Multi-Objective Validation of SWAT for Sparsely-Gauged West African River Basins—A Remote Sensing Approach
Predicting freshwater resources is a major concern in West Africa, where large parts of the population depend on rain-fed subsistence agriculture. However, a steady decline in the availability of in-situ measurements of climatic and hydrologic variables makes it difficult to simulate water resource availability with hydrological models. In this study, a modeling framework was set up for sparsely-gauged catchments in West Africa using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), whilst largely relying on remote sensing and reanalysis inputs. The model was calibrated using two different strategies and validated using discharge measurements. New in this study is the use of a multi-objective validation conducted to further investigate the performance of the model, where simulated actual evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and total water storage were evaluated using remote sensing data. Results show that the model performs well (R2 calibration: 0.52 and 0.51; R2 validation: 0.63 and 0.61) and the multi-objective validation reveals good agreement between predictions and observations. The study reveals the potential of using remote sensing data in sparsely-gauged catchments, resulting in good performance and providing data for evaluating water balance components that are not usually validated. The modeling framework presented in this study is the basis for future studies, which will address model response to extreme drought and flood events and further examine the coincidence with Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) total water storage retrievals
Virtual reality in hydrography: Immersive visualisation of the Arctic Clyde Inlet (Canada) using bathymetric and terrestrial data
Due to recent advances in hardware and software technologies, virtual reality (VR) is becoming ubiquitous, finding its use in more and more professional applications apart from the gaming industry. Up to now, VR could be successfully implemented for virtual surgery, virtual therapy, flight and vehicle simulations and cultural heritage. While geographical data sets are commonly projected in a top-down view onto a 2D surface, virtual reality could become a helpful tool to visualise terrain data in a more intuitive and immersive way. This study covers the methodology, advantages, limitations and practical usages of such visualisation tools for hydrographic applications
Individual recognition schemes in hydrography
Individual recognition schemes assess a professional against the necessary competencies for a particular profession and award the successful candidate with a certification. The professionals keep their certifications as long as they meet the requirements. In 2018, the German Hydrographic Society (DHyG) prepared a questionnaire in order to conduct a survey on the need of individual recognition schemes in Germany and Europe. This article discusses the most important results of the study
This bachelor thesis relates to the biomass wood in the form of wood pellets considering the climate protection using renewable energies, whereby the focus is on the heating supply of Hamburg. By means of the theoretical basis and the specification of the product wood pellets in the German market as well as the process chain, the necessary foundation is laid. In light of the relevant air pollutants it is analysed to what extend undesirable emissions occur
that result from energy combustions. By consideration from the economic perspective nationwide subsidies of wood pellet heatings take a central role. To achieve a better assessment and evaluation with respect to the chances and risks of wood pellets, most important advantages and disadvantages of wood pellets heating systems are specified. Using the present situation of the heating supply, the status quo and the local available quantities of the biomass wood in Hamburg are recognised. The interests and opportunities for action of the city of Hamburg point out its former, actual and future relation to wood pellet heatings.
The central results of this thesis can be described as follows:
In the manufacture as waste product of the wood industry the product wood pellets are offered at high quality. Overall the proportion of biogenic solid fuels increases. The quantity of wood pellets is strongly dependant on the energy efficiency of the building. In general the determining values for dust emissions of wood pellets combustion are higher than for the energy source oil and natural gas, however they can be further reduced by filters and admixtures.
Economically the CO2-Equivalent for wood pellets is minor as well as a low primary energy factor is stated. Wood pellets are characterised by low price levels overall. Subsidies on federal and state level are possible up to the amount of about 25 percent. Hamburg itself specifically supports facilities of existing buildings as of 100 kW, provided no district heating is available. The renewability of wood pellets is only ensured with reforestation. The space requirements for storage and filling as well as the disposal of the ashes are micro-economically a disadvantage. This also applies to the acquisition and maintenance costs. Status quo: Eventually wood chips are preferable to wood pellets in case of larger combustion facilities, whereas smaller facilities are dependent on small-format bio-mass with high energy density. Due to the limited availability of natural wood resources in Hamburg the city is limiting the development opportunities of wood pellets. Hamburg ought to reduce the import
of wood pellets from abroad and support it’s own region according to demand. Finally the wood pellets combustion should be improved with filters and supported by subsidies
Career Legacy of the London Olympic Games 2012 - Among Local East Londoners
East London, the host neighbourhood of the Summer Olympic Games 2012, had been a hub of economic deprivation and urban regeneration for the three decades leading up to the Games. The legacy agenda of London 2012 was therefore presented as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to accelerate the regeneration process and address the deprivation issues of the area. One of the primary legacy commitments of the London 2012 strategy framework was to mitigate the impact of the 2008 recession on East London employment by providing jobs, training and career prospects.
At the same time, the Olympic Games are also an opportunity for a host city to showcase its delivery qualities and organisational capacities to the world through global media channels. While, because the project nature of the Olympic Games is highly complex, risky and prestigious, the host city and Olympic deliverers have been commonly accused of giving priority to transnational elites over the local workforce. This research addresses the employment outcomes of the London Olympic Games 2012 in terms of legacy commitments for local East Londoners and the delivery dedication. The main research question is:
What is the employment legacy of the London Olympic Games 2012 for local East Londoners?
The research question is examined by
1) reviewing academic papers and evaluation reports on Olympic employment and
2) a qualitative analysis of collected data from in-depth interviews with five Olympic experts and 80 locals in Olympic boroughs.
In addition, 50 LinkedIn profiles of London 2012 professionals are analysed in a complementary study. According to the findings, we can infer that although the Olympic employment programmes of London 2012 met their target number commitments, the occupational engagement of locals was limited to low-skilled jobs. The evidence shows that at the high-skilled employment level of London 2012, recruitment proceeded in an exclusive manner, with Olympic organisations being reluctant to put the delivery of the event at risk by taking people from outside their ‘trust circles’. In terms of the bid rhetoric, it can thus be suggested that the legacy building of the London Olympic Games 2012 displayed particular
shortcomings in ensuring that the labour market for the Games was effectively integrative and inclusive for local communities. Although this study focuses on the reality of the employment legacy of London 2012, the findings may well have a bearing on the neoliberal notions behind the legacy-building agenda and may strengthen the idea that hosting a mega-event such as London 2012 could lead to the reproduction of inequality in the local labour markets of host cities
Das zweite künstlerische Projekt "The Shape of Things to Come" betreibt daher eine szenisch-performative Analyse von wirkmächtigen visuellen Darstellungsformen der Zukunft.
This study examines relations between performing arts and future studies from the perspective of theatre science/performance theory and within the framework of artistic research with children. It questions the roles the performing arts play in the field of future studies or could play as an alternative mode of researching the/a future.
Starting point are references between the two fields, that can be observed historically and today. A significant example is the term 'scenario' and the technique of 'scenario planning', that is constitutive for the interdisciplinary field of future studies since the middle of the 20th century. Although the term 'scenario' or 'Szenarium' has its origin in theatre, it is not linked to a theatrical or performative practice. There is a need to explore how the development of future scenarios and – more general – how future studies can be realised in a practical and performative way. The following questions are explored in a theoretical and practical approach: Can a performative approach produce alternative visions of the future beyond a 'future consensus'? Can it offer new forms of public participation in the production of future knowledge? Can it produce a way of dealing with the future other than a 'future management'?
The work is based on a historical analysis of future studies and their positioning between science and art. References to the arts are worked out as well as the promises, that com'e along. The first artistic project 'Junges Institut für Zukunftsforschung' stages the participation of children in the research of the future. Potentials but also difficulties of an artistic research of the future can be identified regarding the experimental setup and the research process. The second artistic projet 'The Shape of Things to Come' deals with visual representations or visual forms of the future and conducts a performative analysis of these shapes. It is discussed, in what way visual shapes also shape our (mental) concept of the future. An alternative research of the future can also be understood as a research on the concept of the future itself, that is rarely made explicit.
Finally i propose to think the rehearsal/the practice of rehearsing, that is typical for the field of performing arts, as a mode of future studies. Like this, the relation of future studies and performing arts is reformulated. It is argued, that performative practices of rehearsing can already be seen as practices of future research. Furthermore it is worked out, that also public performances can become a tryout for a possible future: They consist of performative acts of making things public or of instituting a new public. Like this, the concept of a performative and political research of the future, that produces a democratic 'future on trial', is formulated
Immersive Virtual Reality Visualisation of the Arctic Clyde Inlet on Baffin Island (Canada) by Combining Bathymetric and Terrestrial Terrain Data
Through VR it is possible to virtually explore computer-generated environments and to be immersed into most unique and remote areas without leaving the current real-life situation.
While geographical datasets are commonly projected in a top-down view onto a 2D surface leading to cognitive challenges and ambiguous interpretations, virtual reality could become a helpful tool to visualise terrain data in a more intuitive way. This thesis explores the advantages, limitations and practical usages of such visualisations. Furthermore, the thesis explores the feasibility of virtual reality presentations in terms of accuracy and performance and investigates potential benefits for combining terrestrial and bathymetric datasets.
Against this background, the water body Clyde Inlet located on eastern Baffin Island, Canada has been visualised in virtual reality. A methodology has been conducted to merge terrestrial and bathymetric datasets and to import vast digital terrain models into the virtual reality software Unreal Engine 4.
In this work, the digital terrain model comprising Clyde Inlet was computed using the open source datasets of ArcticDEM, Canadian DEM, IBCAO as well as the bathymetric dataset acquired during the research cruise MSM66 in 2017.
The result offers the possibility to observe the terrain with or without the water surface in VR by using three different ways of locomotion. Moreover, distinct measurements can be performed, and terrain textures can be altered. Further results include the accurate import of terrain data and ample performance. With the aid of a user survey, the usability and utility of terrain visualisations in VR for various disciplines was assessed
