CLIMATIC IMPACT OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS. An Examination of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Residential Building Sector, Factors that influence Energy Use and the Energy Saving Potentials analysed for the Borough Altona in Hamburg

    Get PDF
Global warming is induced by rising greenhouse gas concentrations. In order to decrease concentrations, mitigation targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions have been defined on global and local levels. The residential building sector represents a keyfield of action where mitigation measures can be implemented. Regarding the life cycle of residential buildings in places like Hamburg, the emissions are highest during the operational phase. Emission investments of retrofitting measures are only amortised after a few years. In Germany, emissions deriving from space heating have the highest share of all operational emissions. The emission factor for applications based on electricity is much higher, but their share in final energy use is rather low. In the case study of Altona, one of seven boroughs in Hamburg, energy use for electricity and heating in private households in the year 2015 was collected, allocated to Statistical Areas and geographically illustrated. Hamburg’s target to limit heat energy use to a maximum of 55 kWh/m² by 2050 could be fulfilled in a small number of Statistical Areas. However, in a much larger share of Statistical Areas, energy use was around four times as high. Energy use and emissions per inhabitant tended to be rather low in urban areas and high in areas close to the river Elbe and in the suburbs. In nearly all areas of Altona, annual emissions per capita exceeded 1 t CO2 with a large number of areas exceeding 2 t CO2. The results emphasize an existing need for action in the residential building sector. The following linear regression analyses have calculated existing correlations of variables regarding urbanization, inhabitants and residential buildings with electricity and heat energy use. The objective was to gain a better understanding of existing interdependencies and the possibility to adjust mitigation action. The results showed that in Altona, density and urbanization, low shares of single family houses and elderly people, as well as low shares in employment and unemployment can serve as indicators for low energy use. Overall, the strongest correlations existed with income and living area per person. Building age did not show any correlation with energy use. The most effective measures of energy efficiency in the borough Altona would target living area per person and retrofits. Regarding carbon intensity, an increase in renewable sources is needed to improve the emission factor of district heat and electricity. Generally, the need and scope of measures could be determined more precisely if a monitoring system was introduced

Development of a Building Information Modeling-Parametric Workflow Based Renovation Strategy for an Exemplary Apartment Building in Seoul, Korea

    Get PDF
Apartments in South Korea have high maintenance costs and an average lifetime of 25 years due to poor construction qualities. The common apartment redevelopment strategy is completely demolishing the neighborhoods and then replacing them with new buildings. However, this research discusses the framework for the refurbishment of an existing building in Seoul using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and parametric tools. The virtual model of an exemplary existing building is constructed in a BIM environment. Parametric software is used to simulate the building’s environmental performance, in order to determine its energy demand for heating and cooling and the indoor comfort. In order to reduce the energy demand for heating and cooling, improve the indoor comfort, generate photovoltaic energy and extend the building’s lifetime, a modular building envelope renovation system is developed. Building simulation results of the improved building envelope are used to quantify the differences with the existing building. The research results illustrate significant improvements in energy performance, comfort and lifetime extension that can be achieved. Furthermore, a guideline for a streamlined building optimization process is provided, that can be transferred and used for the planning and optimization of other building renovation projects

    Entering voids

    Get PDF
It seems that in our growth-driven society voids can disrupt the sound fabric of our cities, especially if they remain in their state of indeterminacy over a lengthy period of time. Whether voids reside in built or in undeveloped structures and whether they manifest through the absence of an initial function or a specific audience, more often than not they are perceived as discomforting or uncanny blind spots in the urban environment. Entering voids is an investigation into the notion of voids in the urban environment and their social perceptions and implications. It aims to extend the literature depicting voids as self-sufficient, transformative and eventful spaces and to contribute to sociological and urbanist research on the impact of urban decay on citizens. It is found that the accumulation of voids in their everyday environment can affect people’s perceptions of their built and human surroundings significantly and culminate in their changed social interactions, daily routes and routines. Ultimately, it is argued that in areas with social tensions urban voids can take the role of projection surfaces and contribute to the self-perpetuation of social tensions and resentments between different groups of people

As one module of the master’s programme, the interdisciplinary project (Project III) in the third semester annually takes place in a different setting of real conditions abroad. Our semester, the 8th generation of REAP students, had the chance to work on and in a city of the Arabic Republic of Egypt. The satellite city of El Sheikh Zayed, located approximately 60km west of Cairo, was chosen as our focus area on which our projects were later developed. The primary emphasis of the so called Project III was to promote a sustainable approach within an urban development of this desert city and introducing climate responsive strategies for enhancing the living conditions in various ways and facets in Sheikh Zayed City. The project took place as a cooperation between the Architectural Department of Cairo University (CUFE) and HafenCity University Hamburg and was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) who generously provided support for this project. This brochure highlights the outlook of six projects completed by the 8th generation of REAP students coming from different countries and backgrounds, such as architecture and landscape architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, environmental engineering, environmental science, economics and sociology. The projects presented in the following pages of this brochure are based on a comprehensive and thorough analysis of Cairo and the project site of Sheikh Zayed. Besides a functional theoretic approach, the consideration of real-life conditions and a feasible strategy were a key focus within the project development during this semester
