    No full text
Machine learning begins with machine teaching: in the following paper, we present the data that we have prepared to kick-start the training of reliable OCR models for 17th century prints written in French. The construction of a representative corpus is a major challenge: we need to gather documents from different decades and of different genres to cover as many sizes, weights and styles as possible. Historical prints containing glyphs and typefaces that have now disappeared, transcription is a complex act, for which we present guidelines.

Formal Concepts and Residuation on Multilattices

    No full text
Multilattices are generalisations of lattices introduced by Mihail Benado. Hereplaced the existence of unique lower (resp. upper) bound by the existence ofmaximal lower (resp. minimal upper) bound(s). A multilattice will be calledpure if it is not a lattice. Multilattices could be endowed with a residuation, and therefore used as set of truth-values to evaluate elements in fuzzysetting. In this paper we exhibit the smallest pure multilattice and show thatit is a sub-multilattice of any pure multilattice. We also prove that anybounded residuated multilattice that is not a residuated lattice has at leastseven elements. We apply the ordinal sum construction to get more examples ofresiduated multilattices that are not residuated lattices. We then use theseresiduated multilattices to evaluate objects and attributes in formal conceptanalysis setting, and describe the structure of the set of corresponding formalconcepts. More precisely, if Ai:=(Ai,i,i,i,i,i)\mathcal{A}_i:=(A_i,\le_i,\top_i,\odot_i,\to_i,\bot_i), i=1,2i=1,2 are two complete residuatedmultilattices, GG and MM two nonempty sets and (φ,ψ)(\varphi, \psi) a Galoisconnection between A1GA_1^G and A2MA_2^M that is compatible with the residuation, then we show that C:={(h,f)A1G×A2M;φ(h)=f and ψ(f)=h}\mathcal{C}: =\{(h,f)\in A_1^G\times A_2^M; \varphi(h)=f \text{ and }\psi(f)=h \} can be endowed with a complete residuated multilatticestructure. This is a generalization of a result by Ruiz-Calvi{\~n}o and Medinasaying that if the (reduct of the) algebras Ai\mathcal{A}_i, i=1,2i=1,2 arecomplete multilattices, then C\mathcal{C} is a complete multilattice.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure

As a result of technological advances, digital archives now have a significant role to play in the conservation of history. Video games have also become a part of this preservation. Video game archives are created all over the world for scientific, historical, cultural, and technical interests. The goal of this article is to build a reflection on the functions of video games and the possibility of considering them as archives. Four archive functions and four video games (Hell Let Loose, Company of Heroes 2, Kholat and Assassin’s Creed: Origins) containing cultural and historical elements from Russia will allow to clarify the functions of video games, as well as the similarities with archives and to bring a new look on the cultural and educational value of video games.

In considering how to propose a new reading of the writing of Sorana Gurian (1913-1956), a French- and Romanian-language Jewish writer, I will refer to some of her forty-one unpublished texts, including thirty-seven poems and four prose texts, preserved in manuscript or typescript form. These documents have never been discussed or even mentioned in the research on this writer until December 2020. The analysis of this material in the context of Gurian’s writing as a whole allows, in my opinion, to enrich the interpretation of her main texts: her literary drafts, for which I will use the term “pre-text”, give direct access to her creative process, as they contain elements that she will later include in her published texts. Thus, I will present her literary work in a retrograde manner, i.e. through manuscripts and typescripts, so that I can show the importance of some of these unpublished texts, despite their secondary or unofficial character due to their draft status.

On the VKontakte and Odnoklasniki networks, communities entitled “Born in the USSR” give Internet users the opportunity to immerse themselves in their lost homeland through the publication of photographic archives from everyday life in Soviet Union. The archives are allusions that can arouse memories of the lived past and engage users into a collective reconstruction of the past. It is a playful activity of recollection: the visitor finds objects and is invited to recognize them by the recurrent addressed question “who remembers that?”. Thanks to the accumulation of archives, the communities also offer a synthesis of Soviet culture. Thus, the archives act as triggers for memory and as representative samples of the disappeared world. This article aims to take an anthropological look at the notion of archive, focusing on how individuals use them to stimulate their memories and to belong to the community.

Soumission à EpisciencesMobile ad-hoc social networks (MASNs) have been the subject of several research studies over the past two decades. They allow stations located in a small geographical area to be connected without the need for a network infrastructure and offer them the possibility to communicate any time anywhere. To communicate, stations regularly broadcast their interests in the form of keywords. Stations with a high degree of similarity among their keywords can communicate with each other. However, the coverage of MASNs is limited to a small geographical area, due to the limited communication range of mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) stations. In this paper, we present an architecture and implementation of hybrid mobile ad-hoc social networks (MASNs coupled to infrastructure networks) of Android mobile devices for information dissemination. Stations can use the infrastructure network to communicate and rely on the mobile ad-hoc network when the infrastructure is not available.Rather than communicating synchronously as this is the case in the similar works found in the literature, in our approach, the stations communicate using a publish/subscribe communication protocol, which is perfectly suited to this type of network thanks to the decoupling in time and space it provides.

A new discrete theory of pseudoconvexity

    No full text
Recently geometric hypergraphs that can be defined by intersections ofpseudohalfplanes with a finite point set were defined in a purely combinatorialway. This led to extensions of earlier results about points and halfplanes topseudohalfplanes, including polychromatic colorings and discrete Helly-typetheorems about pseudohalfplanes. Here we continue this line of research and introduce the notion of convexsets of such pseudohalfplane hypergraphs. In this context we prove severalresults corresponding to classical results about convexity, namely Helly'sTheorem, Carath\'eodory's Theorem, Kirchberger's Theorem, Separation Theorem,Radon's Theorem and the Cup-Cap Theorem. These results imply the respectiveresults about pseudoconvex sets in the plane defined using pseudohalfplanes. It turns out that most of our results can be also proved using orientedmatroids and topological affine planes (TAPs) but our approach is differentfrom both of them. Compared to oriented matroids, our theory is based on alinear ordering of the vertex set which makes our definitions and proofs quitedifferent and perhaps more elementary. Compared to TAPs, which are continuousobjects, our proofs are purely combinatorial and again quite different inflavor. Altogether, we believe that our new approach can further ourunderstanding of these fundamental convexity results

    Stateful Realizers for Nonstandard Analysis

    No full text
In this paper we propose a new approach to realizability interpretations fornonstandard arithmetic. We deal with nonstandard analysis in the context of(semi)intuitionistic realizability, focusing on the Lightstone-Robinsonconstruction of a model for nonstandard analysis through an ultrapower. Inparticular, we consider an extension of the λ\lambda-calculus with a memorycell, that contains an integer (the state), in order to indicate in which sliceof the ultrapower MN\cal{M}^{\mathbb{N}} the computation is being done. We payattention to the nonstandard principles (and their computational content)obtainable in this setting. In particular, we give non-trivial realizers toIdealization and a non-standard version of the LLPO principle. We then discusshow to quotient this product to mimic the Lightstone-Robinson construction

Ways of Knowing Agency and Development: notes on the philosophy of science and the conduct and use of inquiry

    No full text
Development is a value-laden concept and, as such, an essentially contested issue. To different extents, different ideas of development entail different assumptions about human agency. Although economics has been the most influential discipline, increasingly different accounts highlight distinct features of human beings and the contexts they inhabit, which lead to different implications. This article seeks to delineate the boundaries of the discussion and map out what are arguably the main alternatives within the field. Since such discussion deals with the question of what human action is, the argument is elaborated from the philosophy of science. Contra convention, the discussion uses a philosophical ontology, which is concerned with out connection to the world. Jackson’s heuristic is adopted to generate four philosophies of science and four notions of agency, regarded as ideal typical. Neopositivism advances a rational agent, reflexivity suggests a patient, critical realism furthers an interagent, and analyticism proposes a transagent. This article invites scholars and practitioners interested in this increasingly interdisciplinary area to raise their awareness regarding the foundations on which their ideas about human agency build and note the implications they have for the production and consumption of knowledge
