    Get PDF
Evolving an appropriate theoretical model which has the capability of exploiting the wealth in African indigenous culture-centric knowledge systems towards knowledge production is the great challenge that prompted this research. The aim of this study therefore is to re-examine the definition of culture in order to provide the interpretative criteria for understanding the foundational role African cultures play in the determination of the nature, scope and sources of Knowledge Africans appreciate and pursue, which are exploitable for effective knowledge production. This research identifies the indigenous values which yield pertinent knowledge that has historically kept Africa stable prior to the advent of slave trade, colonization and even in the face of today’s globalist agendas hence, the author projects the same for universal beneficence. However, this paper observes that the habitual reliance on Western interpretations of African realities is a gap created by Africans themselves by their over dependence on foreign epistemological structures with its strictures. The study in conclusion, suggests that Africa re-interprets her reality through a re-reading of her history, ideologies and the subsequent application of her knowledge systems through the lenses of her cultural uniqueness. The study adopts the content analysis and hermeneutical methods of enquiry

Comprehension is the basic condition for meaningful reading. The current quantitative study conducted in the English language context explored the effect of teaching reading strategies on the reading comprehension of junior high school students with a sample size of 30 in an inclusive classroom setting. The findings revealed that majority of the students were at the ages 14 to 17 years old, females, parents’ income ranging from ₱9,520 - ₱19,040 with an educational background at the high school level. The Effective Instructional Methods were more highly utilized than the cooperative learning strategies. Both reading comprehension levels during the pre-test and post-test belonged to the proficient level. There is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (t = 7.417; p>0.05) of the reading comprehension performance of the respondents. On the other hand, there is no significant relationship (r = 0.158; p>0.05) between the post-intervention and the extent of varying teaching strategies. Findings indicate that teaching reading strategies have a positive impact on the reading comprehension of students at the junior high secondary level. The study has important implications for teachers, students, curriculum planners, policymakers in the field of education, and school heads

Epidural and Intrathecal Drug Delivery Systems for Chronic Pain Management: Progress, Promises, and Challenges: a narrative review

    No full text
Millions of people worldwide suffer from chronic pain, which significantly impacts their quality of life. Managing chronic pain is often complex and time-consuming. In this narrative review, we explore the use of epidural and intrathecal drug delivery systems (EIDDS) as a solution for chronic pain management. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of recent approaches in targeted implantable drug delivery systems for chronic pain management, including their long-term safety, efficacy, cost-effectiveness, risks, and future opportunities and challenges. The data was gathered through extensive research using MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases, including studies published until June 13, 2023. The visual analogue scale, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), respiration, and oxygen saturation in the group receiving drugs through a targeted implantable drug delivery system were significantly better than those in the group receiving conventionally administered analgesia in a study on patients with advanced cancer. Whereas in comparison to conventional treatment alone, the targeted implantable drug delivery system alone or in combination therapy exhibited some advantages or similar effects in reducing chronic pain during a 1-year follow-up in patients with chronic non-cancer pain. Implantable drug delivery systems are a promising new treatment option for chronic pain treatment. All forms of pain, including those that are still challenging to treat with traditional methods, can now be targeted with devices and treatments

Objects as Expression of Power, Religion and Therapy: The “Country” Pots in the Bamenda Grassfields Fondoms of Cameroon

    Get PDF
In most parts of the world especially in Africa, people can be identified and distinguished through objects. These objects which some are worn on the body or carried along are decorated with symbols which could be decoded by those who comprehend their cultural connotations. The object this article focuses on is the indigenous or ‘country’ pots of the Bamenda Grassfields, pots which were used in the past by women in the kitchen, by traditional medical doctors and by traditional leaders; notables and heads of secret societies. Today, these country pots are not very visible in the kitchen as it was the case before because of the introduction of other containers. The questions raised by this paper are: What is the place of the country pot in the lives of the Bamenda Grassfields people? What is the symbolism of the motifs represented on the Bamenda Grassfields country pots? What are the change currently taking place in the production and use of these pots? The objectives of the article are to examine the roles and find out the meanings of the motifs represented on pots. It also explores the changes which are taking place in the production, commercialisation and use of the country pots. Data for this article was collected using the qualitative method and this data was analysed using content analysis and interpreted soon after collection was over. The interpretation was done with the theories of cultural ecology of Steward, functionalism of Radcliff-Brown and Malinowski, symbolic anthropology of Geertz and cultural evolution of Tylor and Morgan. Findings reveal that the country pots are an aspect of material culture of the Bamenda Grassfields. They are of very great cultural value and play a fundamental role in these cultures; they are an expression of power, religion, healing as well as communion. The country pots like any other cultural element, if they are valorised, they will continue to identify the people from generation to generation

Cotton in the Indo-Pacific: Historical Origins, Linguistic Diffusion, and Socioeconomic Impacts

    Get PDF
This study investigates the historical origins, linguistic diffusion, and socioeconomic impacts of cotton (Gossypium spp.) in the Indo-Pacific region. By reviewing secondary data from historical texts, linguistic databases, and archaeological reports, the research explores how Gossypium species, domesticated in both the Old and New Worlds, spread through complex trade networks and cultural exchanges. The study analyzes the dissemination patterns of cotton-related terminology across various language families and examines the socioeconomic effects of cotton cultivation and trade, including its influence on labor systems, economic structures, and cultural practices. While the findings highlight cotton’s significant role in shaping global markets and cultural inter-actions, the study’s limitations – such as its reliance on secondary sources, a two-month research duration, and a focus on a specific geographical area – warrant cautious interpretation. These constraints may limit the comprehensiveness and depth of the analysis, suggesting the need for future research to incorporate primary data collection, a broader geographical scope, and an extended study period. Despite these limitations, the study contributes to a nuanced understanding of cotton’s historical, economic, and cultural significance, emphasizing the need for sustainable agricultural practices in contemporary cotton production

Lymphedema in a patient with decompensated cirrhosis

    Get PDF
The lymphatic system is critical in body fluid homeostasis. Although lymphatic vascular expansion prevents the development of ascites and oedema in the early stages of liver cirrhosis, compensatory mechanisms cannot achieve this in the advanced stages due to lymphatic dysfunction. A 36-year-old male patient, who had been followed up for cryptogenic cirrhosis for 15 years, had been complaining of excessive swelling in his legs for the last 4 years. Excessive swelling in the legs was accompanied by skin rashes and ulcers, and the leg skin had an orange peel appearance characteristic of lymphedema. Bilateral lower extremity artery and venous system colour Doppler ultrasonography showed that the vascular structures of the right lower extremity arterial and venous system were open, and the flow rate, direction and spectrum were normal. The patient, who could not undergo liver transplantation due to organ limitations, died due to sepsis following lymphedema-induced wound infection. In conclusion, this case suggests that lymphedema should be considered in the presence of oedema in cases of decompensated cirrhosis, and the necessary conservative treatments should be applied

The Influence of Exchange Rate Fluctuation on Foreign Direct In-vestment in Nigeria (1986-2022)

    Get PDF
Using yearly data series spanning 36 years, from 1986 to 2021, the research empirically evaluates the influence of exchange rate fluctuation on foreign direct investment in Nigeria. The study’s objectives were focus on examining the extent of exchange rate volatility in Nigeria and ways by which exchange rate volatility impact on foreign direct investment in Nigeria. Secondary source of data was employed from world development indicator (WDI) and central bank of Nigeria (CBN). Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) were employed and the GARCH (1, 1) model was used in investigating the model built and were analyzed using multicollinearity with the use of Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test to verify that the variables are stationary in order to make sure the estimated results are not erroneous. Findings from the study shows that real exchange rate volatility (REERVOL) has a long-term and short-term detrimental impact on FDI and negative long- and short-term interest rate coefficients demonstrate that an unfavorable interest rate exacerbates the already diminishing foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to Nigeria as a result of REERVOL. The policy was recommended for improving FDI through effective exchange rate management
