Pode a educação atenuar o crescimento do populismo e da extrema-direita? : O papel da escolaridade e das experiências educacionais na construção da democracia
Get PDFToday’s democratic systems face several challenges – populism, polarisation and de-democratisation – threatening their functioning and vitality. These dangers underline the need to reflect on the importance of education, mainly in formal educational contexts, in mitigating the spread of antidemocratic, populist and exclusionary positions. Data from a surveyed sample of 1047 young adults (aged 18-30) show that educational attainment and experiences of a democratic educational climate play a fundamental role in developing more democratic, inclusive and pluralistic attitudes. Concretely, those two educational variables hold a significant ideological role: lower levels of educational attainment are associated with more right-wing ideological positions and extreme right-wing young adults report less democratic university experiences. Additionally, the results show that more democratic university experiences mediate the relationship between democratic support and greater trust in political institutions. Likewise, such experiences mitigate the role of populist attitudes in institutional distrust. Therefore, it is essential to discuss the democratic and political role of schools and universities from a contextual and processual perspective.Os atuais sistemas democráticos enfrentam uma série de desafios – populismo, polarização e desdemocratização – que ameaçam o seu funcionamento e vitalidade. Estes perigos acentuam a necessidade de se pensar na importância da educação, nomeadamente dos contextos de educação formal, para atenuar a proliferação de posicionamentos antidemocráticos, populistas e excludentes. Os dados de um inquérito por questionário respondido por 1047 jovens-adultos/as (18-30 anos) mostram que o grau de escolaridade e a vivência de um clima educacional democrático têm um papel fundamental no desenvolvimento de atitudes mais democráticas, inclusivas e plurais. Concretamente, essas duas variáveis educacionais têm um papel ideológico significativo: menores níveis de escolaridade estão associados a posicionamentos ideológicos mais à direita e os/as jovens-adultos/as de extrema-direita reportam vivências universitárias menos democráticas. Adicionalmente, os resultados mostram que a relação entre o apoio à democracia e uma maior confiança nas instituições políticas é mediada por experiências universitárias mais democráticas. Do mesmo modo, este tipo de experiências atenuam o papel das atitudes populistas na desconfiança institucional. Com efeito, é imprescindível discutir o papel democrático e político das escolas e das universidades a partir da sua dimensão contextual e processual

O envolvimento de candidatos a doutoramento em redes de investigadores/as e as principais experiências de aprendizagem nelas incorporadas
Get PDFResearcher networks are highly important for a positive PhD experience and the future career of PhD candidates in and beyond academia. Our study explores PhD candidates’ engagement in researcher networks, ranging from the local to the global sphere, the key learning experiences embedded in them, and how such engagement is associated with their doctoral thesis format, research group status, and the candidate’s country of origin. A total of 768 PhD candidates from a research-intensive multidisciplinary Finnish university participated. The data were collected through a doctoral experience survey. The results showed that PhD candidates participate widely in research collaboration activities, especially by presenting at conferences and participating in international summer schools. Most learning experiences were located in local networks. Some differences between the candidates were found related to the thesis format, research group status, and candidates’ country of origin. Our study provides a new understanding of PhD candidates’ researcher networks, and the results can be used in the development of support systems in doctoral education to enhance PhD candidates’ research collaboration locally and globally.As redes de pesquisadores são essenciais para uma experiência positiva de doutoramento e para a futura carreira dos/as candidatos/as na e para além da academia. Este estudo investiga o envolvimento de candidatos/as ao doutoramento em redes de investigadores/as, do local ao global, as suas experiências-chave e a associação com o formato da tese, estatuto do grupo de pesquisa e país de origem. Um total de 768 candidatos de uma universidade finlandesa multidisciplinar participaram no estudo. Os dados foram coletados no âmbito de uma pesquisa de experiência de doutoramento. Os resultados indicam uma ampla participação dos/as candidatos/as em atividades colaborativas, especialmente apresentações em conferências e participação em escolas de verão internacionais. Experiências positivas estavam mais frequentemente ligadas a redes internacionais, enquanto experiências negativas foram associadas a redes locais de pesquisadores/as. Algumas diferenças foram encontradas relacionadas com o formato da tese, estatuto do grupo de pesquisa e país de origem. Este estudo fornece uma nova compreensão das redes de pesquisadores/as de candidatos/as ao doutoramento, podendo ser útil ao desenvolvimento de sistemas de apoio para aprimorar a colaboração em pesquisa local e globalmente na educação doutoral
Artistically expressing the oppressed: Framing Contemporary Printmaking and for its technological past

This paper aims to demonstrate how art-based research can propose alternative readings in History through the study of the technological past of printmaking. Our focus scope will be lithography, the art of printing from stone, as we’ll be highlighting how the technique developed parallel with power structures from the 19th-century, serving Europe’s interests in colonisation by increasing the number of printed maps. In a very practical sense, map-printing depended on many participants: those who drew, those who prepared the printing matrixes and those who printed. What if we gave a voice to the people who were producing such maps? What would these say of the conditions of their labour? What would their stories be, and what would be their opinions on the application of maps to warfare? Our reflection is based upon concrete case studies of historical cartography produced in 19th-century Portugal, which are stored in the archives of the University of Porto
