INTERSPECIES/INTERSPACES. Of humans and other species
The broad variety of relationships between humans and non-humans in cities was subject to a two-semester project seminar in Metropolitan Culture at HafenCity University Hamburg. Against the backdrop of the sudden outbreak of the COVID 19-pandemic in spring 2020 the an online-publication was produced that describes urban fauna and flora in crisis, reflects the consequences and short-term effects of the global lockdown, and is driven by a basic desire for shaping a better togetherness of humans and non-humans in cities.
By reflecting on current complexities in urban coexistence some urgent questions were tackled:
• Who is actually to blame for Corona and what role do the animals play in it?
• What happens to a zoo and its animals when nobody goes there?
• Is there a connection between the corona crisis and the climate crisis?
• Do animals have a right to the city?
• What would happen if huge swarms of locusts would not haunt East Africa but Hamburg?
• Why are we still not eating vegan?
The different contributions were carried out in and with various media: for example texts, photo collages, short films, hand drawings, playlist
Stakeholder Collaboration in Energy Transition: Experiences from Urban Testbeds in the Baltic Sea Region
Energy-efficiency improvement measures for existing building stock are vital for reaching EU climate mitigation and energy targets, especially in urban areas, which are responsible for a large share of total energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The complex and multi-faceted nature of the energy sector is characterized currently by fragmented planning practices and a lack of cross-sector action to improve resource efficiency. The authors examine a comprehensive multi-stakeholder collaboration model at the district-level as a method to systematically address challenges of energy planning in urban areas while exploiting synergies with local conditions. A detailed description and evaluation of formats for successful collaboration is provided, considering lessons learned by the Interreg BSR project AREA 21 including seven cities from the Baltic Sea Region (BSR). The authors propose five main features for stakeholder collaboration in energy planning: inclusivity, intermediate scale, interactivity, mutual benefit, and institutionalization. The analysis provides evidence of successful multi-stakeholder collaboration that resulted in the development of strategies and action plans for energy improvements for the selected urban areas
Development of a Model for describing, evaluating and designing Communication Concepts in Factories in the Context of Industry 4.0
Far-reaching changes in the technical and organisational structure have influenced the communication between the elements of a factory. In particular, Industry 4.0 as a contemporary trend in production technology and many related areas of science places new requirements for communication. Thus, expectations comprise a wide variety of effects and potentials of Industry 4.0 on communication in factory systems. Exemplarily, efficiency and productivity increases are most frequently named as effects of industry 4.0. They seem advantageous by industrial enterprises, whereby the raising of these potentials is also a necessary competitive factor. However, such influences can trigger other effects with interdependent impacts on the components of factory systems. These effects can have both positive and negative impacts in factory systems. Still a comprehensive and generally valid description of these aspects is not yet available. Similarly, there is no understanding of the cause-effect relationships between the requirements for communication between the system components of a factory arising from Industry 4.0. The lack of specific understanding of Industry 4.0 caused effects and the cause-effect relationships between the requirements for communication between the factory system components lead to the inability to design effective communication concepts in factory systems. Therefore, existing communication systems remain exposed to undesired effects and leave desired effects underutilized. In order to close this research gap, a holistic model for the description, evaluation and the design of effective communication concepts in factories in the context of Industry 4.0 is in development within the frame of "Komm 4.0", a research project of the Institute for Production Systems and Logistics at Leibniz University Hannover and the WISSENSARCHITEKTUR Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture at TU Dresden. The pursuit of this research project is to describe and evaluate existing communication concepts, as well as design more effective concepts and to adapt previous recommendations in terms of communication concept design where necessary
AirportCity Hamburg!? Development potentials of the Hamburg Airport transitional space
This report is the result of a research project of the same title conducted at the HafenCity University Hamburg. The motivation behind the project is, on the one hand, the observed contradiction between airport growth and urban growth in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and on the other, the very limited room for further development of the urbanized area of the airport transitional space. In this report the central question is asked to which extent the transitional space (and related urbanized areas) between airport and city – viewed as analogous to the transitional space between city and port in Hamburg – offers room for development potentials. For the purposes of this report, the result of related planning trajectories is conceptually understood as FlugHafenCity or AirportCity. The report outlines the history of the founding, development and transformation of international airports and landside air traffic facilities in Germany. Based on the history of airports in Germany, central economic, planning-related and airport-specific terminology is discussed. In follow, the report retraces the particular history of the airport in Hamburg. Different than many other German cities, Hamburg comprises a city airport surrounded by a quasi-urban transitional space that separates and connects airport and city. This transitional space is subject to current urbanization pressures while comprising and intersecting previously urbanized areas. Against the background of the ongoing growth of both airport and city, the particular site-based interrelation between Hamburg Airport and the transitional space surrounding it results in specific problems, yet also potentials for the urbanized areas partial to and within the transitional space. This report identifies the related central problems. They pose specific challenges that serve to formulate follow-up questions for future research. A comparison of case studies of the transitional spaces of three European city airports – London, Zurich and Düsseldorf – offers initial results. These results indicate lessons learned from the experiences made by actors involved in the three case studies and, in follow, provide a knowledge basis to better evaluate the situation in Hamburg. Finally, the report points out individual, local development potentials for the economic development, the infrastructural improvement and the urban design of the fragmented urbanized area of the Hamburg Airport transitional space. In sum, these specify how planning can contribute to the development of an AirportCity, with the FlugHafenCity Hamburg as example
Real-world Laboratories for the transformation of inner cities – experiences and critical reflection
Online-shopping and digitization not only change our everyday life, they also affect the spatial and functional structures of inner cities and neighbourhood centres. This article reflects the opportunities, challenges and preliminary results of Real-world Laboratories for the transformation of centres, which are implemented as part of the TransZ research project. The project assumes that the future viability of urban centres depends, among other things, on whether and how it is possible to integrate the relevant local stakeholders into the process and to give them the opportunity to actively co-design the transformation. In particular, the article refers to established urban planning and urban research, in which transdisciplinary research approaches with the participation and activation of relevant planning actors are largely established. It becomes clear that Real-world Laboratories can meaningful complement established formal and informal urban planning processes
This work examines La Biblioteca Popular de La Carcova, a self-managed communal popular library, in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires under the spectrum on care in current feminist discourses and urban studies. It is a situated perspective in pandemic times of 2020. The issues of this work move between current reports and effects due to the coronavirus crisis, the understanding of educación popular and acting in prácticas autogéstionadas (-> auto-agency practices), collaboration projects between architectural faculties and informal districts and draws a broad picture of the place and its context, filled with illustrations, storytellings and imaginarios urbanos.
By taking up contemporary academic and artistic positions on care, the case is analyzed in its practices by means of which the social, built and discursive structuring of its materialization is problematized. The every-day realities in a highly vulnerable and marginalized neighborhood that was built and emerged informally bring manifold challenges and problematics that are not taken care of. The aim is to take stock, locate and study specific moments in urban production in order to find out interconnections and interdependencies in the local context. I critically examine what ethics of care mean in relation to architecture and urban design, how these dimensions are spatially and socially (re)produced and how they can be (re)imagined.
