Master students of the Resource Efficiency in Architecture and Planning (REAP) Program of related built environment disciplines considered public urban spaces and the question – for human needs, what makes the spaces vibrant? This paper reports main findings of the student group work. The first step of the investigation was for each student group to identify two spaces perceived as negative (non-vibrant) and two spaces perceived as positive (vibrant). The analysis of these spaces for all groups was consolidated into a list of negative criteria (aspects to be avoided) and positive criteria (aspects to be realised). The negative criteria for example included aspects about poor protection and accessibility. And the positive criteria included aspects that encouraged the use, enjoyment and comfort experienced in public spaces. Secondly, the groups identified spaces perceived as negative (non-vibrant) but with potential to become positive (vibrant) urban spaces. The potential identified was then substantiated for the spaces as specific criterion, which informed a framework to analyse the design of public open spaces. The criteria selection was guided by Jan Gehl’s work in public space design, for investigation methods, perception satisfiers and physical design criteria. Thirdly, environmental interventions to improve the environmental performance of the public space were considered, such an integrating Photovoltaic (PV) panels into building façades. Finally, students designed detailed proposals to transform the chosen non-vibrant public spaces. Emphasis was placed on bottom-up strategies to facilitate local community involvement in space activation initiatives

Envisioning futures: imagining technoscientific worlds in film

Films can be seen as cultural projections of technoscientific futures. The ways that technoscience is represented in films may shape the way we perceive future innovations and the social implications of such developments. Films can thus serve as documents to study cultural perceptions of the future. This paper explores how visions of future technoscientific worlds are enacted in films by analyzing exemplary short movies that were created for the first science film festival organized with support of the German federal government within the scope of its “foresight process.” By applying methods from qualitative social research, this paper discusses how the selected films represent the roles of both humans and technoscience in future worlds. Although these films each display different visions of such roles, the analysis shows that they all address the importance of technoscience in future lives and imagine that humans embrace an active role as (self-) entrepreneurs and political subjects within future technoscientific worlds

This thesis deals with the challenges of construction of a special kind of spatial and space-creating light-weight structures, the tensegrity-membrane-structures. The chosen procedure can be divided into three parts, a literature study, a parametric analysis based on a reference project, and a final realization of a multiparametric optimized section of a reference project. Based on the literature study on tensegrity- and tensegrity-membrane-structures, structural and design criteria were developed that allowed the classification of built projects in the context of the tensegrity-principle. It has been found, deviating from theoretical definitions, that structural changes of the systems are essential for an implementation, for example to ensure a necessary stability. It has also been shown that the use of textile membrane surfaces in particular gives the structures the potential to establish the tensegrity-principle in architecture, whereby the researched projects do not permit long-lasting implementation due to the choice of materials or otherwise do not guarantee complete protection due to the constructive detailing. The fundamental parametric analysis on the reference project made it possible to identify geometric parameters, to describe the structural effects on the membrane involved. It has been found that variations in different parameters create conflicting effects on structural behavior. In addition, a repeating area within the membrane was defined, which indicates less favorable stresses. Subsequently, a multiparametric optimization of the reference project was carried out, in which a system configuration was determined, which ensures an ideal two-axis load transfer of the textile membrane. Based on the optimized structure, a section was selected for implementation and, based on a developed concept, planned in detail and implemented constructively. It has been shown that the structural solutions developed, from a structural and functional point of view, enabled a successful realization, whereas the optical criteria were not satisfactorily implemented due to a lack of craftsmanship. In addition, a reliable FEM-based calculation of a tensegrity-membrane-structure was performed for the first time, which was confirmed by a comparison of the calculated deformation figure and the measured built structure. The findings gained in the present work on the construction of tensegrity-membrane-structures can serve as a basis for the further development and establishment of the tensegrity-principle in architecture

Dramaturgien postmigrantischer Performance : Citizenship in kultureller Bildung und künstlerischer Forschung

    Get PDF
This dissertation analyses the internal connection of performance and citizenship in post-migrant society with regards to their significance for practices and fields of action in artistic work with children, teenagers and adults. The main research question is how girls and women act in post-migrant society and which opportunities and limits for working on their post-migrant citizenship are thus offered to them by performance practices in cultural education and artistic research. The connection between performance and citizenship is grounded in current debates and discourses and then investigated within two artistic research projects at two levels: Firstly, by considering urgent questions of everyday cohabitation in urban settings, a problematic fragility of concepts of citizenship bound to the nation state is highlighted. Rather, articulations of citizens and non-citizens already constitute a performance of post-migrant citizenship on an everyday level. These enactments of citizenship are investigated in their constitutive dilemma between empowerment and compliance with a societal imperative to perform as valuable citizens. On the level of art practice, performance is understood as the artistic action of citizens and non-citizens. In the development of performances within artistic and educational contexts, dramaturgy is thus changing its role and function and gaining importance for participatory performance practices in general. The connection of performance and post-migrant citizenship has been investigated within the frame of two artistic research projects in which girls and women explore their opportunities to act as citizens. A relational dramaturgy is mapped as the key factor for working on questions of post-migrant citizenship with performance. In the following it is thus also used as a pattern for the analysis of (the own and other) artistic practices from the field of contemporary performance work with children. It then becomes clear that artistic performances that work on citizenship are often restricted by a societal imperative to perform while reproducing patterns of social exclusion and existing relations of power. Based on these results, a number of proposals are formulated that envision dramaturgical settings for artistic investigations in which trans-generational constellations of researchers can develop and rehearse alternative social drafts. The present dissertation is the last and concurrently the most comprehensive part of this research

Schwartauer Allee in Lübeck. Eine funktionale und gestalterische Aufwertung

    Get PDF

Cairo's Urban Transformation: Mohandeseen and Zamalek Narratives

    Get PDF
Not unlike other major cities around the world, Cairo has undergone a significant transformation over the course of its long history. While some elements of the past are still visible, the most notable being the Pyramids of Giza, other elements have long since disappeared. It is hard to imagine that historic Cairo was once at the center of a fertile landscape dotted with lakes, especially when confronted with today’s realities of a dense mostly gray cityscape covered by a thin layer of dust and a host of environmental problems. Cairo is the largest mega-city on the African continent and it continues to transform rapidly, both formally and informally. In an effort to guide Cairo’s transformation and limit informal development on its remaining fertile land, new state funded desert cities are being planned, built and inhabited. At the same time, massive tower blocks have replaced the once characteristic large prosperous villa estates within formally developed core-city areas such as Zamalek and Mohandeseen. In Zamalek this transformation has caused many upper class residents to withdraw to the desert cities leaving behind signs of decay, while Mohandeseen has become one of the most expensive areas in Cairo leaving almost no trace of the Garden City concept which guided its early development. While much needed attention goes to the expansion and improvement of informal areas and to the creation of new desert cities, it is also important to learn from the past as well as to guide the future transformation of core-city areas such as Mohandeseen and Zamalek. The following investigates the transformation of select areas of Mohandeseen around Lebanon Street and Aswan Square in addition to Zamalek to the north of the Gezira Sporting Club

Analyses of Axial Displacement Measurements from a Monitored District Heating Pipeline System

    Get PDF
The need for understanding the response of district heating piping systems on temperature-driven loads to improve life-time analysis has led to the development of a monitoring programme. This programme includes the design of the connection of an instrumented section of piping within an operating district heating network. The design complies with the current European district heating recommendations and standards [1, 4]. There are different conditions under testing and minor differences in design of the sections causing different friction resistance in the bedding soil. The pipes´ axial displacements are recorded in six positions along each of the sections of the pipeline. For the first time axial displacements of four similar buried preinsulated bonded pipes were measured under defined on-site conditions. This experimental setup allowed preliminary results of axial displacements, which are relevant for the district heating design, operation and maintenance. The contribution focusses on the results of the first period of operation, where a defined start-up procedure is performed (temperature increase up to 90 °C, held constant for 60 days). Afterwards the operating temperature was reduced down to the ambient temperature. The start-up procedure was repeated once before starting the cyclic-operating procedure up to 140 °C. The measured maximum pipes´ axial displacements at operating temperature of 90 °C were around 25 mm in the bows of the monitored pipelines. The measurement results are between estimated values using current recommendation procedures (23 mm) and commercial computer programs (31 mm). In addition, residual displacements at ambient temperature level were measured. The impact of unloading-reloading cycles on pipe deformation behaviour will be a future research focus of the ongoing monitoring programme. The results of the four sections will be presented in a comparative way and a forecast on the cyclic-operating procedure will be given here

Determination of Intensity-Based Stochastic Models for Terrestrial Laser Scanners Utilising 3D-Point Clouds

    Get PDF
Recent advances in stochastic modelling of reflectorless rangefinders revealed an inherent relationship among raw intensity values and the corresponding precision of observed distances. In order to derive the stochastic properties of a terrestrial laser scanner’s (TLS) rangefinder, distances have to be observed repeatedly. For this, the TLS of interest has to be operated in the so-called 1D-mode—a functionality which is offered only by a few manufacturers due to laser safety regulations. The article at hand proposes two methodologies to compute intensity-based stochastic models based on capturing geometric primitives in form of planar shapes utilising 3D-point clouds. At first the procedures are applied to a phase-based Zoller + Fröhlich IMAGER 5006h. The generated results are then evaluated by comparing the outcome to the parameters of a stochastic model which has been derived by means of measurements captured in 1D-mode. Another open research question is if intensity-based stochastic models are applicable for other rangefinder types. Therefore, one of the suggested procedures is applied to a Riegl VZ-400i impulse scanner, as well as a Leica ScanStation P40 TLS that deploys a hybrid rangefinder technology. The generated results successfully demonstrate alternative methods for the computation of intensity-based stochastic models as well as their transferability to other rangefinder technologies
