Landscape transformations in Albania. A photographic survey on the traces of Italian travellers in the Balkans

After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Albania became a possible land of conquest for Italy, France, and Austria. Explorations and surveys of the newly liberated territory involved numerous scientific a nd military expeditions. At the end of the nineteenth century, the Reale Società Geografica Italiana had been carrying out a systematic study of Albanian landscape, mainly aimed at geographical research. Relevant Italian scholars and geographers travelled to Tirana and Valona. Antonio Baldacci (1867-1950) between 1892 and 1902, Roberto Almagià (1884-1962), Aldo Sestini (1904-1988) in 1940, Bruno Castiglioni (1898-1945) who recorded geomorphological aspects as an army officer following Italian troops. Two expeditions in 1940 allowed them to collect all the information needed to publish the fundamental monograph “L’Albania”, printed in 1943. Bruno Castiglioni oversaw the geomorphological aspects of the study, Ferdinando Milone covered anthropology and economics, and Aldo Sestini investigated the geographical features of each region. Another landmark contribution is Antonio Baldacci’s Itinerari albanesi: (1892-1902), which described discovering an obscure land, its natural features and the built environment. The contribution for the sixth issue of Sophie draws on a photographic campaign carried out between July 2016 and June 2018, and currently being finalised in the form of a Catalogue of Landscape Typologies. The author c onducts a photographic c ampaign a long the s ame itineraries covered by the aforementioned geographers, discovering similarities and differences with the contemporary Albanian landscape. Manuscripts, diplomatic accounts, publications, and photographs produced by Italian travellers of the early twentieth century are being compared with the current status of the visual environment. Tourism-related activities have altered the scenery of the coast, particularly the so-called Riviera that connects Vlorë with Sarandë, while other sectors of the northern mainland have remained relatively unchanged. This ongoing research is expected to inform a general catalogue of Albanian landscapes, intended as a tool for planning future interventions across the country. The catalogue could be a useful tool to build an alternative visual cartography. The Catalogue of Landscape Typologies collects four hundred geolocated shots of selected views, which have been classified and redrawn to identify recurring features and visual landmarks. Images are being disassembled in coherent morphological layers: woods, agricultural plains, cultivated slopes, spontaneous vegetation fields, urbanization areas, water bodies and the profile of the mountains. Contemporary Albania and other countries in the Balkans are rapidly changing the quality of its built environment in an attempt to emerge and progress towards the European standards. On the other hand, one could argue that unique views can be lost along the way

Mapping out educational decisions in the policy-making process

    No full text
In this work we will focus on the construction of policies and on the process of decision-making given that they both make explicit a project – or projects – of social change. (...) The object of this article is to provide a theoretical framework capable of illuminating educational decisions in the present context of sociocultural transition. To carry out this objective we shall attempt to construct a device for the mapping out of educational decisions based on three ideal types of dealing with social change. It is not our intention to provide an empirical analysis of concrete policies, but rather to offer a hermeneutical device, which allows one both to escape from the postmodernist “anything goes” and to locate political action in the new social geography of decision-making

Community artistic practices are established themselves as an arena of constructive tension between artistic proposals and political, educational, social and community perspectives. The hybrid and diverse territory of these practices is the space of the construction of this study, that uses semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions within three Portuguese theater groups, from urban and rural territories, that continuously develop community artistic practices. The objectives of the study are: identifying the emerging strengths and weaknesses in creative processes and participation associated with them, and investigating the links between theatrical making and civic and political participation. Conclusions resulting from analysis allow the identification of three themes and respective relationships between them: experiences of civic and political participation before the integration in theater groups; theater concepts; and perceived effects in civic and political participation. Connections between theatrical approaches and educative and community principles, predispositions associated with civic and political participation and broad social, political, educational and cultural contexts of the groups are discussed. These aspects are shown to be relevant in the development of theater concepts that integrate the political dimension and in the perceived effects (individual, group, community) by the study participants. Submetido: 19.07.2020Aceite: 15.12.202

Photographing the altered identity of lansdscapes

“As this wave from memories flows in, the city soaks it up like a sponge and expands. A description of [the city] as it is today should contain all [the city’s] past. The city, however, does not tell its past, but contains it like the lines of a hand, written in the corners of the streets, the gratings of the windows, the banisters of the steps, the antennae of the lightning rods, the poles of the bags, every segment marked in turn with scratches, indentations, scrolls.” Italo Calvino The use of photography as a research tool and as an artistic form of expression to represent landscapes involves the challenge of representing their physical, cultural, social, and political marks, as well as their identity and perceptual singularity as a place. Landscapes represent territories which were transformed by human action and, as such, reveal an understanding and a set of values of past and present societies, witnessing the various (trans)formations of space - natural and artificial space - in line with article 5, a. of the European Landscape Convention of the Council of Europe, the landscape represents an “essential component of the human environment, an expression of diversity of its common and natural heritage and a base for its identity“. O “vírus” da exclusão socioeconômico-digital no ensino superior em tempos de COVID-19

This paper aims to present the findings of an initial research called “Pandemic and education: narratives of public higher education students in the State of Alagoas, Brazil” which, in the year 2020, problematized: what is the situation of students in relation to the Internet access and the equipment available for online classes during the peak phase of Covid-19? Based on the quanti-qualitative approach, and attempting to “answer” this problem, we used as sources questionnaires and online conversation sessions with students of the undergraduate courses in Pedagogy and Journalism of the Federal University of Alagoas, Maceió Campus. Following this course, we characterize the students as thinkingpractitioners subjects, anonymous heroes, who have reinvented new ways of doing things and studying, in the personal, domestic and academic spheres. Their narratives demonstrated the preexistence of a virus of inequality in socioeconomic and digital contexts of the students of the courses investigated before the pandemic state which was unveiled during the tragedy caused by Covid-19 in the present history (2020-2021).Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar os achados de uma pesquisa matriz denominada “Pandemia e educação: narrativas de estudantes do ensino superior público do Estado de Alagoas, Brasil” que, no ano de 2020, problematizou: qual a situação dos/as estudantes em termos de acesso à Internet e aos equipamentos disponíveis para a participação de aulas on-line durante a fase mais aguda da Covid-19? Submetido: 05.02.2021 Aceite: 21.05.202
