    No full text
The use of restraints in psychiatric care remains a sensitive intervention that requires a balance between patient safety and ethical responsibility. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of applying restraints to psychiatric patients among 4th-year B.Sc. Nursing students at Smt. Nagarathnamma College of Nursing, Bengaluru. A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted, and a structured self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 70 participants. The tool included demographic items and 30 knowledge-based questions. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to identify knowledge levels and associations with selected demographic variables. Findings revealed that 47.1% of students demonstrated adequate knowledge, 35.7% had moderate knowledge, and 17.1% displayed inadequate knowledge regarding restraint application. The mean knowledge score was 17.36 (SD = 6.78), with scores ranging from 4 to 27. A statistically significant association was observed between socioeconomic status and knowledge levels (p = 0.025), while no significant relationship was found with other demographic factors. The study concludes that while a majority of students possess moderate to adequate knowledge, gaps remain that may impact patient care. Strengthening the nursing curriculum through simulation-based learning, ethical and legal training, and de-escalation strategies is essential to prepare future nurses for safe, patient-centered psychiatric care. These findings highlight the importance of targeted education to minimize inappropriate restraint use and ensure adherence to professional standards and patient rights

Background: Self-esteem and academic achievement are two important developmental determinants during adolescence. High self-esteem is often associated with motivation, resilience, and improved learning outcomes. However, findings across contexts remain inconsistent. Objective: To examine the relationship between self-esteem and academic achievement among adolescents and to identify associations with selected socio- demographic variables. Methods: A non-experimental correlational design was adopted. Thirty adolescents (9th and 10th standard) were selected by simple random sampling from R C International High School, Bangalore. Socio-demographic data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale assessed self-esteem, and academic achievement was measured using the average percentage scores from the previous year’s examinations. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson’s correlation, chi-square test). Results: The majority of participants (83.3%) reported normal self-esteem, while 16.7% had high self-esteem. Nearly half (46.7%) secured A+ grades in academics. Correlation analysis indicated no significant relationship between self- esteem and academic achievement (r = –0.220, p = 0.242). Gender was significantly associated with both self-esteem (χ2 = 5.88, p = 0.015) and academic achievement (χ2 = 13.14, p = 0.001). No other socio-demographic variables were significantly related. Conclusion: The study concluded that self-esteem and academic achievement were not significantly correlated among adolescents. However, gender emerged as a significant factor influencing both variables. The findings suggest the need for gender- sensitive interventions in academic and mental health promotion programs for adolescents

Gonorrhea, caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, remains a major public health concern due to increasing antimicrobial resistance and insufficient awareness among health professionals. This study aimed to assess the knowledge regarding prevention and management of gonorrhea among 4th- year B.Sc. Nursing students in a selected college. A descriptive research design was adopted, and data were collected from 50 students using a structured self-administered questionnaire consisting of demographic variables and 30 knowledge-based questions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, mean, and percentage, along with chi-square tests to explore associations between knowledge and demographic factors. Results showed that the majority of students (82%) had average knowledge, 18% demonstrated poor knowledge, and none attained good knowledge of gonorrhea prevention and management. The mean knowledge score was 11.38 out of 30 (37.9%), indicating moderate awareness with significant variability across participants. Among socio-demographic variables, only religion demonstrated a statistically significant association with knowledge levels, while age, locality, family type, and previous sources of information did not. The findings highlight substantial knowledge gaps among nursing students and emphasize the need for structured educational interventions to strengthen awareness, improve competencies, and enhance the integration of sexually transmitted infection content into nursing curricula. By addressing these gaps, future nurses can be better prepared to contribute effectively to gonorrhea prevention, patient education, and public health promotion

Comparative Study to Identify the Effectiveness Between Flipped Classroom Teaching and Traditional Method among First Year GNM Students in Selected College

    No full text
Teaching methods greatly influence how well students understand and retain knowledge, especially in nursing, where both theory and practical skills are vital. Traditionally, nursing education has relied on lectures and note-taking, which often promote passive learning and limit students’ ability to apply knowledge critically. To address these limitations, innovative strategies such as the flipped classroom are being explored. In this model, students review learning materials—like videos or readings—before class, while classroom sessions focus on discussions, problem-solving, and activities that deepen understanding. This learner-centered approach encourages active participation, critical thinking, and greater responsibility for learning. For nursing students, who face challenges in linking theory to practice, the flipped classroom may provide a more flexible and meaningful way to learn. However, evidence comparing its effectiveness to traditional teaching in nursing remains limited. Hence, this study aims to evaluate both approaches to determine which better supports nursing students’ learning outcomes

Self-care is essential for nursing students as it supports their physical, emotional, and mental well-being, enabling them to deliver effective patient care. However, limited knowledge and irregular practice of self-care can negatively affect health and academic performance. This study assessed the effectiveness of video-assisted teaching (VAT) in improving knowledge regarding self-care practices among first-year General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) students at Smt. Nagarathnamma School of Nursing, Bangalore. A pre-experimental one-group pre- test post-test design was used with 54 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The pre-test revealed 31.5% of students had inadequate knowledge, 7.4% had moderately adequate knowledge, and 61.1% had adequate knowledge. After the VAT intervention, 98.1% achieved adequate knowledge, and none remained in the inadequate category. The mean knowledge score improved significantly from 17.87 (SD = 7.29) to 24.03 (SD = 1.37), with a paired t-test showing statistical significance (p < 0.001). Age was significantly associated with baseline knowledge, while gender, income, and socio-economic status were not. The study concludes that video-assisted teaching is an effective strategy for enhancing nursing students’ knowledge of self-care. Integrating multimedia teaching methods into nursing curricula can promote healthier lifestyles and strengthen students’ preparedness for professional practice

Adolescence is a critical phase of identity formation, and assertiveness plays a vital role in shaping healthy communication and self-esteem. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of assertiveness training on the level of assertive behavior among late adolescent girls aged 18–21 years. A pre- experimental one-group pre test post-test design was adopted, involving 60 first and second-year B.Sc. Nursing students from Smt. Nagarathnamma College of Nursing, Bengaluru. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Assertive behavior was measured using a modified Rathus Assertiveness Schedule. Before the intervention, 25% of participants showed low assertiveness, while 75% demonstrated moderate levels. The assertiveness training program included interactive sessions, role-plays, and group discussions aimed at building confidence and respectful self- expression. After the training, 91.7% of participants exhibited moderate assertiveness, and 1.7% reached a high level. The mean assertiveness score increased from 33.73 (SD = 5.20) to 36.43 (SD = 4.58), with a statistically significant improvement (t = -3.302, p = 0.002). The findings suggest that assertiveness training is a powerful tool for empowering adolescent girls, helping them navigate social and academic environments with greater confidence and clarity. Integrating such programs into educational settings can foster healthier interpersonal relationships and support emotional well- being during a formative stage of life. Many entered the program unsure of how to speak up, set boundaries, or express themselves confidently. By the end, they were not just scoring higher on assertiveness scales they were standing taller, communicating more clearly, and showing up for themselves in ways they hadn’t before

Long-term economic viability and social development can be influenced by public health outcomes. Data analytic and machine learning methods are used to identify factors influencing public health due to the increasing availability of health-related data. This paper explores the key factors determining life expectancy using an open-source Life Expectancy dataset‚ to create an avenue for data driven public healthcare decisions. Exploratory data analysis is used to show the correlation between adult mortality‚ infant mortality‚ gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and schooling and their effect on life expectancy. Random Forest‚ Support Vector Regression (SVR)‚ and XGBoost are three different machine learning models that show that the proposed ensemble models are efficient in predicting life expectancy. The 3 models are XGBoost with R-squared of 0.998‚ Random Forest with R-squared of 0.997 and Support Vector Regression with R-squared of 0.980. The 3 most important features in prediction of life expectancy are under-five deaths‚ adult deaths and infant deaths. The study shows that predictive analytics can be a useful tool to assist policy makers to improve public health and sustainable economic growth

Management of Pregnancy in a Non-Communicating Rudimentary Horn with Placenta Accreta Spectrum: A Case Report

Introduction: The non-communicating rudimentary horn is a rare uterine malformation, and pregnancy in this horn is exceptional. Diagnosing pregnancy in a rudimentary horn is challenging, particularly in asymptomatic patients; it is often discovered in the second trimester, usually at the stage of uterine rupture with hemoperitoneum.Clinical Case: We report the case of a 21-year-old nulliparous woman referred for management of a 24-week amenorrhea pregnancy that had stopped growing at 15 weeks on a bicornuate uterus. The patient presented no clinical symptoms, and biological examinations were normal. Pelvic ultrasound revealed a 12 cm gravid right uterine cavity with a 14-week fetus without cardiac activity. The left horn was deviated and empty. Communication between the two horns could not be confirmed. Hysteroscopy confirmed the presence of a single permeable cavity (the left) connected to the cervix; laparoscopy confirmed the diagnosis of pregnancy in a rudimentary horn with a high likelihood of placenta accreta spectrum and allowed for the resection of this horn. The postoperative course was unremarkable, and the anatomopathological examination confirmed the placenta accreta spectrum
