Updating Values: Perspectives on Design Education
Updating Values. Perspectives on Design Education includes the proceedings of the International Symposium Updating Values – FutureDesignEd 2020 held in San Marino on January 16-17, 2020 and curated by Alessandra Bosco, Elena Formia, Silvia Gasparotto, Gianni Sinni. FutureDesignEd is an academic research project promoted by the University of Bologna Design Programmes, the aim of which is to observe the ongoing transformation of design education through the involvement of a community of international observers. The volume aims to further the discourse on “educational values” in the field of design. From Piero Formica’s “creative ignorance” to Alice Twemlow’s reflection upon the “human, post-human, and more-than-human”, from Audrey G. Bennett’s educational model to Juan Salamanca’s framework of responsible innovation, a plurality of different viewpoints emerges. All of them converged in the Manifesto of Updating Values – FutureDesignEd 2020, which identifies twelve values we believe are the core of design and design education, the cornerstones of a lifelong process of learning and personal and professional growth: aware of the past, open to the future, and engaged with the worl
Linear eigenvalue analysis of laminated thin plates including the strain gradient effect by means of conforming and nonconforming rectangular finite elements
The paper presents a finite element method to investigate the critical buckling loads and the natural frequencies of laminated Kirchhoff plates including the nonlocal strain gradient effect, which could have considerably consequences at the nanoscale. With respect to the existing literature, the proposed numerical methodology is developed to deal with general stacking sequences of orthotropic layers with arbitrary orientations and various boundary conditions. The resulting membrane-bending coupling is emphasized in the formulation, which requires to study the whole set of partial differential equations. The membrane and bending degrees of freedom are all approximated by means of Hermite interpolating functions with higher-order continuity requirements. To this aim, regular rectangular finite elements based on conforming (C) and nonconforming (NC) approaches are used. A wide validation procedure is carried out to prove the effectiveness of the proposed formulation. A set of new results is presented for general mechanical configurations with arbitrary restraints
Early numerical skills in individuals with Down Syndrome
The aim of the present work was to explore early mathematical
competences in individuals with Down Syndrome (DS). Intellectual
Disability has been identified as one of the most important features in
this population. The behavioral phenotype of individuals with DS is
characterized by deficits in cognitive functions and learning abilities. A
numerical battery was administered to a group of 11 individuals with DS
and 11 Typically Developed (TD) children matched for mental age, as
assessed with the Logical Operations Test. The findings revealed that
early numerical skills of individuals with DS were well aligned to mental
age: the two groups presented similar competences in counting, in mental
calculation and cardinality. Moreover, individuals with DS read better
Arabic numbers than the control group. Data concerning the
discrimination of numbers in individuals with DS was also taken into consideration. Certainly, more research on children with DS is needed
although the findings here presented have implications to understand the
development of numerical skills in DS and to improve the
neuropsychological assessment of children with this genetic condition

Investigating circular business model innovation through keywords analysis
Ongoing economic, social and environmental developments have forced the production system to undertake a profound transformation, shifting from a linear to a circular model. The transformation towards a circular economy poses significant challenges for established companies, in many cases requiring a strong modification of their current business models, start-ups and new ventures. Firms need to completely rethink their value proposition, modifying how the product or service is produced, delivered to the customers and disposed of. As a result, interest in business model innovation with a view to a circular system has increased significantly over the last five years, leading to a flourishing literature production. Although several literature reviews have been published on the topic of the circular business model, few of them include the innovation dimension. Moreover, the time horizon covered by the previous reviews extends to 2019 and in one case to 2020. Since 2020 saw a 135% increase in scientific production compared to the previous year, it is necessary to update the prior works, taking into account the new contributions. Our paper aims to bridge this gap by proposing a literature review based on keywords analysis. In this way, it is possible to analyze the issues addressed in the circular business model innovation (CMBI) by categorizing them as core, emerging/phantom, trendy or intermittent. This analysis is particularly suitable for identifying future research directions as signaled by the emerging themes
The use of sustainable composites for the manufacturing of electric cars
The current work presents a material characterization for bio composites used for automotive industrial applica- tions. The mechanical properties are utilized in the design of components of an electric micro-car for the green innovation of automotive industry. The composite material is homogenized as equivalent orthotropic medium and its mechanical properties verified through laboratory testing. Finally a finite element model of some compos- ite parts are analyzed by considering classical materials and innovative bio-composites. The comparison shows the valuable structural performances of the natural-based composites with respect to classical ones both in terms of cost, economical impact and mechanical performances

Associazionismo familiare e disabilità. Ruoli, motivazioni e finalità. Una Scoping Review
The experiences of discrimination and the lack of social services and policies since the late 1960s have prompted many families to unite for the respect of the rights of people with disabilities and their parental figures. Along with the political dimension, the implications and pedagogical meanings of the associations have also grown, becoming the object of interest of Special Pedagogy. The need to rethink welfare from a perspective of inclusiveness and territorial proximity requires an update of the state of the art on the phenomenon of associations of families of children with disabilities at a national and international level. The Scoping Review intends to answer following question: What social roles do the associations of families with children with disabilities take and what motivations and purposes today at national and international level? The results highlight a knowledge gap on the subject in the literature, opening up wide research margins for Special Pedagogy
