    OCCURRENCE AND MORPHOMETRICS OF Schistosoma bovis IN CATTLE IN ENUGU STATE SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA

    Schistosomes are digenetic trematode that causes the debilitating disease schistosomiasis, which poses serious public health and veterinary concerns worldwide especially in the tropics and subtropics. Environmental changes due to natural or human activities can have impact on the epidemiology and distribution of human and animal schistosomiasis and may lead to interspecies hybridization events. This study ascertained the occurrence and morphometric characteristics of Schistosoma bovis in Enugu State. Microscopy of faecal and warm water incubation of intestinal mesenteric veins of cattle from different abattoirs was used to demonstrate eggs and extract adults of Schistosoma species. Morphotypes of adult and egg morphometry of Schistosoma bovis species were recorded. An over all Schistosoma bovis prevalence of 50.64% was recorded. Proportion of infection varied according to slaughterhouse. Gariki slaughterhouse had highest infection of 31(77.5%), followed by 23(57.5%) in New artisan, 18(45%) in Ogbete slaughterhouse, and 9(22.5%) in Mammy market slaughterhouse. For adult worms, the male mean body length was 4.6 ±1.3mm, while the female mean body length was 7.8±0.07mm, the female length was significantly (p < 0.05) longer than the male while there was no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the male and female body width. There was significant difference between the male and female oral sucker width. Schistosoma bovis eggs seen were spindle shaped possessing a terminal spine. The morphometric characteristics of eggs did not vary according to location (p < 0.05). Prevalence of Schistosoma specie in the cattle could be as a result extensive grazing and drinking from rivers used by human which suggests possibilities of hybridization and zoonotic schistosomes

    Educators are under increasing pressure to incorporate new kinds of pedagogy while also changing their teaching methods. In the literature, there is a strong debate about whether CPD should be handled by the organisation or by the individual. When thought is applied to CPD, it can appear complex, resulting in educators not partaking in CPD. Teachers report that CPD can be organised in a variety of ways, but determining the best suited model is difficult. Kennedy (2005) suggests nine categories for categorising CPD. These categories describe possible knowledge acquisition locations and discuss how they could be adopted and investigated. The following review will critique Kennedy's models of CPD and its appropriateness for TEL

    ENHANCEMENT IN MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF SLOW-COOLED QUADRUPLE PEROVSKITE CaCu3Ti4O12 BY MICROWAVE-ASSISTED HEATING, AND RAPID THERMAL COOLING PROCESS

    The results of microwave-assisted heating and quenching process-induced modifications in elastic properties and lattice energy of slow-cooled microcrystalline CaCu3Ti4O12.quadruple perovskite are presented. The X-ray density and mean atomic weight-based semi-empirical method was used to calculate longitudinal wave velocity that was further used to compute Debye temperature, several elastic constants, shear wave, and average sound velocities. The magnitude of elastic constants for microwave-assisted and quenched samples was found to enhance compared to the slow-cooled sample. The lattice energy values for microcrystalline ceramics were found to be smaller when compared with the lattice energy values for monocrystalline counterparts computed from three distinct approaches. It was found that the thermal history-induced modifications in structural and microstructural parameters govern the mechanical strength of the material

    AUDIT QUALITY AND VALUE OF SELECTED MANUFACTURING FIRMS: NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE

    This article uses an ex-post facto and cross-sectional research approach to investigate the effect of audit quality on the value of selected manufacturing companies listed on the Nigeria Exchange Group's floor for a ten-year period spanning 2011 to 2021. Using audit quality proxies such as auditor independence, audit firm size, audit group qualification, audit experience, and Tobin's Q, the study analyzes the value of listed companies in Nigeria. We used panel multiple regression to examine the non-homogeneity of firm data, which is why we used Hausman effect tests on secondary data taken from the annual reports and accounts of 34 manufacturing firms. These tests included descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and a variance inflation factor. The Hausman specification test results indicated that the random panel Least Square (RPLS) regression solution was most acceptable for the dataset. There is statistically significant beneficial impact on the value of Nigerian manufacturing enterprises, according to the panel regression results that showed auditor independence had a favorable impact on firm value. Contrarily, audit experience has a non-significant negative correlation with Tobin's Q, whereas audit firm size and qualifications of audit group have a negligible positive correlation with the value of Nigerian manufacturers. Firms should work to improve auditor independence since it has a large and beneficial impact on audit conclusions. This study's findings imply that auditor independence has a considerable impact on stock market prices, consequently enhancing its monetary worth

    ALTERATION OF PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS IN REPEAT BREEDER COWS

    Repeat breeding is a significant reproductive problem to develop in a cattle industry in developing country. In this study, we demonstrated physiological alterations in terms of hematological, biochemical and hormonal profile being developed in repeat breeder cows. However, the biochemical profiles of 30 repeat breeders and 30 fertile cyclic cows were investigated and compared in this study. Hematological parameters (Hb, ESR, PCV etc) were measured in both cohort of animals. Serum was tested for biochemical (glucose, total protein, cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein) and hormonal (follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, thyroxine) assays using a commercially available ELISA kit after a routine blood examination. Paired T-test was used to check the significance of differences (P< .05) in blood profiles and hormonal profiles between repeat breeder and normal cycle cows. Repeat breeder cows had considerably lower total erythrocyte count, haemoglobin, platelets, blood glucose, luteinizing hormone, progesterone, and higher testosterone levels than typical cyclic cows. Overall, haemoglobin deficiency and low blood glucose concentrations possibly alters ovarian function along with lower concentrations of LH surge for ovulation. Correcting plasma glucose, Hb, LH, and testosterone levels may be an effective strategy for treating repeat breeding cows, based on the findings

    LABORATORY COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO COMMERCIAL FUNGI COMPOUNDS AND TWO ISOLATES OF ENTOMOPATHOGENIC FUNGI, ON PUPAE OF THE COTTON LEAFWORM Spodoptera littoralis (BOISD.) (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE)

    The pupae of the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis (Boise.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a pest affecting many economic crops were treated with two commercial fungi compounds and two isolates of entomopathogenic fungi, by applying the pupal dipping technique. Results showed that all of the tested entomopathogenic fungi adversely affected the adult emergence, Suspensions (1x108 spores /ml)    of conidia harvested from M. anisopliae isolate resulted in the highest mortality (62%) followed by B. bassiana isolate (60%) than M. anisopliae commercial (51%) and the lowest mortality (49%) with B. bassiana commercial, the treatment also led to reducing the egg-laying capacity and egg hatchability. Treatment with these entomopathogenic fungi also caused several malformations in pupae and adults resulting from the treatment of pupae. Conclusion of our results that the two tested entomopathogenic fungi isolate M. anisopliae and B. bassiana was efficient and can be recommended as bio-insecticides to control the cotton leafworm S. littoralis, within the integrated pest management (IPM) program

    AGROFORESTRY PRACTICES FOR SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION IN BANGLADESH: A REVIEW

    Agroforestry system, an integration of crops or pasture land and woody perennial trees, is a new approach for sustaining productivity of crops which also maximizes profits from a small piece of land. In BangladeshAgroforestry practices presume an imperative role in sustaining production and livelihoods improvement through concurrent production of food, fodder, firewood, and societal adaptation. Therefore, it is a new area of interest for researchers, farmers, and policy-makers. This review paper scrutinizes the contribution of common agroforestry practices in Bangladesh, including (i) sustaining production, (ii) ecological balance, (iii) soil carbon sequestration, (iv) standard agroforestry practices in a different area of Bangladesh for better system productivity and livelihood security. For example, a multistoried agroforestry system enhances the system's productivity. It improves nutrient status in soil due to boosting up biological activity through tree and crops interaction, N-fixation, litterfall, and fertilizer application to crops. Hence, different agroforestry systems in Bangladesh contribute to various social, economic, and ecosystem services. However, the synthesis of the available literature on agroforestry practices in Bangladesh helps to discover the proper management of trees and crops for better productivity and future direction and research plans

Although microfinance programs have been enforced with the aim of uplifting the living norms of the poor, their negative impact has increased nearly. But while the positive impact of microfinance can be seen in numerous studies, there seems to be little studies on the negative impact of microfinance on the poor, similar as debt trap.     EFFECT OF DIFFERENT DRYING METHODS ON THE DRYING KINETICS AND PROXIMATE COMPOSITION OF GARDEN EGG

    Garden egg (Solanum aethiopicum L.) is a perishable crop as a result of high moisture content which necessitates its conversion to a shelf-stable product using appropriate preservation techniques such as drying. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of drying methods on the drying kinetics of dried garden egg slices. The garden eggs were washed, sorted, and cut transversely into slices (3.0, 6.0 and 9.0 mm) and dried using the sun, solar and cabinet (60 ºC) drying. Drying kinetic, effective moisture diffusivity and the activation energy were determined. Proximate composition (moisture content, crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat and ash) was determined for both dried and fresh samples. Drying took place entirely in the falling rate period. Effective moisture diffusivity (Deff) increased with an increase in slice thickness. Effective moisture diffusivity varied from 3.641 10-10 to 1.062 10-9 for sun drying, 2.46710-10 to 1.08310-9 for solar drying and 2.48710-10 to 1.21310-9 for cabinet drying. The activation energy for cabinet drying was 14.93, 17.01 and 19.55 kJmol-1 for slice thicknesses of 3.0, 6.0 and 9.0 mm, respectively. The moisture content ranged from 4.02 to 8.02% for all analyzed samples, crude protein (17.5 - 20.13%), crude fibre (12.01 - 20.02%), crude fat (2.00 - 2.03%) and ash content (4.01 - 6.03%). The moisture content and ash content of sun-dried samples were higher compared to solar and cabinet-dried samples. The crude protein content, crude fiber content and crude fat content of solar-dried samples were higher compared to sun and cabinet dried samples. In conclusion, this study has shown that garden eggs subjected to solar drying and cabinet drying (at 60℃) gave a better result in terms of moisture content, crude protein, crude fibre, crude fat and ash content. Samples with lower slice thickness and higher temperature dry faster. Deff increases with an increase in slice thicknesses
