Towards a Configurable Platform for the Design and Evaluation of P4 Network Systems and Applications
Due to the difficulties of running experiments on production networks, researchers often use platforms such as network emulators and testbeds to test their applications before applying them to the real world. There exists a need for a networking platform of this sort designed specifically for running P4 code and for evaluating P4-based experiments. In this work, we design and develop such a platform for use within our lab group based on the Mininet network emulator and its corresponding graphical user interface, MiniEdit. We have successfully integrated the BMv2 software switch into MiniEdit to allow users to build topologies for running P4 code and have developed a fully functional, custom built match-action table interface that allows users to easily manage the tables and table entries of their P4 programs. Additionally, we have integrated our platform with an Aurora 610 programmable hardware switch, allowing users to easily construct topologies involving this switch, and present a simple interface to allow users to view the tables and table entries on this switch from the main platform
Voting with Culture: Assimilation and Civic Engagement Among Latinos in the U.S.
How does assimilation explain voting and voter registration rates among Latinos? Using data collected from the 2020 Collaborative Multi-Racial Post Election Survey (CMPS), this paper examines the role of assimilation of Latinos into mainstream U.S. society on political participation. I measure assimilation using factors such as racial identity, education, income, and language to analyze how these factors have led to increased or decreased political participation, such as voting and voter registration. This research finds that Latinos generally are more likely to participate in voting and voter registration as the level of education and income increases. This study also found that Latinos who tend to speak more Spanish at home also tend to participate more in political activity. While there are some gaps in the research that can be attributed to the limited amounts of Latinos with higher levels of education and income, this study is representative of the current spread of the demographic
Synthetic Dataset Generator to Assist in Training of Multilayer Perceptron based Neural Network
Synthetic dataset generation attempts to solve the issue of needing large datasets to train models and observe behaviors in both a cost and time effective way. This project aims to highlight the value of synthetic data creation and how it was useful when training a neural network model by creating a synthetic dataset generator for a specific model in order to evaluate its behavior in difference scenarios. The model that was used in this project was created to select high-quality papers while maximizing the diversity of authors based on race, gender, and country characteristics, essentially mimicking a review process. The goal of this synthetic dataset generator is to provide an efficient way to test the model on relevant data in order to train the model and evaluate its effectiveness.
Two experiments were conducted, the first verifying that the generator created a dataset with the correct user-provided proportions, and the second to test how well the model behaved when run on a synthetic dataset. The first experiment did indeed verify that the generator created datasets with the correct percentages provided by the user and the second experiment revealed that the synthetic data simulated real data well based on the performance results from the model
Automation Programming for UHV-CVD growth of Group IV Materials
The automation programming of a UHV-CVD reactor for group IV materials was performed. The reactor was programmed to perform all the necessary functions for a Germanium (Ge) growth with little response from the user. The overall goal was to fix an Argon purge program to clean out the process chamber of gases and create an Excel output program to ease any work on the user. There were also general fixes and address name changes that occurred throughout the program. Then, a one step and two step growth of a Ge material was formed in a UHV-CVD reaction for analysis. Germanium is a type of semiconductor that has the potential for more efficiency than silicon. This is largely due to the intrinsic structure of Germanium having a direct bandgap compared to Silicon which has an indirect one [2]. This allows Germanium to produce more energy than Silicon [3]. In order to find if a growth was accomplished, ellipsometry was used to analyze any thickness on the wafer. If there is any thickness measurements, a layer of Germanium was deposited. After having the automation run, a thickness was measured across multiple one and two step growths showing a successful Ge growth. Only one two step wafer growth did not have a measured thickness, but it still had the same shine on the surface. Thus, it also had correctly grown. Since the automation program successfully grew multiple Germanium wafers, the automation program for the UHV-CVD reactor worked
The Associations of Mental Health with Academic and Exercise Procrastination
This study examines the relationship between exercise procrastination and academic procrastination with symptoms of depression and anxiety among college students. Procrastination is commonly studied in academic settings, but limited research has looked at how various types of procrastination can impact mental health. In this study we specifically look at exercise and academic procrastination. A total of 109 undergraduate students participated by completing surveys measuring their levels of academic and exercise procrastination, as well as their symptoms of depression and anxiety. The results showed that higher levels of both academic and exercise procrastination were significantly associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety symptoms. Additionally, the significant interaction between academic procrastination and exercise procrastination indicated that students who reported high levels of both experienced the highest levels of depression and anxiety symptoms. This suggests that the combined effect of procrastination in multiple areas of life may intensify mental health challenges

“Mimicking Straights”: the Legacy of Conservatism in Homophile Activism, 1950-60s
In this thesis I explore historical misconceptions about the homophile movement that was active during the sixties and 1950s. Scholarly narratives have borrowed Gay Liberation’s perspective that narrowly defined homophiles as conservative, respectable, and tied to gendered roles. This representation only reflects the ideas of leadership, rather than the membership. Homophiles were a highly diverse group of people, both intellectually and demographically. Assumptions about their politics and practices began in straight society but did come to be repeated by their critics. In truth, homophiles included radicals and conservatives and their publications served as the stage on which to debate the fine details of their methods. Marriage was a common example of homophiles’ tendency to import oppressive gender roles into their relationships, but this is founded on a pervasive heteronormative myth, rather than reflecting practice. Instead, homophiles were more likely to become involved in long term relationships than their peers, but those relationships were informal, private, and did not feature a ceremony or other traditional performances. The later years of homophile activism, 1960 to 1969, was characterized by a shift in the publicity of militant politics, but not the emergence of those politics. Frank Kameny’s Washington Mattachine Society was one of the first homophile organizations to push for a radical approach at the leadership level, but much of their politics matched the homophile platform to that point. This is counter to the argument presented by the oversimplified historical narrative, which held that East Coast militancy presented a break in tradition for the movement. Instead, it existed as an iteration of the homophile practice of extensive internal debate. The incremental decline of homophile relevance in the late 1960s and immediately following the Stonewall Riots of 1969 signaled the beginning of a different era of politics. To establish their new movement, early writers like Wittman used the political memory of the homophiles to define their bounds. That is where this account ends, as the relationship between homophile politics and Gay Liberation’s politics is a subject too extensive to be fully covered here. I suggest that future research can resolve some of these enduring questions and further explore the rich intellectual culture of the homophiles
Characterizing Heating and Resistance Properties of Nichrome Burn Wire to be Used in CubeSat Actuation
This thesis investigates the use of Nichrome 60 wire as a burn wire mechanism, commonly utilized in CubeSats and other aerospace engineering applications requiring precise, single-use release systems. The experiment focused on characterizing the thermal and resistive behavior of Nichrome 60 wire under Joule heating conditions. Four wire configurations were tested: 34-gauge and 36-gauge wires, each at lengths of 1 inch and 2 inches. Each configuration was subjected to a constant current until thermal failure occurred. During testing, real-time measurements of electrical resistance and wire temperature were recorded. This data was used to generate resistance vs. temperature profiles for each wire configuration. The resulting plots provide insight into the material behavior of Nichrome 60 wire leading up to failure and offer valuable information for predicting performance in burn wire applications. Additionally, the obtained experimental results were compared to prior research in the field to evaluate consistency and validate observed trends. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the thermal and resistive characteristics of Nichrome 60 and its suitability for controlled release systems, particularly in the context of CubeSat deployment mechanisms
Building Layered Defenses to Reduce Illegal Gun Violence
The government and stakeholders in society must act within their span of control to eradicate excessive and illegal gun violence. It is not surprising that a majority of Americans “say gun violence is a very big problem in the country[,] . . . they expect the level of gun violence to increase[, and] . . . it is too easy to legally obtain a gun” in the United States. This Article tackles this politically charged issue and recommends specific strategies for the government and stakeholders in society to reduce unlawful firearm violence and its harmful effects. At the heart of the controversy surrounding gun control, as explored in Part II, lies the difficult balance of respecting individuals’ right to bear arms under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution and fulfilling the government’s duty to protect the public. Part III examines the existing legislation taken to remedy this situation such as extreme risk laws and laws requiring background checks for firearm purchases, as well as, their effectiveness. Recognizing the shortcomings of government efforts to reduce illegal gun violence and the limited ability of any single stakeholder to solve this significant problem alone, Part IV advocates for each stakeholder in society—from the government and media to those who sell, buy, own, possess, or manufacture firearms—to work on the necessary components within their span of control to build layered defenses that will be effective against those who desire to illegally kill themselves or others using firearms. Finally, Part V concludes that the government should enhance public safety by encouraging all stakeholders in society to act within their span of control to do their part to reduce illegal gun violence
