The other side of funerals and cemeteries. Reflections from the Plenary Session’s chair (Part I)
This article takes a brief theoretical and reflective look at Rafaela Ferraz\u27s plenary session at the XXX Conference. The theme of the speaker\u27s session was the counterfactual history of the tradition of funerals and burials in Portugal, the main aim of which was to imagine an alternative scenario in which cremation had been institutionalised as a practice earlier in the country. We started from this motto and questioned cemeteries as cultural landscapes, taking up the counter-narrative discourse in relation to cremation, but we also expanded our approach by looking at funeral cards, analysing them - albeit briefly - as memorabilia.
Global citizenship education has become one of the educational priorities of the 21st century. Still, academic research suggests that global citizenship education is not systematically embedded in teachers’ practice. Addressing this context, this paper reports on a qualitative multiple-case study developed with seven teacher educators and four pre-service teachers at a Portuguese university. The study aims to analyse and compare the impact of two development programmes on teachers’ conceptualisations of global citizenship education and their teaching identities. Data were collected from audio recordings and individual reflections, which were treated using deductive content analysis. Results show that both groups of teachers developed clearer conceptualisations of global citizenship aligned with a liberal orientation and (re)constructed their teaching identities to (re)consider the demands of the teaching profession in a globalised world. Nonetheless, teachers highlighted the complexity of this transformative form of education, mentioning that they need more time and support to incorporate it into their skillset and mindset. These findings suggest the need to strive for ‘brave’ teacher education for global citizenship, whose tenets are presented in this article.
In July 2022, Porto hosted an international EDULOG conference on teacher education under the challenging theme: “Teacher Education: Building an Agenda for the 21st Century”. The primary motive behind organising this conference was the collective acknowledgement, within both the international and educational communities, of the profound challenges facing present and future education. There was a shared conviction that teacher education is pivotal in advancing education. Teacher educators[1], whether in higher education institutions or schools, are tasked with educating all teachers, thereby indirectly influencing the teaching practices of all educators and the learning experiences of all students. It is an immense and highly responsible undertaking.

The study analyzed the impacts of the pandemic on children and adolescents, the target audience for specialized educational services (AEE) and their families and caregivers. Descriptive cross-sectional study, with data collected from 97 guardians in a city in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil. The researchers used a form they developed, and the data were analyzed statistically, considering p >= 0.05. Results point to differences in the profile and changes occurring in teaching between public and private students concerning support from health and education professionals and technological infrastructure. Regarding pedagogical issues, most participants reported problems related to low adherence to distance learning and the institution’s conduct, materials and resources offered. Challenges for parents and caregivers were revealed in the form of emotional exhaustion and changes in routine, with associations to the type of school, degree of difficulty, number of people living in the house, degree of disability of the child/adolescent, and difficulty in accepting the role of educator. These results suggest that families and caregivers were impacted by the pandemic, affecting the care tasks and education of these children and adolescents.O estudo analisou impactos da pandemia em crianças e adolescentes, público-alvo do atendimento educacional especializado (AEE), e em seus familiares e cuidadores/as.
In July 2022 Gert Biesta gave an invited keynote lecture at the 2022 EDULOG International Conference on Teacher Education: Building an Agenda for the 21st Century in Porto, Portugal[1]. In the following interview Gert Biesta shares key ideas from his lecture, particularly highlighting that any discussion about the future of teacher education needs to start from a meaningful understanding of education and the important role of the teacher. In his lecture Biesta made a case for understanding teaching as an art rather than an applied science, and made the interesting suggestion that we should see teaching as a double art. This suggests that teacher education that understands that teaching is an art, and not the application of rules and recipes, needs to work with students to develop their teacherly artistry. Such a future for teacher education is quite different from the idea that teaching should be a profession based upon or informed by scientific evidence about what works. The main problem with that idea, so Biesta makes clear in this interview, is that looking for evidence about what works misunderstands what education is and what the work of the teacher entails.

This paper is based on reflections on my understanding of international summer schools, drawing from my personal experiences while participating in one of them, which took place in a European country in 2021. I argue that international summer schools can play an important role as an international academic forum in the practice of inclusive education for doctoral students and early career researchers from various perspectives. I use the model of three levels of inclusion advanced by Qvortrup and Qvortrup to justify my arguments in this autoethnographic study. I discuss the study methodology and provide an overview of the timetable followed by the international summer school that I attended. Then, I argue how it provided an inclusive learning experience to the participant students from numeric/physical, social, and psychological perspectives. I conclude by observing that international summer schools need to utilise their transnational nature to initiate race-sensitive, culturally responsive discussions among their participant students. This approach will help to create critical cultural awareness among its students, trying to give a clear picture of the intercultural makeup of the world as it exists.
