    Get PDF
This dissertation investigates the possibilities of compiling life cycle assessments during the design stage, while comparing the approach to common practice. For this purpose reference projects were examined and input as well as output streams were analysed. Another focus is on the various planning stages and their relevance for the definition of individual building components as well as their impact on the end result. Simplified calculation methods for an ecological life cycle assessment were developed, which can be conducted during early project stages due to the low effort required. The calculation methods have been developed to correspond to the project team’s state of knowledge during each planning stage. Therefor the data required for the calculation methods has been optimized with regard to the data, which is available to the design team during each planning stage while generating little or no additional efforts. The proposed calculation methods have been validated with a fully standardised method and were proven to deliver meaningful results, which can be used reasonably. Based on the reference projects that have been investigated, pictographs were developed to aid the planning team regarding lifecycle assessment optimization of the building structure. The pictographs allow for a clear and practicable assessment of design options regarding an ecological optimization. The investigated reference projects are typical reinforced concrete structures and reflect characteristic buildings in Germany, which have been implemented between 2014 and 2017 or will be finished until 2019. Concrete and its reinforcement has the biggest impact on the life cycle assessment results. Based on this finding various reinforced concrete structures and constructive alternatives have been examined and compared. Furthermore an analysis to determine the influence of span, ceiling thickness and compressive strength on the results of a life cycle assessment, while maintaining the standardised structural stability has been undertaken. To determine the expense of a complete life cycle inventory analysis, a sensitivity analysis for common groups of substances has been created and assessed. All results of this investigation have been compiled towards a planning strategy and are intended to support the optimisation of life cycle analysis output streams during the building’s design stage

In this artistic-scientific dissertation I'm concerned with two artistic research projects that developed in confrontation of performativity and theatricality of the court. I conducted the artistic research in collaboration with children. The jurisdiction I approach from an alien perspective, from my perspective as a theatre scholar and performance artist. The present work relates the worlds of court and theatre in different ways, in order to get information between them about their respective performative way of being and functioning. Court and theatre are placed in a relationship, making similarities and differences artistically and scientifically productive. For the artistic research, the observations of children were leading, of those who have no voice of their own in the Theatre of Law, but are nevertheless subject to it. In theory, I started with an ethical-political questioning of artistic research with children in the theatre, which, in the light of Walter Benjamin's close examination of aesthetic and juridical problems and including Jacques Rancière's political reflections on the pedagogical, develops possibilities to research with children in a collaborative and collective way. From these thoughts about my poetics and methodology, I turn in the second chapter to the scene of the court. Which aspects of spatial and temporal design are to be taken as the basis for a consideration of jurisprudence from the perspective of the theatre? The following two chapters describe the practical encounter between these institutions in two artistic projects with children, with the first bringing the theatre into court and the second bringing the court into the theatre. The corresponding theoretical problems, namely the relationship between the theatrical and bureaucratic dispositive of jurisprudence in the first project and figurations of representation in the second project, emerged from the experiences of artistic research, and above all from those of children. Concluding, I resume these four approaches to the relationship between jurisprudence and theatre – to the ›performance of the court‹ – from the viewpoints of the concepts of theatricality and performativity

Task-Oriented Visualization Approaches for Landscape and Urban Change Analysis

    Get PDF
Approaches to landscape and urban change analysis are still far away from being fully automatic or operational. For this reason, the concept of Geovisual Analytics is proposed, combining computational and visual/manual processing steps. This contribution concentrates on the latter part with the overall goal of improving its usability. For this purpose, a classification of tasks is created, which often occur in the context of change analysis. This serves as the basis for the assignment of suitable map types to change processing results. Beyond this, it is pointed out that in many cases an appropriate pre-processing of data is imperative to preserve or enhance certain spatial relationships or characteristics for visualization. This is demonstrated using the example of data classification prior to choropleth mapping. Methods are described which allow the preservation of local extreme values, large value differences between adjacent polygons, clusters, and hot/cold spots. Finally, discussing future research and developments, it will be stressed that the importance of visual methods in the context of big data change analysis will continue to increase, which is due to the particular ability of maps to generalize and reduce complex data to a minimum

Passive Adaptive Strategies for the Optimisation of Comfort and Energy Demand in Traditional and Contemporary Buildings in Hot, Humid Climates

Salvador, Brazil was chosen as the location for a hot and humid climate. Temperatures lay in the range between 25 and 32°C in the hot period (around December) and 22 and 27°C in the cooler one (around June). An assessment of the outdoor temperatures with adaptive comfort model EN 15251 shows that with only natural ventilation there are good chances to reach comfort. Overheating may arise from internal use, artificial light and solar heat transfer through windows as well as through opaque walls and roofs (exterior surfaces absorb solar radiation, construction heats up and the high-temperature transfers remarkably through the construction to the interior). Representative local traditional and contemporary buildings were selected and analysed with transient thermal simulation. Results show that the heat transfer through the constructions is in case of overheating the dominant component. In both buildings, the last floor under the roof overheats. Only with an improvement of the construction (by adding layers that contribute to thermal insulation) comfort can be reached. The intermediate floor in the traditional building with thick adobe walls (60 cm) behaves very well, while the contemporary building with thin concrete walls (10 cm) overheats. Comfort can be reached only by bringing the wall into shadow (cladding) or optimizing the construction by adding insulation or replacing concrete with hollow bricks, increased natural (shaft) ventilation and shading of the windows. Positively it has to be said that, in the local contemporary architecture itself with building shape, (moderate) size and placement of windows, shading system, cross ventilation is not a fundamental obstacle to reach comfort. In other countries, the trend to bigger windows leads without AC in any case already to discomfort. But the tendency to construct cost-optimized, to use “modern” materials like concrete (without protecting cladding or insulation) and the hope that users will install AC has led to non-optimal constructions. Detailed recommendations for the improvement of roof and wall constructions are given in the paper

Towards carbon free cities: interplay between urban density and energy demand

Compensating area, which refers to off-site land being used if the energy demand cannot be met due to the urban arrangement of buildings, is required in a carbon-free city because the energy demand, including thermal energy (heating, cooling and hot water), power (ventilation and artificial light) in buildings and transport, need to be covered by the renewables gained on site or in the surrounding area outside of the town. This paper aims to develop a method to explore the urban density that could deliver an energy saving, land saving, and human-scaled urban situation. Various scenarios of urban densities in the cities in different climate zones were created to emphasize the comparison and the relative difference in the required compensating area. It is found that, although transportation energy consumption can be reduced by increasing number of storeys, the rate of decrease slows down as the number of storeys increases. Also, building energy consumption increases with the number of storeys because the artificial light will reach saturation (100% of hours of use) with the increased number of storey. In terms of the comparison between climate zones, the optimal scenario would be 4 to 6 storeys in cold or moderate climates. And the optimal choice would be 6 to 8 storeys in the hot and humid climates. With regard to the consideration of human scale, not only do these optimal ranges of the number of storeys provide good daylight access, but they also fall into the range of human scale

Urban street canyons – impact of different materials and colours of facades and ground and different positions of persons on outdoor thermal comfort

    Get PDF
Outdoor thermal comfort in urban street canyons has become, in times of adaptation to climate change, an important field of research also for cities in moderate climates. Many investigations can be found dealing with measurements of façade and ground temperatures, solar radiation, wind, etc. The impact of different materials, colors, low emissivity paints, green facades, etc. is widely discussed. To have the possibility to compare and assess these different measures a simple but holistic model based on standard VDI 3787 (‘Klima-Michel model’) was developed. It is extended by a model for the dynamic behavior of materials using only known physical parameters of the materials. This model shows good accordance with measurements but can be used independently of measurements and for all materials and locations. The assessment is done with the Universal Thermal Comfort Index (UTCI). The whole model is described in this paper. In the second part of the paper a street canyon with height to width ratio 1:1 was investigated for a moderate / Mediterranean climate (Bern). Different measures for the reduction of heat stress are investigated, compared and could be finally classified in a list of priorities regarding their impact. Shading has highest impact, less of the persons (sun umbrellas, awnings, trees) but more of the whole canyon (fabric, big trees). Green facades and low emissivity paints reduce heat stress remarkably. Very bright materials increase heat stress because of their high reflection of solar radiation from facades and ground to the persons in the canyon (this effect was found as dominating the corresponding reduction of IR radiation from the absorbing material to the persons). The influence of massive versus light materials is quite low

    Gesundheit

    Get PDF
