    Get PDF
Background: Renal fornix rupture with fluid extravasation is a rare complication in cases of ureteral obstruction, which is usually caused by obstructive ureterolithiasis. The symptoms of renal fornix rupture are not very specific and can easily go unnoticed due to their underlying cause. Case representation: The present article reports a case of a patient of a 70-year-old, male, who was diagnosed with a ruptured renal fornix due to acute ureteral obstruction, following clinical assessment and a non-contrast CT scan. The proposed course of action was the endoscopic placement of a double J ureteral catheter. Conclusion: In the case described, the conservative treatment that was chosen by passing a double J catheter through the left ureter, for the patient proved to be an alternative to surgical treatment in the acute event, reducing the risk of possible complications from the operation. It was possible to conclude that although renal fornix rupture is a rare emergency with multiple etiologies, conservative treatment with urinary diversion using a double J ureteral stent was effective in solving the patient\u27s acute condition

Elucidation of Richard Bernstein’s Engaged Fallibilistic Pluralism as an Epistemic Framework for the Historiographical Reconstruction of the Sciences

    Get PDF
This paper aims to elucidate the theoretical framework corresponding to Richard Bernstein’s pragmatic turn through a diachronic reconstruction of his early and mature work. It employs a structured-qualitative reading, focusing on ‘engaged fallibilistic pluralism’ as the central category of his thought. The relevance of this work lies in providing an epistemic scheme that can be applied in the historiographical reconstruction of deliberative praxis carried out by plural communities of research, particularly in the controversies inherent in the history of anthropology, considering the categories of ‘juxtaposition’ and ‘critical constellation’ of researchers

The CoP Theory in Reading Enhancement Programme(REP) from Pragmatic Lens of Language Development

    Get PDF
The Community of Practice (CoP) theory is principally anchored on active involvement of members of the community with one common shared purpose. They foster camaraderie and preform a common practice. In applied linguistics, CoP is a less explored area of language learning. By highlighting the benefits of CoP, school administrators will be able to solicit active involvement from stakeholders. A phenomenological approach was adopted to investigate the independent and dependent variables under qualitative research design. One hundred five L2 learners and 2 teacher participants served as a bridge to offer philosophical findings to the framed RQs. Features such as consultation conferences, orientation to the internal and external stakeholders and commitment to the school-based intervention are the essential features of CoP and REP. Presence of parents, donation of instructional materials, reading follow-up at home, financial support of LGU & NGO as well as close monitoring of school administrator paved the way for the increase in the academic performances. Researcher concludes that CoP theory has been found efficient in implementing REP incorporating principles of pragmatism to language development

Teachers’ Perception on Implementing the Revised Lower Secondary Curriculum in Selected Schools in Uganda: A Focus on Emerging Issues and Coping Strategies

    Get PDF
This study explored teachers’ perception on the implementation of Comptency-based Curriculum (CBC) in lower secondary schools in Uganda that was rolled out in 2020. The shift from the Knowledge-Based Curriculum (KBC) to CBC caused a cultural shock to those who had been nurtured in a purely teacher-centred curriculum! Teachers got challenged over their authority and autonomy in the delivery of instruction. Discussion was centred on teachers’ readiness to implement; pedagogical competences to plan, facilitate and assess CBC. In this phenomenological study, data was collected from 12 randomly selected secondary schools in urban, semi-urban and rural areas of Uganda. The population comprised teachers of Lower Secondary, Directors of Studies and Headteachers. Data was analyzed qualitatively through codes and themes and reported thematically, backed with verbatim quotations and statements from participants. Majority of the teachers were struggling with gaps in planning and content delivery, CBC stimulated hands-on-learning, teachers’ preparedness was considerably low due to lack of prior training, ICT integration was still an uphill task, majority of teachers were still stuck to traditional methodologies. CBC is too demanding and ambitious! NCDC should, therefore, design retooling packages for continuous capacity building, schools should promote peer mentorship, collaboration and Network initiatives

    Get PDF
Aim: To evaluate the effects of administration of bouillon cubes on insulin resistance, lipid profile and renal function parameters in female albino rats. Methodology: A total of thirty-five (35) female albino rats, weighing between 120 and 150 grams, were used for the study. The bouillon cubes, Star Maggi and Knorr were administered daily to the rats, using an oral gavage tube for 90days. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was determined using the Glucose oxidase method. Fasting plasma insulin (FPI) and Cystatin C levels were quantitatively determined by a rat-specific sandwich-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Insulin resistance was determined using the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) method. The electrolytes, sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) and were determined using ion selective electrode method. Urea was determined using Urease-bertholet method. Creatinine was determined using the Jaffe-Slot method. Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG) and High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) were determined by enzymatic methods. Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) was calculated from the Friedewald’s equation. Kidney sections were stained using haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining technique. Quantitative analysis of monosodium glutamate (MSG) content of the bouillon cubes was analyzed using ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy while the sodium content was analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry according to the method of the American Public Health Association. Results: There were no significant differences (P>.05) in FPG, FPI and HOMA-IR in all the treatment groups. The mean cystatin C value in group E (High Dose Knorr) was significantly higher (P <.05) than the negative control and all other treatment groups. The results also show the mean sodium values in groups D (High Dose Maggi) and E (High Dose Knorr) were significantly lower (P <.05) when compared to the negative control. There were no significant differences (P >.05) in TC and HDL-C levels in the negative control, compared to the treatment groups. There were no significant differences (P >.05) in TG levels, except for group B (Low Dose Maggi) which significantly lower (P <.05) than the negative control. Also, there were no significant differences (P >.05) in LDL-C levels, except for group B (Low Dose Maggi) which significantly higher (P <.05) than the negative control. Histologic analysis of the kidneys of the treated groups showed histological changes in the architecture of the tissues indicating tissue distortion, acute tissue damage, glomerular nephritis and distorted capillaries and degeneration compared to the negative control group which showed no tissue distortion. Conclusion: Chronic exposure to bouillon cubes did not impact fasting plasma glucose, insulin and insulin resistance in the treated rats. Chronic administration of Knorr cubes impacted the integrity of the kidney as levels of cystatin C and sodium were altered in the albino rats. Histoarchitecture of the kidneys of the treated rats showed histological changes indicating tissue distortion, acute tissue damage, glomerular nephritis and distorted capillaries. Lipid profile/metabolism was relatively not affected by the administration of bouillon cubes

Effect of Exposure to Air Freshener on Some Hepatic Enzymes and Haematological Parameters of Albino Rats

    Get PDF
Air fresheners, which are available as incense sticks, scented candles, aerosols, liquids, gels, and electric diffusers, are used to mask odors with refreshing scents. They are widely used in homes, cars, and offices, marketed to create a clean and pleasant indoor atmosphere. However, many air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can have harmful effects on human health. This study evaluated the effects of exposure to a gel air freshener on hepatic enzymes and hematological parameters in albino rats. Thirty (30) albino rats, weighing 200-260g, were divided into three groups of ten rats each, and acclimatized for two weeks under 12-hour light/dark cycles with free access to food and water. Group I (Control) was not exposed to the air freshener, Group II was exposed to the air freshener for 4 hours daily for 28 days, and Group III for 8 hours daily for 28 days. After the treatment, the rats fasted overnight, were anesthetized with chloroform, and blood samples were collected via cardiac puncture. AST and ALT were assayed using enzymatic methods, and hematological parameters were measured with the Sysmex XP-300 Automated Haematology Analyzer (5-part). Results showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in AST, ALT, hematocrit, hemoglobin, red blood cells, and platelet levels in Group III compared to Groups I and II. No significant difference was found between Groups I and II. This suggests that 8-hour daily exposure to air freshener for 28 days induces hepatocellular damage and alters hematological parameters in albino rats, with the extent of damage increasing with longer exposure. However, further studies on humans are recommended

Exploring Gender Disparities In Executive Leadership Positions In Norway: A Qualitative Analysis

    Get PDF
Norway has gained global reputation for its gender equality efforts, yet a considerable gender disparity persists at the highest organizational ranks. This qualitative study explores the underlying reasons for the underrepresentation of women in executive leadership positions in Norway. Grounded in social role theory and the glass ceiling concept, the research involved a comprehensive literature review of academic journals, government reports, and industry publications. Thematic analysis revealed societal and cultural norms, organizational factors, and individual-level elements as key contributors to this inequality. Traditional gender roles, implicit biases, lack of mentorship and networks, gender culture, structural bias, as well as personal factors like confidence, self-esteem, and risk aversion emerged as significant barriers. The study critically evaluates existing measures aimed at bridging the gender gap, which have had limited long-term impact. Based on the findings, an integrated set of recommendations is proposed for policymakers, organizations, and individuals to increase women\u27s representation in top executive roles. These include challenging traditions, fostering organizational inclusivity, providing individual support, strengthening accountability, and promoting collaborative efforts

The Mechanics of ESL/EFL Writing Performance at the Tertiary Level

    Get PDF
After exploring different theories of teaching and learning ESL/EFL writing, along with successful models of writing courses and instructional methods, this study investigates the internal complexity of ESL/EFL writing at the tertiary level, as well as the contributing factors in students’ writing performance. The characteristics of different types of language learners are identified in conjunction with the plasticity and lateralization of the bilingual brain and the critical period hypothesis. The study also delves into certain biases and heuristics while it analyzes Kahneman’s System 1 and 2 of thinking and various personality theories in order to determine students’ innate abilities to excel in ESL/EFL writing tasks. Furthermore, the paper elucidates the importance of psychological equivalence in the writing process with the help of Pym’s translation theories, and explains students’ interconnectedness through Berne’s transactional analysis and the ego states of each personality. By integrating neuropsychological perspectives with established pedagogical approaches, such as the scaffolding, product, process, genre and grammar-translation techniques, the article offers a holistic framework for educators and policymakers to enhance ESL/EFL writing instruction, and ultimately proposes future research directions for a better understanding of ESL/EFL students’ needs
