    Get PDF
Quercetin, an abundant flavonoid in various foods and plants, exhibits diverse therapeutic potential due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. This review explores its biological and pharmacological activities, mechanisms of action, formulations, absorption, bioavailability, adverse effects, and potential therapeutic applications.Initially isolated in the 1800s as a dye and in 1936 as a polyphenol, quercetin has garnered attention for its antioxidant capabilities, particularly in preventing oxidative damage from low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Studies also suggest its efficacy in lowering blood glucose levels, improving insulin sensitivity, and inhibiting viral infections, including COVID-19.Despite its promising benefits, quercetin’s bioavailability is limited by factors such as poor water solubility and rapid metabolism. Researchers have explored various formulations and delivery systems, including quercetin glycosides, nano-formulations, and phytosomes, to enhance quercetin’s absorption and effectiveness. While generally considered safe, high doses of quercetin supplements may lead to gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, and tingling sensation. Furthermore, its interaction with other medications warrants further investigation.Quercetin has therapeutic advantages in CVDs, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative disorders, respiratory conditions, skeletal conditions, bacterial and fungal infections, cancer, diabetes, iron-induced toxicity, oxidative stress, and viral infections. However, research in humans is limited, and optimal dosage and formulations remain to be established.Quercetin’s diverse pharmacological activities make it a promising therapeutic agent for various conditions, disorders, and diseases. Future research should focus on standardizing formulations, investigating long-term safety, elucidating mechanisms of action, and clarifying interactions with other medications to optimize quercetin’s therapeutic use

    Get PDF
Research goal: The goal of this research is to create a prediction model for a possible outcome (death or survival) of COVID-19, which model incorporates the easily available radio diagnostic methods such as classical radiology and the disease scoring system. Part of the goal of this study is to define the chances and probabilities of occurrence of death as a result of the primary disease and to identify the risk factors that have the highest influence on the final outcome of COVID-19. Methodology: The methodological approach used in this study is the binary logistic regression which is part of the group of generalized linear statistical methods. Results: Results show that patients with complications and comorbidities have the highest chances of death from COVID-19 (OR 16,53 with CI 8,21 - 33,25 and 4,08 with CI 1,34 - 12,38). Men are also exposed to higher but insignificant mortality risk with OR 1,55 with CI 0,86 - 2,80. Every additional year of age increases the mortality risks by 1,06 times (CI 1,03 - 1,09), while every additional score of the primary disease leads to increased chances of unwanted outcome by 1,24 (CI 1,04 - 1,47). Conclusion: The mortality outcome of COVID-19 is not an exclusive consequence of the primary disease but it is usually determined in correlation with different comorbidities and existing complications as well as other standard influencing factors such as age and gender. Contribution and significance of the research: The primary importance of this research is the fact that it allows for an improved precision and upgrade to the basic model of standard factors by using new predictors, specifically secondary complications from the radio-graphic picture and scoring of the primary disease, which leads to higher utilization of cheap and easily available radio-diagnostic methods

Social Causes of Abortion in Tanzania

    Get PDF
The article "Social Causes of Abortion in Tanzania" explores the multifaceted social factors contributing to abortion rates in the country. It highlights the interplay of cultural, educational, and systemic challenges that influence the decision to terminate a pregnancy. Juvenile delinquency and truancy, compounded by a lack of comprehensive sex education, create an environment where adolescents are ill-prepared to navigate sexual health. The pressures of academic achievement further complicate this landscape, as many young people feel compelled to prioritize schooling over parenting. Limited access to reproductive health services exacerbates the issue, with many women unable to obtain necessary information or support.Fear of stigma and discrimination plays a crucial role, as societal attitudes towards single motherhood and abortion lead to social exclusion and negative stereotypes, increasing the burdens felt by women. Additionally, peer pressure, along with familial and relationship dynamics, such as pressure from boyfriends or physicians, further complicates personal decision-making. The article also discusses the implications of timing and the physician's role in oversimplifying abortion procedures, contributing to the dilemma faced by women. By examining these intertwined social causes, the article aims to shed light on the broader societal context influencing abortion in Tanzania, ultimately calling for more inclusive policies and support systems that address these pressing issues. Through a deeper understanding of these factors, stakeholders can better advocate for reproductive and comprehensive health education, fostering a more supportive environment for the lives of women and youth

It is a chronic ailment without a cure, and poses a significant threat to women's health, with many going women untreated.Aims: Many women in Bangladesh lack knowledge about PCOS, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. This gap hinders the understanding of coping strategies, treatment options, and lifestyle improvements related to this condition. Methods: In total, 426 participants were included in this mixed methods study, and data were collected via a mixed-methods approach. A standard approach was used for the assessment of among Bangladeshi people’s knowledge about PCOS signs, and symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment options, and impacts on health. The prevalence of diagnostic tests among people and the extent to which women are underdiagnosed were also determined. Results: A positive PCOS status had a significantly negative impact on mental health conditions. The knowledge levels about PCOS among participants were low (63.7%), moderate (21.6%), or high (14.7%). We found significant associations between knowledge level and age, education, occupation, place of residence, screening practices, and PCOS status (p-value <0.05). Notably, 63.4% of women in Bangladesh remain undiagnosed and have a symptomatic appearance. Conclusion: A significant number of women have limited knowledge about PCOS. Moreover, these studies failed to assess PCOS status, even though the prevalence of PCOS is more than thirty percent. Hence, it is important to arrange a health education initiative aimed at educating and encouraging women to actively engage in the diagnostic process to prevent PCOS complications
