    No full text

Effects of civic engagement on mental health in age comparison

    No full text
Aim. It appears to be common knowledge that civic engagement yields mental health benefits for the engaged individual, particularly if older adults are civically engaged. However, although such claims are consistent with theoretical considerations, empirical support for them is rather scarce and was often based on cross-sectional data. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the mental health benefits of civic engagement and potential differentiations in the effects of civic engagement (i.e., age differences, differences among nonpolitical and political engagement) using longitudinal data and a more robust methodological approach that focuses on within-person associations. Methods. The first two studies that are part of this thesis used data from the German Socioeconomic Panel (SOEP; Study I; N = 17,720) and the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS; Study II; N = 18,550) to investigate whether there are age differences in the effects of nonpolitical and political engagement on different mental health indicators. To separate within-person from between-person association, multilevel modeling was used. Study III used a sample of retired individuals from the SOEP (N = 9,043) to investigate associations between trajectories of nonpolitical engagement and life satisfaction across the retirement transition. To do so, multivariate latent growth curve modeling was employed. Results. In Study I and Study II, there were hardly any significantly positive associations between civic engagement and mental health indicators. If positive associations could be observed, they emerged mainly for associations between nonpolitical engagement and life satisfaction among older adults. In Study III, positive associations between trajectories of nonpolitical engagement and life satisfaction were more likely observed in retirement and among retirees with a lower level of life satisfaction. Conclusions. The results suggest that civic engagement generally does not yield considerable mental health benefits. However, individuals may indeed benefit from civic engagement after retirement as it may compensate for role losses following retirement

The Development of a Learning Journey in Maritime Education and Training to Promote Safe Ship Operations

Seafarers are considered to be essential “key workers” (International Maritime Organization, 2020b) in the maritime transport and global trade network, facilitating the prosperity of society (International Maritime Organization, 2022). The ability of the human element to develop and apply the necessary "skills, education and training", is understood as the crucial element in the safe operation of ships and the protection of the marine environment (International Maritime Organization, 2022). This study focuses on the human element within academic nautical education, aiming at a systematic approach to contextualise education and the application and transfer of knowledge to the safe operation of ships. For the empirical approach, qualitative interviews were conducted with maritime experts to explore the causes of human behaviour and to identify the competencies considered essential for a seafarer, now and in the future. Based on the findings, recommendations were made for methods of effective knowledge transfer to be integrated into the existing curriculum of higher education in nautical science.. This approach explores a reciprocal revelation of an extensive literature review and the application of the qualitative research, providing aspects within the global industry and the application to the educational scheme, advocating the promotion of the transfer knowledge in a contextual view. Variables such as individual aspects of learning, the accelerating impact of technological advances, economic constraints, cultural perceptions and the educator - student relationship were identified as significant factors to consider. A potential solution is proposed in the form of an integrated learning journey, which cultivates a comprehensive understanding of individual career motivations and reinforces individual strengths and skills. This recommendation advocates a lifelong learning perspective and a collaborative approach to the educational context with the wider maritime industry

The mediating role of social relationships between perceived classroom management and adolescents’ attitudes toward school: a multilevel analysis

    No full text
Social relationships in the school context – particularly teacher-student relationships and peer relationships – are related to students’ positive attitudes toward school, and consequently are of great importance regarding various aspects of learning and instruction. This can be concluded from studies that examine the influence of social integration on motivation, learning emotions, and positive attitudes toward school as an institution. Additionally, social relationships are closely related to the teacher’s style of instruction and student perceptions of the learning environment provided. However, there is little research so far, on the extent to which positive social relationships mediate correlations between aspects of teaching quality i.e., classroom management, and students’ positive attitudes toward school. Both classroom management and school-related social relationships are constructs that are assumed to be perceived similarly by students within one school, who experience similar conditions in regard to the intensity and frequency of common lessons. However, there are few research findings regarding shared assessments of classroom management and it’s correlations with teacher-student relationships by students within one school or class, and to date no results regarding the shared assessments of peer relationships. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the correlations between students’ individual and aggregated assessments of social relationships in school and classroom management, with their positive attitudes toward school. The sample consisted of N = 453 polytechnic school students in Upper Austria, from which a weighted dataset was derived. The findings from multilevel mediation analyses support the assumption of the mediating role of both teacher-student relationships and peer relationships regarding the correlation between classroom management and students’ positive attitudes toward school. However, significant correlations were found only at the individual student level
