IDEATION IN AGRICULTURE
Globally every higher educational institution and mega corporate entities are in the process of Open Innovation, searching for new ideas everywhere. There are many contests and challenges being organized by institutions to motivate younger brains to think far and wide to get great ideas with potential impact that will have a chance to be made into a reality. Adding to the constraint, is the lull in employment opportunities in industry, students are channeled into entrepreneurial paths so that they can take onus of bringing their education, learning, creativity and project management skills, to make their dream of product or service become implementable as a economic livelihood activity. Bringing new ideas to make agriculture prosper requires an outsider perspective. The United Nations in its Agenda 2030 for people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership has specified in its Sustainable Development Goal 2 that to End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Taking this a vital goal, the following work aims to derive an Out-of-box elaboration, with a multi-disciplinary approach applied so as to evolve with many ideas that can profiteer the process, produce, product and service that is associated with agriculture. When the need is to make an idea become materialized, a prolonged iterative process of brainstorming with experts in the relevant field has been undergone to evolve a template for the selection criteria that can sieve the ideas and be a ready reckoner implementable in the field of agriculture. This paper attempts to go through the process of ideation in agriculture, instilling new mushrooming ideas, even as the references are still evolving with emerging technologies, and tranquil in formation. Precision agriculture is beyond modernisations that are happening in agriculture today. Telematics, Nano culture, chromosomal researches, etc., are some to be mentioned. In all means every bio system has place for plants, animals and microbial species to live and cherish its being, the scope of this paper paves wave to include and involve integrated farming in future
DETERMINANTS OF SOCIAL WELL-BEING OF ADOLESCENTS WITH DELINQUENT BEHAVIOURS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE IBADAN METROPOLIS
The anti-social behaviour of juvenile delinquents has been a major issue in Nigeria for decades. Many people perceive delinquent adolescents as a social problem since they tend to influence their peers. While some scholars have documented the impact of juvenile delinquency on Nigerian society, this study examines the determinants of social-well-being of adolescents with delinquent behaviours. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 270 secondary school students in the Ibadan metropolis to participate in the study, which employed a descriptive survey research design. It adopted a standardised questionnaire titled School Type, Location, Juvenile delinquent behaviour and Social Wellbeing Questionnaire (EFJDBASWQ). The reliability coefficients of the scales are school type 0.72, school location 0.84 and social well-being 0.77. The three (3) null hypotheses formulated were tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the magnitude of the impact of environmental factors on the well-being of delinquents in the study area. Findings show a significant relationship between school type and the social well-being of delinquent adolescents (r = .144, n=270, p(.018)<.05). Also, there was a significant relationship between school location and the well-being of delinquent adolescents (r = -.268, n=270, p(.000)<.05). Lastly, there was a common and relative effect of environmental factors (school type and school location) on the social well-being of delinquent adolescents: school type (β = .143, p<.05) and school location (β = -.239, p<.05). The study recommends that schools should provide adequate youth-friendly services to enhance juveniles’ coping capacity. Parents whose youths are delinquent should engage them in activities that address their behaviour
PRE-FOUNDATION COMPETENCY AND CORROSSIVITY STUDY: A CASE STUDY OF CANAL VIEW ESTATE, ISOLO, LAGOS
Constant separation traversing and Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) techniques have been used in Canal View Estate, Isolo, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria to determine subsurface competency and corrosivity evaluation for structural development and other civil engineering applications such as underground pipeline for sewage and petroleum product transportation in the area. Twelve vertical electrical soundings (VES) and five 2D Wenner data were acquired from five different traverses established in the study area. Models obtained from 1D inversion of each traverse were used for construction of geo-electric sections which exhibit the main geo-electric characteristics of the geological units present in the area. Data obtained for each of the traverses in the 2D Wenner array were used to present Inverse Model Resistivity Sections. The interpreted results showed that the geoelectric sections consist of four to five geoelectric layers namely: the topsoil, clayey sand, clay, sandy clay and sand. The investigation revealed the fourth and fifth layers, interpreted as Sand, to be most competent and essentially non corrosive unit for shallow foundation for small to medium engineering structures and buried pipelines. These layers have thickness values that range between 9.8m to 44.0m and resistivity values of about 234.8Ωm to 6844.5Ωm
THE IMPACT OF PHYSICAL WELLNESS CHALLENGES FOR UNIVERSITY ATHLETES IN SRI LANKA
Wellness can be identified as a very important element to the entire human race. There is no health without well-being and no well-being without health. Wellness must be maintained in order to live a life of good physical and mental health. At present, there is less tendency for the whole community to participate in activities that are necessary to maintain physical wellness, such as physical activity and exercise. The purpose of this study was to find out how the challenges to physical wellness confirmed by the previous study affect the athletes of the University of Kelaniya. These challenges determine which challenge was most influential and which was less influential. This study was conducted by presenting a questionnaire to investigate what challenges more or less affect the physical wellness of university athletes. The SPSS factor analysis method was used to analyze the data and it was found that the challenge of ‘leisure’ had the most effect on the physical wellness of athletes, while the challenge of ‘nutrition’ had less effect on athletes’ physical wellness. Therefore, athletes are advised to pay more attention to their physical wellness and to properly identify the challenges that affect their wellness
PARTICIPATORY EVALUATION AND DEMONSTRATION OF FINGER MILLET (Eleusine coracana) TECHNOLOGIES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS IN SOUTH GONDAR ZONE OF NORTH WESTERN ETHIOPIA
Participatory demonstration and evaluation of finger millet technologies was conducted at South Gondar Zone of North Western Ethiopia. Besides, recently released variety was used under this demonstration to evaluate its performance with old varieties. It was particularly conducted with in two districts which have differences to some extent in terms of agro ecological and farming system. Four varieties were demonstrated and evaluated at twelve locations and/or sites and evaluated relying on varietal characteristics, farmers’ preferences and feedbacks. Farmers’ variety or local variety which is a variety available at farmers’ hand and cultivated for long time was used as standard check for comparison. Six demonstrations were conducted at the site of Farmers Training Center (FTC) and others were at farmers’ own fields. Quadrant system of yield estimation was employed to estimate average and relative yields of each variety. Regarding yield estimation, in general tesema variety performed highest comparing with others including the local variety. There were no statistically significant mean yield differences among demonstrated varieties between two districts in which demonstrations taken place. However, the average yield of tesema variety was statistically significant from the national average yield recorded by Ethiopian Central Statistical Agency (CSA). All demonstrated and improved varieties had relative yield advantages over local variety. There were also relative yield advantages between improved varieties themselves. Grain color, size, cooking quality, animal feed (palatability), biomass, marketability and disease resistance were identified as the main determinants of variety selection for farmers and different key stakeholders. Relying on this work and preference of varieties, further large scale demonstration need to be conducted to each of the site where demonstrations were undertaken. Variety releasing and development by respective breeders shall to take those variety selection criteria and farmers’ preferences in to account so as scale up and out reach the technology
VERTICAL VARIATION OF ABSOLUTE HUMIDITY OVER SELECTED STATIONS ACROSS NIGERIA USING SATELLITE DATA
An exponential model was developed for estimating absolute humidity. Meteorological data (temperature and relative humidity) were extracted for eight stations grouped into four selected regions across Nigeria. Monthly and Seasonal distribution of absolute humidity was calculated and analyzed for each station across the regions. The variations of absolute humidity were observed and the results showed that absolute humidity experiences seasonal trends across each station. The values of absolute humidity were high during the rainy months of April to October and low during the dry months of November to March. Values of absolute humidity were partially high during the rainy months of April to October in Coastal and Guinea Savannah regions with the observed dip in August. The absolute humidity for Midland region is relatively low throughout the year that shows the difference in the climate of the two regions. The variations obtained at Sahelian region is similar to that of Midland with single peak in June –August and July/August. The seasonal trend of variation in the Sahelian region was characterized with variations showing the maxima and the minima. The values of absolute humidity at all atmospheric pressure levels were conspicuously high during the rainy months than the dry months. It was also observed that there is exponential decreases across the stations. Validation and testing of the developed model for absolute humidity yield encouraged results on all the stations
HYPERGRAPH COLORING BASED ALGORITHM FOR CHANNEL ALLOCATION
The channel allocation plays an important role in the network performance. The unavailability of channels at certain instant poses challenges for spectrum allocation process in Cognitive Radio Networks. The opportunistic use of the spectrum by the secondary user in an efficient manner proves of good use for effective utilisation of the spectrum which further improves the communication in Cognitive Radio Networks. We have evaluated the performance of hypergraph coloring algorithm in accordance to various parameters taken into consideration like Average Sum Rate (ASR) to see the variation with respect to the number of channels and the number of users. We propose Hypergraph Coloring Algorithm which has better performance than the graph-based channel allocation algorithm. The existing algorithm approach is giving better result in terms of utilization of spectrum in an efficient manner involving Hypergraph coloring algorithm for channel allocation
FACTORS INFLUENCING THE DETERMINATION OF CUSTOMER SATISFACTION IN E-BANKING
Banking methods introduced for the advancement of the banking sector in Sri Lanka can reduce costs for customers as well as banking elites. Although the banking system has introduced electronic methods through technology, it can still be seen that they are not used by the customers because customer satisfaction through the banking services is not achieved. Therefore, the banking sector should provide a service that is conducive to customer satisfaction. This article aims to study the factors that influence what consumers expect from e-banking, the concept of e-banking, and the factors that affect customer satisfaction, as well as previous research dissertations and other articles on the factors that contribute to satisfaction. This study found that safety, tactility, reliability, accessibility, privacy, and financial literacy are the main factors influencing e-banking. GC-MS ANALYSIS OF METHANOLIC STEM BARK EXTRACT OF Indigofera zollingeriana
The present study was carried out to examine the bioactive chemicals in methanolic stem bark extract of Indigofera zollingeriana using Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrum (GC-MS). The result revealed the presence of 19 compounds with peak percentage in chromatogram. The major phytoconstituent in the exatract are: Indigoferabietone (21.67 %), Indigo, 2, 2-bisindole (14.35 %) and Indigoidin (12.49 %) with retention time of 17.38 min, 20.57 min and 10.33 min respectively. It was concluded that the presence of various bioactive chemicals or phytochemicals in Indigofera zollingeriana stem bark justifies that it can be used for the treatment of many diseases in animals and could be used as an alternative to antibiotics to promote food safety
REVIEW OF MAJOR CEREAL CROPS PRODUCTION LOSSES, QUALITY DETERIORATION OF GRAINS BY WEEDS AND ITS PREVENTION IN ETHIOPIA
Grain production plays a vital role in feeding an ever-increasing world population. Among grain crops that are serving as a food source, rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, and barley rank the most important ones. However, the production status of important cereals is highly reduced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Amongst these, weeds are key production constraints that reduce yield and deteriorate the quality of crops product. This paper was aimed to review studies that were conducted on the effect of weeds in crops production both on quantitative as well as qualitative losses. Weeds affect crops by competing for light, moisture, nutrients, and space, and produce seeds by suppressing crop plants faster. Crop yield losses are estimated at 10 to 90% depending on the crop type and area. On a crops basis, total losses are estimated about as high as 26–29%, 31%, 90%, 60%, 64% for wheat, maize, rice, sorghum, and barley, respectively if good weed control is not carried out. The negative impact of weeds on the quality of grains ultimately reduces the market value, nutritional status, and viability of the crop’s seeds. Therefore, it is crucial to managing weeds infestation through the application of integrated weed management strategies that can be cultural practices, use of herbicides, manual and mechanical weeding including a quarantine control system
