    Get PDF
Advancements in understanding brain function combined with technology have unleashed enormous benefits to the disabled and even able-bodied persons. The evolution of utilizing brain signals to communicate with or control various computerized devices has proven to be effective in the world of medicine as well as other industries such as gaming, robotics, military, and work environments. Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) represent a cutting-edge technology enabling machine control through thought. Though most wearable devices employ EEG-based technologies, current research is going into a method known as fNRIS. However, despite proven advantages, challenges are yet to be resolved. Costs, extensive training requirements, exposure to potential cyberattacks, security, and privacy issues are being researched. However, greater study in each area is required to fully realize the vast benefits of this combination of science and technology but with consideration to lowering related risks. This paper discusses what we currently know and the potential of this knowledge but also exposes what we don’t know, encouraging more extensive study and testing

This study was designed to determine the Prevalence and Determinants of Sexual Harassment Among Athletes in South-South States Sports Council in Nigeria. Two specific objectives, two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The population for the study comprised of 1,647 male and 1,274 female athletes. They give a total of 2,921 sports athletes in South-South Sports Council which spread across the six states. The sample size of the study consisted of 336 male and 262 female athletes giving a total of 598 representing 20% of athletes from each of the state Sport Council. Instrument titled “Victims Attitude and Isolation as a determinant of Sexual Harassment of Athletes Questionnaire (VAIDSHAQ)” was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three research experts, all from the University of Uyo. Instrument was trial tested on 20 athletes who were not part of the research sample. Cronbach Alpha Reliability Statistics and reliability co-efficient of 0.98 was obtained. The data was analysed using simple regression to answer research questionswhile the hypothesis was tested using F-ratio in simple linear regressionat .05 levels of significance. The prevalence of victim attitudes and isolations from sexual partners are determined of sexual harassments among athletes. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended among measures that individuals with records of sexual abuse should not be admitted into the sport council in order to avoid repetition of such act. Also, that victims of sexual harassment who refuse to report the incidence should be sanctioned by the sport council when noticed

Complicated Appendicitis in Children: Current Management. Review Article

    Get PDF
Complicated appendicitis in children is a challenging condition to treat and the treatment options that are available include conservative treatment followed by interval appendectomy and immediate appendectomy. Both these treatment options are effective but as there is no consensus on the management of complicated appendicitis, the treatment option is often decided by the treating surgeon. We have conducted this review article to look at the treatment options that are available, from conservative treatment to immediate appendectomy. We have also looked at the role of percutaneous drainage of appendicular abscess and the role of interval appendectomy

Introduction: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2 billion people, or 30% of the world's population, are affected by anaemia. In low- and middle-income countries, the prevalence of anaemia is highest among women of reproductive age and young children, with estimates suggesting that up to 60% of pregnant women and nearly 50% of preschool children suffer from anaemia.Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the haemopoietic parameters of four traditionally used blood building plants; Justicia carnea, Jathropha tanjorensis, Sorghum bicolor and Tetracera alnifolia; whose anti-anaemic parameters have not been compared.Method: The crude extracts were obtained by macerating 100g of each plant sample in methanol and dichloromethane, followed by concentrating the extracts using a rotary evaporator and drying in a desiccator. Phytochemical screening, elemental analysis, vitamin B3, B6, B12 analysis and GC-MS were carried out on the plant samples; J. tanjorensis, J. carnea, S. bicolor and T. alnifolia. Results: Phytochemical screening showed the presence of Triterpenoids, Flavonoids, Tannins, saponins, Phlobatamins, Anthraquinones, Cardiac glycosides, Steroids, Carbohydrates, and proteins. GC-MS analysis revealed some compounds. Conclusion: A comparison of the concentrations of the mineral and vitamins analysed revealed that J. tanjorensis had high concentrations of copper, iron and zinc, but was not statistically significant compared to the other plants investigated. The results obtained from the analysis of the vitamins, showed that Sorghum bicolor had high concentrations of vitamins: B3, B6 and B12 to the plants. Also. vitamin B3 was significantly higher at p<0.05 in Sorghum bicolor. The findings from this study showed that the investigated plants are suitable candidates for the development of blood building medications and their use in traditional settings as blood tonics is warranted. Furthermore, Sorghum bicolor is the most promising of the four medicinal plants as a candidate for further therapeutic studies

    Get PDF
Serous cystadenoma is a rare benign cystic lesion of the pancreas, predominantly affecting women with a mean age of onset around 62 years. While often asymptomatic, it can manifest with nonspecific symptoms such as abdominal pain and nausea. We present the case of a 68-year-old woman with abdominal pain and nausea, diagnosed with a serous cystadenoma in the tail of the pancreas through imaging modalities. Radiological examinations revealed a septated, multilayered cystic lesion with lobulated contour and calcifications. Surgical resection was performed, and pathological examination confirmed a serous cystadenoma. Differential diagnosis from pseudocysts and malignant serous cystadenocarcinomas is crucial. Treatment options include pancreatic resection, with close monitoring recommended for asymptomatic patients or those at high surgical risk. Despite their benign nature, accurate diagnosis and management of serous cystadenomas are essential

Hypertension is one of the most common causes of death worldwide; and a common cause of cardiovascular and renal complications which can be frequent, chronic and age related. Use of antihypertensive drugs such as Lisinopril and Amlodipine which have no significant first pass effects, pose a threat to the kidney. This study aimed at comparing the effects of conventional antihypertensive drugs Lisinopril and Amlodipine with Moringa oleifera on the kidney of Albino rats using Urea and Creatinine as markers. A total of 30 Albino rats were divided into six groups. Group I served as negative control; Group II as positive control; Groups III, IV, V and VI were test groups. They were induced hypertension with Dexamethasone-salt and treated with 0.07mg/kg body weight Lisinopril, 0.27mg/kg Amlodipine and with 20mg/kg and 40mg/kg Moringa oleifera leaves capsules respectively. At the end of treatment which lasted for 3 weeks, the animals were sacrificed and blood samples collected into clean-dry containers and serum harvested; and used to measure the levels of Urea and Creatinine with Chemistry auto-analyzer (COBAS C111). Data obtained were analysed using statistical package for the social sciences (IBM-SPSS) version 27.0. The results indicated no significant increase in serum Urea and insignificant decrease in Creatinine in all the treatment groups. This indicates synergy in these classes of antihypertensive drugs and Moringa at the said concentrations. Based on these results, it can be concluded that Moringa oleifera leaves extract could be used complementarily with Lisinopril and Amlodipine for treatment and management of hypertension
