    SCIENTIFIC ARGUMENTATION AND COOPERATIVE LEARNING: WHY SHOULD THEY BE COMBINED?

    Cooperative learning and scientific argumentation are two contemporary topics in educational literature. The claim made in this paper is that the two concepts support and fulfill each other. Cooperative learning takes place when students work in groups and share information based on alternative ways of thinking. Too often, however, the group discussion does not stimulate alternative views, and students too quickly fall into a common and narrow way of thinking, because of leading group dominance, and the guarding of given material (text book) influence. This is still cooperative learning, but of less value. The most valuable learning happens when students put forward multiple views based on their different background and personal theories, in addition to; the given materials and this enhances students challenge each other in real debates. In this way of learning, students act similar to scientists, historians, mathematicians and other academics, because all academic debates are based on argument about contrasting views. Debate about contrasting views, however, is also the fundamental idea in teaching based on scientific argumentation. The basis for the claim of the paper, accordingly, is that scientific argumentation, as a means (pedagogy), can be used to stimulate meaningful cooperative learning by encouraging contrasts and variation in students’ thinking. And the other way, that cooperative learning is a useful perspective that can help and guide teachers who want to use scientific argumentation in the teaching. The aim of the paper is therefore to combine the two concepts in a common rationale for science teaching using analytical review. The paper was first analyse cooperative learning and scientific argumentation in more details separately, and from these analyses conclude with similarities and differences in pedagogically and in nature of science to underlying rationales. Next, the paper was merging the two perspectives into a common rationale to guide science teaching

    The menstrual cycle is the regular natural change that occurs in the system, specifically the uterus and ovaries that makes pregnancy possible. The menstrual cycle consists of the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase. The median duration of a menstrual cycle is 28 days with most cycle lengths between 25 to 30 days. Ovulation takes place in med of cycle and Fertilization occurs after ovulation in fallopian tube. A sperm alive 4 days after discharged in female reproductive tract and ova survive 2 day after ovulation. So fertilization occurs almost at days 11th to 18th, rest days are called safe period. A disrupted cycle around the time of travelling is usually significant in relation to overall menstrual health. Climatic variations affects on woman menstrual cycles. In nearly 50% of cases the exact cause of congenital anomaly could not be identified, although there are some known risk factors which can be linked with the causation of malformation. Congenital anomalies can be caused by single gene defects, chromosomal disorders, multi-factorial inheritance and environmental factors. In a disrupted menstrual cycle, the day of ovulation varies and delay ovulation may be lead to congenital birth defect

    ISLAMIC BANK SAVINGS CUSTOMER RETENTION: IN TERMS OF THE SERVICE MARKETING MIX

    The main goal of every business is to create and retain customers. But many companies are more concerned with creating new customers than the retention of existing customers. Though, by the increase in customer retention can increase long-term profits. This research was aimed to analyze the effects of service marketing mix on customer retention of Islamic banking saving accounts in Pekanbaru. The research was conducted quantitatively with causal and descriptive research design. The amounts of sample are 154 customers of several Islamic banks by using a purposive sampling method. The data collection technique used in this research were surveys and observations. The data analysis technique used is Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results showed that all dimensions of service marketing mix affect significantly positive toward customer retention except for price, place and physical evidence variable. &nbsp

    PREVALENCE OF VITAMIN A DEFICIENCY, SCLERAL MELANOCYTOSIS, TOOTH DECAY AND SKIN INFECTION AMONG RURAL PRESCHOOL CHILDREN IN MULSHI TEHSIL, M/S, INDIA

    In present study, a village survey was carried out in rural areas of Mulshi Tehsil with the aim of assessing health related problems among the rural preschool children. Clinical examinations were carried out on 527 preschool children for various health issues. Their data was collected and analyzed to find the prevalence of Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) and other common health issues like tooth decay, skin diseases, etc. These health issues might be due to illiteracy about hygiene, sanitation, exposure to humid atmosphere due to heavy rainfall in the study area, consumption of unfiltered borewell water for drinking, etc. The high humidity and improper sanitation leads to growth of harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and/or other microbes. The present survey revealed 12.3% prevalence of VAD which includes 2% Night blindness, 2.5% xerophthalmia, 4% Bitot spots and 3.8% conjunctival xerosis among these preschool children. The other health issues observed among were 4.5% scleral melanocytosis, 2.7% tooth decay and 5.3% skin diseases

    IMPACT OF PARALIMNETIC MACROFLORA ON BACTERIAL POPULATIONS OF A TROPICAL FRESHWATER LAKE

    Phytochemicals are playing some metabolic role and control development in living systems. They are also protective function in animals and are used as medicine especially, the steroidal alkaloids. The plant species Acacia nilotica indica is an indigenous plant in most of the South Indian freshwater lakes. The plant species provides enormous ecological and economical values. In the present study area Vellode Lake, Acacia nilotica indica is the most dominated plant species. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct phyto-chemical analysis of the plant species to find its chemical constitution and its impact on the ecosystem. Based on the standard methods of extraction, extracts of the leaves, bark and fruits are prepared and used for further qualitative and quantitative analysis. Parameters including pH, total phenols, alkaloids, saphonins, total flavonoids, total nitrogen, total phosphates, total potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium of the plants parts were estimated. By the help of HPLC analysis presence of the major alkaloids like Dimethyl tryptamine, N- Methyl tryptamine, 5- Methoxy dimethyl tryptamine, Dimethyl tryptamine and flavonoids like 6,8 -bis C,B,D gluiopyranoside, (+) Catechin- 4,5 digallate, Melacacidin, (+) Catechin- 5,7 digallate, Quercetin 3-O-rutinoside, Melacacidin and 1,2 - Dimethyl benza antracene of the plant species were detected. Dominant bacterial species were isolated from the lake soil, water and bird droppings. The dominant bacterial bacteria species of the lake are Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Streptococcai sp. and Clostridium sp. Antibacterial tests were conducted with the plant extracts. The results were clearly indicated the great amount of antibacterial potential of Acaci nilotica indica. Thus, the present study demonstrate the natural efficiency of the lake ecosystem against the pathogenic bacterial population

    TWO PHASE UPFLOW ANAEROBIC SLUDGE BLANKET (UASB) REACTOR ON THE REDUCTION OF CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND IN DAIRY EFFLUENT

    An increasing pollution level leads to realization of the potential of anaerobic treatment. This led to the development of a range of reactor designs suitable for the treatment of low, medium and high strength waste water. With the increasing use of anaerobic technology for treating various process streams, it is expected that industries would become more economically competitive because of their more judicious use of natural resources. One of the most developments in anaerobic treatment process technology was the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactors. The reactor is being used extensively for a large number of different types of industrial effluents. Prevention and reduction of dairy waste water pollution can be achieved by means of direct recycling and reutilization of waste components. This study examined the feasibility of applying Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket bioreactor with phase separation i.e. acidogenesis and methanogenensis, to treat dairy effluent. The aim of the study is developing anaerobic digestion as a two-phase process originated from the view that it is generally a process involving two different set of activities. The two reactors were constructed in transparent acrylic sheet.  The dimension of the acidogenic reactor was 18 cm width, 18 cm breadth and 50 cm height. In the present study, the better performance of the reactors than the reactors reported by other investigators can be attributed to two reasons.  One definite reason is the phase separation. In the present study, the high chemical oxygen demand removal rate achieved at a hydraulic retention time 2 days for the acidogenic reactor at an OLR rate of 4.01-4.21 kg chemical oxygen demand /m3/day and in the methanogenic reactor hydraulic retention time of 2.5 days at an organic loading rate 2.61-2.75 kg chemical oxygen demand. The results indicate that a sharp decrease in the chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency for loads above 2-4 g chemical oxygen demand /l/day in the operation of sludge bed anaerobic reactors fed with dairy effluents. Among the anaerobic treatment two phase Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor work efficiently to treat also to mitigate the issue of acidification nature of dairy effluent

    BIOGENIC SYNTHESIS OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES FROM MANGROVE PLANT Lumnitzera racemosa AND ITS PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING & ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY

    Recent advancements in nanotechnology based compounds have opened a new horizon for combating multi drug resistance in microorganisms. In particular, the use of silver nanoparticles as a potent for antibacterial agent has focused much attention. Silver nanoparticles exhibit their antimicrobial abilities through multifaceted mechanisms. Silver nanoparticles adhesive to microbial cells, penetration inside the cells, and modulation of the microbial signal transduction pathways have been recognized as the most empirical mode of antimicrobial action. Therefore, an attempt was made to produce silver nanoparticles having physicochemical properties. Thus, eco-friendly, non-toxic silver nanoparticles were green synthesized using the leaf extract of Lumnitzera racemosa and its phytochemical screening & antibacterial activity were carried out against clinical pathogens. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by a change in extract color from dark green to brown and surface Plasmon resonance spectra obtained at the range of approximately 537 nm. The antibacterial activity of the green synthesized silver nanoparticles against bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae using well diffusion method. The results of antimicrobial activity by the well diffusion assay also clearly expressed that test extract have high concentration of active principles. The aqueous leaf extract of Lumnitzera racemosa shows the presence of   phytochemical   compounds   such   as   alkaloids,   flavonoids,   glycosides,   phenols,   saponins, tannins   and   terpenoids

    HEAVY METALS OCCURRENCE IN THE TISSUES OF MARINE PRAWN Penaeus monodon (FABRICIUS 1798) AND WATER ALONG THE COASTLINE OF TAMIL NADU (CHENNAI)

    This current study aimed to gauge the cluster of heavy metals, Copper, chromium, manganese, Cadmium, Lead, and zinc were determined in seawater, marine prawn's hepatopancreas and muscle tissue. The trials were collected from three diverse locations along the coastline of Tamil Nadu (Chennai); Kasimedu, Lighthouse, and Muttukadu. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer was performed for heavy metal analysis. The mean cluster of heavy metals in water at all trail places follows in descending order of Mg > Zn > Cd > Cu >Pb> Cr during the period July-September 2019. The spreading range of heavy metals in the prawn samples was as follows:  hepatopancreas > muscle. The present analysis recorded that there were variances in heavy metal levels between diverse places. This indicates the ability of crustaceans to accumulate heavy metals to detectable levels. Metal bioaccumulation by shrimps can be affected by the chemical composition of the seawater.  Variations in heavy metal clusters among diverse places are probable to have ensued from hydrodynamics, metal bioaccessibility of the environment, change in tissue composition, stations of collection and sources of pollution within the Bay of Bengal, Chennai coast

    ANTICANCER AND IMMUNE-BOOSTING ACTIVITIES OF Moringa SPECIES

    Cancer is the leading cause of death globally. Imitative drugs are prescribed to patients caused severe adverse effects that caused weakness and losing power of patients. Although many drugs used against several types of cancer, more specific agents with lower side effects are necessary. Natural medicinal plants are used as antitumor and chemo-preventive agents in numerous experimental models of carcinogenesis. Moringa tree have shown to be effective against several ailments including cancer which was attributed to its bioactive constituents. These phytochemical compounds proved that they have potential anticancer agents. However, proliferation and the induction of apoptosis are regulated by several mechanisms. The current review will discuss the mechanism by which Moringa could fight different types of cancer and its role as an immune-boosting agent

    EVALUATION OF THE PYTOCHEMICAL AND ELEMENTAL COMPOSITION OF Hura crepitan SEEDS

    The present study was designed to determine the phytochemical and elemental composition of Hura crepitan seed grown in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeia. Standard methods of analysis were used. The result revealed that the concentrations of the phytochemicals were as follows: alkaloids (6.32± 0.41 mg/100g). saponins (9.07± 0.03 mg/100g), flavonoids (3.79± 0.03 mg/100g), tannins (23.11± 0.24mg/100) and cyanogenic glycoside (1.9 ± 0.01mg/100g). The results of the elemental composition revealed the following: Iron (0.10± 0.00mg/100g), potassium (12.45 ±0.00mg/100g), magnesium (5.73 ± 0.03 mg/100g), zinc (4.20 ± 0.00 mg/100g ) , calcium (9.07 ± 0.74 mg/100g), sodium (2.12 ± 0.04mg/100g) and phosphorus (3.29 ± 0.06mg/100g). The study showed that the plant contain very high amount of tannins. This may be responsible for its medicinal properties. The result of the elemental composition indicates that Hura crepitan seed could serve as a source of nutrients for human consumption
