Education plays a crucial role in developing cognitive skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving, which are essential for student learning and future competitiveness. However, many students in Indonesia face difficulties in understanding mathematics, particularly on topics such as ratios, due to the limited use of interactive learning media. This study aims to develop an interactive learning media using Visual Basic Application (VBA) for PowerPoint and to evaluate its validity and practicality. The development followed the ADDIE model, which includes five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Validation was conducted to assess both media and content quality, while practicality was measured through responses from students and teachers. Data were collected using validation sheets, questionnaires, and scoring rubrics, and analyzed quantitatively to determine validity and practicality categories. The results showed that the learning media obtained an average score of 3.09 for media validity and 3.47 for content validity, both categorized as “very valid.” Student responses reached a score of 740 out of 800, while teacher responses achieved a perfect score of 40 out of 40, indicating that the media is highly practical. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that VBA-based PowerPoint learning media is valid, practical, and effective in enhancing cognitive engagement and supporting mathematics learning, particularly on the topic of ratios
Application of Discovery Learning Model to Improve Students’ Conceptual Understanding on Algebraic Function Derivatives
Understanding the derivative of algebraic functions remains challenging for many students, particularly in linking fundamental concepts such as limits, rates of change, and the geometric interpretation of tangent slopes. These persistent difficulties indicate that conventional instruction has not sufficiently supported students in constructing deep conceptual knowledge. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Discovery Learning model on improving students’ conceptual understanding of algebraic function derivatives. A quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Control Group Design was employed, involving two Grade XII classes at SMA Negeri 1 Batangtoru. The experimental class received instruction using Discovery Learning, while the control class received direct instruction. Data were obtained through conceptual understanding tests, student activity observations, and teacher observations. The implementation of Discovery Learning followed stages of stimulation, problem identification, data collection, verification, and generalization, enabling students to explore derivative concepts through graphical, numerical, and symbolic representations. The results show that the experimental class achieved a higher mean posttest score (82.6) than the control class (73.3). A t-test yielded a significance value of 0.001, indicating a significant difference between the two groups. These findings demonstrate that Discovery Learning enhances students’ conceptual understanding by promoting active exploration, reasoning, and pattern recognition. In conclusion, Discovery Learning is effective for teaching derivatives of algebraic functions and offers strong potential to support concept-based mathematics instruction at the secondary school level
Analisis kemampuan pemecahan masalah aljabar linier ditinjau dari self efficacy
Linear Algebra is often considered a difficult subject by students due to the complexity of its content and their limited problem-solving abilities. In addition to cognitive aspects, this ability is also influenced by affective factors, one of which is self efficacy. This study aims to investigate the problem-solving abilities of students in Linear Algebra, based on their self-efficacy levels. The research was conducted in the odd semester of the 2023/2024 academic year and involved participants from the 2022 cohort of the Mathematics Education Study Program who were enrolled in the Linear Algebra course. Data were collected through a self efficacy questionnaire, problem-solving tests, and interviews, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman qualitative model. The findings indicate that students with high self efficacy demonstrated stronger abilities, especially in implementing solution plans and reviewing their answers. Meanwhile, students with moderate self efficacy tended to make calculation errors and were less likely to verify their results. These results suggest that self efficacy plays a significant role in comprehensive mathematical problem solving
