rat dorsal root ganglia (DRGs). We found that gabapentin significantly reduced PKCε translocation induced by the pronociceptive peptides bradykinin and prokineticin 2, involved in both inflammatory and chronic pain. We recently showed that paracetamol (acetaminophen), a very commonly used analgesic drug, also produces inhibition of PKCε. We tested the effect of the combined use of paracetamol and gabapentin, and we found that the inhibition of translocation adds up. Our study provides a novel mechanism of action for gabapentin in sensory neurons and suggests a mechanism of action for the combined use of paracetamol and gabapentin, which has recently been shown to be effective, with a cumulative behavior, in the control of postoperative pain in human patients
