    Get PDF
Many countries are experiencing slow economic growth and reduced activity at the stock market. Stock markets always provide the vital role of acting as a leading indicator for economic growth. Even though there is no consensus on whether the two variables are positively or negatively correlated from previous studies, there is unanimity to the fact that stock market returns greatly affect economic growth of a country like Kenya. This review offers an intensive and extensive literature review of how stock market returns will correlate to economic growth in this period and factors that might influence the resultant behavior. The review also investigates whether factors Kenyan Stock returns are going to be aligned to the GDP influenced by factors such as foreign investments, disposable income, dominant stocks and investor sentiments. This review established that the growth in Kenya's GDP, like that of many countries, will follow stock market returns in slowing down in response to the pandemic. This is attributed to reduced propensity to invest caused by reduced disposable income job losses and negative investor sentiments. The study advices stakeholders to pay keen attention to the Kenyan stock market returns in order to project economic growth if the market is devoid of interferences. The government is urged to cushion businesses and employers from the harsh economic tides in order to avail disposable income to as many people as possible who will in turn invest in stocks

The current study focused on accounting for sub-soil assets: Its implications, benefits, and challenges in Nigeria from the theory of comparative advantage point of view. The study employed a survey research design. Two hypotheses were formulated for the study and the one sample t-test was employed in validating the hypotheses. The study found that there is significant adoption and utilization of measurements of sub-soil assets in Shiroro Dam. The study also found that there is significant use of Analytical techniques to improve accountants’ performance in accounting for sub-soil assets. Other qualitative findings emanating from the study included the absence of green and clean sub-soil exploration activities in Nigeria which is a strong factor responsible for the agitations in the Niger-Delta regions of Nigeria. The study also discovered a strong link between accounting for subsoil assets and long-term development. Consequently, the study recommends amongst others that (IAS41-Agriculture) be adopted and maintained as a principle for measuring all costs related to biological assets to ensure proper valuation of sub-soil assets and proper disclosure of green sub-soil exploration thereby mitigating the adverse effect of oil and other sub-soil explorations in Nigeria

THE MODERATING ROLE OF LAW ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLITICS AND FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENTS INFLOW TO GHANA

    Get PDF
This empirical study saliently investigates if law significantly moderates the impact of politics on foreign direct investment inflow to Ghana using 2003 – 2019 secondary data from different international institutions (World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Transparency International, and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development). Institutional foreign direct investment fitness theory underpins the study. Politics is the independent variable; law is the moderating variable; and foreign direct investment is the dependent variable. Using hierarchical regression analysis, this quantitative parametric study establishes thus: (i) political system has 67% significant positive effect on foreign direct investment inflow to Ghana within the period 2003 to 2019; (ii) legal system has 25% nonsignificant positive effect on foreign direct investment inflow to Ghana within the period 2003 to 2019; and  (iii) legal system significantly but negatively moderated the relationship between political system and foreign direct investment inflow to Ghana within the period covered in the study. The study established the relevance of institutional FDI fitness theory as political and legal institutions have positive relationship with foreign direct investment inflow to Ghana within the studied period. There is need to replicate this study in other emerging and emerged economies for good generalization of the findings. Finally, the need to strengthen the legal and political institutions of Ghana cannot be overemphasised. This is because it would result to improved foreign direct investment inflow to the country

Staphylococcus aureus is an infectious, opportunistic organism that causes clinical or subclinical mastitis in dairy goats. The genetic situations and antimicrobial resistance of isolates from dairy goats that are affected in clinical mastitis have not been studied in SAQ Teaching Veterinary Hospital (SAQTVH). The objective of this study was to characterize S. aureus from dairy goats that suffered clinical mastitis, by PCR, and by assessment of antimicrobial susceptibility. A total of 15 S. aureus isolates from intramammary infections were studied. Conventional PCR was used to detect nuc genes. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by the using disc diffusion method was carried out. In total 25 (78.12%) samples out of 32 were found Staphylococcus positive according to their cultural properties on Mannitol salt agar and Blood agar, a morphological appearance by Gram’s staining, and 15 (46.87%) samples were found positive by Catalase test. Out of 15 (46.87%) Staphylococcus positive isolates, 3 (20%) samples were Coagulase positive. Among the Coagulase-positive Staphylococcus species, one was confirmed as S. aureus by nuc gene PCR. The remaining isolated Staphylococcus were not confirmed at the species level that was considered unclassified Staphylococcus species. Methicillin resistance was not found, but resistance to penicillin/ ampicillin (81.25%) and (75%) was very common. We found a high degree of relatedness among bovine S. aureus isolates in SAQTVH and the strains that are often resistant to commonly used antimicrobials. This highlights the need for effective preventive measures that aim at limiting the transmission of bacteria rather than using antimicrobials to control S. aureus mastitis

The role of plants in medicine cannot be over-emphasized; nearly all known conventional drugs have their composition to originate from plants. This medicinal properties possessed by plants can be attributed to some chemicals which are called phytochemicals produced in some parts of the plants. The ease in access to plants which is all around us, made individuals and households to become Doctors of their own. In that the hear-say knowledge of plants has led to people choosing plants for treatment of sicknesses over conventional drugs. Locally, there are various ways individuals prepare their herbal medicine, and they include; boiling, drying under the sun and air drying etc. This study was aimed to know the extent to which some of these methods of herbal medicine preparation (sun drying and air drying) affect the phytochemical composition of some plant parts. The leaves of Tridax procumbens were used for this study, and it was evaluated for total saponin, total flavonoids and other secondary metabolites using standard procedures. The study of two different samples from the aforementioned two different methods of herbal medicine preparation reveals the presence of saponin, tannin, alkaloid, flavonoid, steroid. The air dried sample gave higher composition of saponin (1.85±0.03), flavonoids (1.34±0.03), tannin (2.51±0.02), alkaloids (1.49±0.02) and steroid (0.26±0.02), there is significant difference between the phytochemicals seen in the two samples. Thus, this reveals that the air drying method will have little effect on the phytochemical constituent of the leaves, and can be preferred over sun drying in preparation of herbal medicine

    Get PDF
Background: The collection of extra fluid in the pericardial sac surrounding the heart is referred to as a pericardial effusion. The pericardial sac contains between 15 and 50 milliliters (mL) of serous fluid in a healthy person. Infectious organisms or malignant cells may be present in this fluid, which can be transudative, exudative, or sanguineous. Infection, inflammation, or direct blood filling of the pericardial sac from a defect in the myocardium (iatrogenic or traumatic injury or heart wall rupture) or backfilling from an ascending aortic dissection that dissects into the pericardium are all possibilities. This activity looks at when this condition should be on a differential diagnosis list and how to properly evaluate for it, as well as the role of the interprofessional team in caring for patients with this illness. Conclusion: The goals of this review article are to describe the symptoms of a pericardial effusion, outline the testing that should be done in patients who present with pericardial effusions, explain pericardial effusion management considerations, and summarise interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to improve outcomes for patients with pericardial effusions
