AN ANALYSIS OF THE REASONS AFFECTING THE EVOLUTION OF ACADEMIC SPIN-OFF FOUNDERS’ MOTIVATIONS
The paradigm of the Triple Helix emphasizes the role of universities in the modern knowledge-based economy (Eztkowitz, 2003). According to this paradigm, universities are moving from their traditional role of research, teaching, and knowledge dissemination to an entrepreneurial role (Hayter, 2011). Academic spin-offs (ASOs) are new firms or organizations founded by university researchers and/or technical staff aiming at commercializing ideas based on university discoveries and inventions (e.g. Bigliardi et al., 2013). Several studies show that to stimulate ASOs’ establishment it is of fundamental importance the first stage of an ASO’s life cycle, that is the “creation”. This phase largely depends on the needs and motivations of the individual founder, which plays a critical role in the subsequent business performance (Hayter, 2011). Through a review of the literature, we aim at investigating the motivational factors that lead an academic to establish a spin-off, and specifically to investigate if, how and why these motivations vary over time. Drawing on existing works, we want to outline the debate on academics’ entrepreneurial motivation

An adapted discrete firefly algorithm for routing order pickers in manual warehouses
Warehouse management is a vital logistics activity that can affect supply chain costs. Of all the warehouse processes, order picking is one of the most time consuming and expensive, mainly due to the travel time spent by the picker to collect the different items of a generic picking list. In line with this consideration, this paper shows the application of a metaheuristic algorithm for routing order pickers in manual warehouses and minimizing the total distance covered. The proposed approach is an adaptation of the Discrete Firefly Algorithm (DFA), a nature-inspired algorithm based on the flashing behaviour of fireflies. The algorithm, developed under Microsoft ExcelTM, is then tested on an assumptive warehouse by taking into account ten picking lists composed of ten items, small number allowing the exact solution to be identified by examining the whole set of possible combinations and, accordingly, be compared with DFA solutions. Furthermore, results are also compared with those obtained from different heuristic routing policies (traversal, return and largest gap), from a heuristic algorithm commonly used for the vehicle routing problem (i.e. the Clarke and Wright saving algorithm) and from a metaheuristic algorithm namely the Water Wave Optimization (WWO). The computational analysis demonstrates that the proposed algorithm is generally able to provide better results than the heuristic routing policies and the heuristic algorithm examined; moreover, the adapted DFA procedure is always able to identify the optimal solution for the problem investigated
An algorithm for the capacitated vehicle routing problem for picking application in manual warehouses
Given that warehouses play a central role in modern supply chains, this study proposes the application of an algorithm for the capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) based on the two-index vehicle flow formulation developed by Baldacci, Hadjiconstantinou, and Mingozzi (2004) for picking purposes in manual warehouses. The study of Theys et al. (2010) is first used to represent the warehouse using a Steiner traveling salesman problem (TSP). Then, a calculation of the picking tour's length is obtained applying the Manhattan distance. Finally, the algorithm for the CVRP is solved through a cutting plane with the addition of termination criteria related to the capacity of picker. The study analyzes four different warehouse configurations, processing five picking list each. The analysis is carried out exploiting the commercial software MATLAB®, to determine the solution that minimize distance of the order picking tour. The results obtained in MATLAB® show the effectiveness of the chosen algorithm applied to the context of manual order picking
UV irradiation as a comparable method to thermal treatment for producing high quality stabilized milk whey
Whey is a valuable by-product of the dairy industry, due to the high nutritional, biochemical and functional properties of the contained proteins. As for other dairy products, to guarantee the microbiological safety of whey, thermal treatments are generally used. However, these processes can have a significant impact on the quality of the product. Thus, in recent years, interest in the use of non-thermal treatments in the dairy industry is significantly grown. In the present work, the use of UV irradiation as stabilizing treatment has been investigated on whey obtained from the Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese production. Two treatments were tested: UV treatment “1” which is characterized by three passages and UV treatment “2” by six ones. On skimmed whey samples, microbiological tests showed UV treatment 2 and the thermal treatment have the same effectiveness on Enterobacteriaceae, but UV treatment 2 is more effective than thermal treatment on total viable counts. Molecular characterization of the protein and total amino acid content was used as markers for the quality of the product. The results highlight that UV treatment can be equivalent to thermal pasteurization in terms of microbiological stabilization, and better preserving the whey quality
