Industrial heritage and post-industrial situation in the post-transformation era in Lower Silesia (Poland)
This descriptive paper outlines the post-industrial setting and industrial heritage in both a concrete case – south-western Poland – and some general respects, with the aim of contributing to the available knowledge about the contemporary post-industrial areas in Central Eastern Europe. To produce such an outline and to offer such a contribution, the paper offers an overview of the changes that happened in Poland since the transformation of 1989/90 with the special focus put on the industrial sector in the small- and medium-sized towns in the south-western border region of Poland. Moreover, the paper describes how the political and economic changes have impacted industry in Poland immediately after the transformation, as well as how the evolution of the political and economic situation has been shaping the industrial sector along the years until today. Further, to solidify the broad background of post-industrial regions, the paper touches upon topics that are more specific and interconnected: location of industry, employment rate changes, regional development policies, local development inequalities, and vocational schooling system. The most specific descriptions in the paper focus on the industrial heritage in the towns and cities in the region of Lower Silesia. Apart from reviewing the industrial history of Poland and of the selected western regions, this paper looks into the future by commenting on the transition between the so-called 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 industry phases and discusses whether small- and medium-sized towns in the Polish border areas are able to become connected to the future industrial network

Folgende These fasst den zentralen Lösungsansatz zusammen:
Understanding terrestrial water storage variations in northern latitudes across scales
The GRACE satellites provide signals of total terrestrial water storage (TWS) variations over large spatial domains at seasonal to inter-annual timescales. While the GRACE data have been extensively and successfully used to assess spatio-temporal changes in TWS, little effort has been made to quantify the relative contributions of snowpacks, soil moisture, and other components to the integrated TWS signal across northern latitudes, which is essential to gain a better insight into the underlying hydrological processes. Therefore, this study aims to assess which storage component dominates the spatio-temporal patterns of TWS variations in the humid regions of northern mid- to high latitudes.
To do so, we constrained a rather parsimonious hydrological model with multiple state-of-the-art Earth observation products including GRACE TWS anomalies, estimates of snow water equivalent, evapotranspiration fluxes, and gridded runoff estimates. The optimized model demonstrates good agreement with observed hydrological spatio-temporal patterns and was used to assess the relative contributions of solid (snowpack) versus liquid (soil moisture, retained water) storage components to total TWS variations. In particular, we analysed whether the same storage component dominates TWS variations at seasonal and inter-annual temporal scales, and whether the dominating component is consistent across small to large spatial scales.
Consistent with previous studies, we show that snow dynamics control seasonal TWS variations across all spatial scales in the northern mid- to high latitudes. In contrast, we find that inter-annual variations of TWS are dominated by liquid water storages at all spatial scales. The relative contribution of snow to inter-annual TWS variations, though, increases when the spatial domain over which the storages are averaged becomes larger. This is due to a stronger spatial coherence of snow dynamics that are mainly driven by temperature, as opposed to spatially more heterogeneous liquid water anomalies, that cancel out when averaged over a larger spatial domain. The findings first highlight the effectiveness of our model–data fusion approach that jointly interprets multiple Earth observation data streams with a simple model. Secondly, they reveal that the determinants of TWS variations in snow-affected northern latitudes are scale-dependent. In particular, they seem to be not merely driven by snow variability, but rather are determined by liquid water storages on inter-annual timescales. We conclude that inferred driving mechanisms of TWS cannot simply be transferred from one scale to another, which is of particular relevance for understanding the short- and long-term variability of water resources
Think the link. City Elements – Infrastructure and Networks Shaping Harbor Areas. Reflections on urban regeneration processes and documentation of the third Baltic International Summer School 2017 at HafenCity University Hamburg
The professional reality is really interdisciplinary!
When city transformation and evolution starts, what are the tools for successful strategies for urban interventions? How does digital planning for digital fabrication processes look like? How dedicated are the new professionals? And how does this all influence the future of bridge design?
These and other questions were analyzed by more than 60 students representing various disciplines of built environment and working together in international and interdisciplinary mixed project groups within the third Baltic International School (B.I.S.S.)—think the link. The B.I.S.S. launched by the HafenCity University Hamburg together with eight international partner universities from the Baltic Sea region aims to develop, test and implement new ways of interdisciplinary teaching, learning and designing as well as search for ties and correlations between experiences, cultures and cities, in particular around the infrastructural juncture along the Elbe Bridges, which was chosen as the area to be explored and worked on for 2017´s “City Elements—Infrastructure and Networks Shaping Harbor Areas” topic.
This publication serves as a source book for fresh and unconventional urban development and intervention in harbor cities as well as an inspiration for successful interdisciplinary working, teaching and learning. On top, it gives a full documentation of the B.I.S.S. and expert comments on the 15 interdisciplinary projects that were designed during the ten-day workshop in Hamburg in 2017
Enriching a Building Typology with Data on Heating Systems and Renovation Measures - A Case Study from Hamburg
This paper examines 1,500 energy certificates of residential buildings from the city of Hamburg to derive frequencies on typical heating systems currently operating in the building stock and their proposed replacements for an energetic renovation in context of public incentive programmes.
It was not possible to find a significant correlation between heating systems and IWU building types or heating systems and building’s construction epochs in general. Yet, differences between heating systems in different construction types were found (for example multi-family buildings have a higher tendency to be connected to a district heating grid than single-family buildings). Furthermore, the frequencies of the considered heating systems within Hamburg’s seven districts were derived from the dataset and may form a foundation for heat simulations on district- or city-scale.
Additionally, this paper delivers coefficients that display the correlation of final energy demand for different heating systems and allow the comparison of the system’s efficiency within one energetic level, the baseline condition, “usual” or “advanced” refurbishment level. The final energy demand computations are based on the TABULA Calculation Tool developed by the IWU with adjustments on the heating system according to the findings of the dataset examinations.
In the end, an estimation of refurbishment costs, based on another publication of the IWU, complete the data for residential buildings and enable a holistic assessment of refurbishment measures in residential including the ecological and economical criterions
This work comprises ten comparative case studies about the capitals planned and built in the 20th century: Canberra, Chandigarh, Islamabad, Brasilia, Gaborone, Lilongwe, Dodoma, Abuja, Putrajaya, Astana. The cities are all planned as a City Beautiful and are oriented towards the most modern and ambitious planning ideas at the time of their foundation. Therefore, they are especially suitable for an analysis of last century’s urban planning guiding principles and strategies. The case studies are based on the analysis of urban development plans, literature and statistics as well as on a large number of interviews with planners and scientists in the capital cities. The research is focused on motives and political goals of the contracting authorities, the urban concepts and the implementation management. The problems at time of foundation, the changes of strategies of planning in the meantime and the current situation in the capitals will be analyzed. As conclusion the future challenges for the urban development in the ten capitals will be identified. A few more capital cities of the 20th century and the first projects of capital cities in the 21th century will be described in an additional overview. As result of the comparison the biggest physically and methodic planning problems existing today will be pointed out. Changes of planning methods and strategies which are needed for more effective urban planning will be described
New Approach for Asset Management in District Heating (DH) Networks
Rehabilitation and renovation of district heating networks are mainly based on an event-based maintenance strategy. This means reactive removal of failures and damages and this also describes the uncertainties in the field of accurate lifetime assessment of district heating networks. However, utilities need evaluated estimation of the serviceability of the networks to define the best moment for reinvestment. Interval-based and condition-based lifetime assessment is used by utilities for lifetime assessment e.g. in the branch of sewer and drinking water-networks. First developments can be observed in the transfer of existing decision making tools from other branches to district heating branch. Nevertheless there are several important differences to be taken to account when lifetime assessment is carried out for district heating networks. On the one hand, inspection methodologies from other networks are not transferable because of temperature and pressure loads in DH-networks. Thus condition-based lifetime assessment needs another concept. On the other hand ageing of DH-networks highly depends on the used pipe system and the operation conditions.
The paper presents a new interdisciplinary approach for asset management in DH-networks that was developed by the authors. Different relevant ageing theories for DH-networks were put in order. By a Top-down and Bottom-Up approach these theories are characterized and set in relationship to each other. A first outlook for the next steps to activate these different theories mutually is given, that will make a sustainable rehabilitation planning possible and will lead to new business opportunities in the future
